Yeah, you can add Robben and Oscar to that list as well. And you make a very fair point. My line of thinking that he wants an imposing player on the flank is because of the perisic rumours which won't fade away. He's been the only winger we have been heavily linked with.
Perisic adds work rate width and balance as a wide player. Too much is read into physically imposing charecterstics.

Rooney started last season as Mourinho's intended partner to our main striker Zlatan but we were forced to readjust given he was awful. Unless Mourinho's opinion of the players he had initially rated behind Rooney has increased, you'd imagine he still wants someone to fill the position Rooney vacated via poor form last season rather than the one he's vacating via transfer now.
Exactly this. I always look to the start of last season as to how I think Mourinho wanted us to play. Adjustments were forced on us due to poor performance levels.

We need to replace the player that Mourinho thought he was inheriting last year. It could be a straight like for like which Griezmann would have been. A right winger to move Mata/Mkhi into #10. A defensive midfielder and a change in formation. Or even Pereira could take his place to an extent although I do see him more as a #10/#8 where Rooney was a #10/#9.

I prefer the like for like replacement. I just don't see that profile of player being readily available this window.

I think Jose will stick with one striker up top rather than try and play two. Even if he does use two surely Rashford is the one next to Lukaku. Martial will compete with Rashford for either the place next to Lukaku or on the left wing.

It should have been James.

Now? I can't think of anyone... Bale maybe?

We need a direct replacement, Rooney was directly involved in 18 goals last season whether he is shit or not. Ibra scored just under 30 goals last season and are only attacking signing is Lukaku. We need at least one other goalscorer or creator.

Expect his place in the squad (on bench, occasional starts) will be fulfilled by the worst performing of either Martial, Mkhitaryan or Rashford. My money's on Martial

Really dont see who we will sign in the attacking positions apart from Perisic. I find this worrying to be honest, we need more goals.

There was one readily available, but he's gone on loan to Bayern. Might sound a bit radical, but if we resign Zlatan, i think he can easily play as a #10 behind Lukaku or Rashford. Zlatan can receive, hold and carry the ball as well as anyone, what he would need most are runners, of which we have plenty. He easily has the skill-set, the vision, presence and the obvious goal threat to be the quick and easy answer to our #10 conundrum, and would solve much of our creativity and goalscoring issues. Plus his goal threat is hardly limited by playing a deeper role either.

So the replacement might already be waiting at Carrington when we get back. He would definitely be handy to keep around the place, his confidence, belief and general attitude on and off the pitch, would be of huge benefit to the likes of Lukaku, Rashford, Martial, Perreira Shaw etc. Probably, help Lindelof settle in too! Yes, i really, really want Zlatan to stay! :D

I'm not sure you can use that word in a discussion of Zlatan.

This. Apart from the first sentence! Hope the rumours of him staying to sign in Janurary are true. We've also now Pereira, who can probably play anywhere in midfield or attack apart from DM or up top.

We don't really need a direct replacement for Rooney in on-field terms. We could do with another England NT heavyweight though, being Manchester United and all.

Isn't Pereira a Rooney replacement ? Can play as either a central midfielder or as a 10, great range of passing, creative, set piece specialist and best of all doesn't cost us a penny so I'd like to see him given a chance.
