Dead at 92. Legend of football, 4x World Cup winner (twice as a player, once as manager, once as assistant manager). Hell of a career and life!

Thought he was already dead.

The last of Brazil's awesome 1958 squad? Featuring the GOAT, and another player a little too familiar with goats.

Oh man, that's truly sad news. That's a man any football can't and won't ever forget.

May he rest in peace.

Glad someone posted this. There’s also a great extract from a book on his life on the guardian today. A real tactical innovator as a player and a coach. A great of the game. We spend so much time looking forward but sometimes it’s nice to look back at some of the joy provided to us over the years by the greats of the game. Was really interesting how he made a functional world cup winning team out of five players who traditionally played at #10. Especially as it’s not something you could do today where it’s all about data and running. Harks back to an era where football was inherently more interesting and artistic.

He also coached that great Brazil team of 1998 with Carlos, Cafu, Rivaldo, and Ronaldo, and probably would’ve won it again were it not for the debacle surrounding Ronaldo and his seizure before the final.

He literally invented the 4x5x1 / 4x3x3. The system existed, but was never sucessful at the highest level teams. And he actually was the first person to place midfielders as center backs in order to make a more fluid build-up.

In 98 they did played well, but their center backs lacked speed and that costed them the final because they weren't able to press France too high (and also because Leonardo put a poor performance that day, by totally failing to pin Zidane on both corners). The game itself was more balanced than the 3-0 result made it look, Desailly made a fantastic game by covering defense and Barthez mistakes.
