Whether you like Ross Noble or not would seem to have some bearing on an answer to that.

I'm going to that Stephen Merchant gig on Thursday so I'll do a review of that and Stewart Lee's new one next week. Or not. Dependent on whether I can be arsed..

I don't think a 'stand up review' thread would be a bad idea in here. Change the thread title. ;)

I went to see Tommy Tiernan - Poot a couple of weeks ago, I have to say he was quite possibly one of the funniest live comedians I have seen, non stop laughs throughout and a high paced enjoyable, yet slightly mental, performance. It may not be everyone's thing, but i'd recommend his latest DVD - Tommy Tiernan: Crooked Man.

From the list of the ones above I think Ross Noble (don't know why there are so many of his available mind, he's only got the one new DVD out this year), Jimmy Carr, John Bishop, Lee Evans and Micky Flanagan are the safe bets and maybe Peter Kay too for the rest of the family! Will be interesting to hear what Cassius has to say on Stephen Merchant, heard bad things about his stand up but i'm hoping for it to be good!

That was the missus choice that one. Haven't been expecting a lot from it myself either, hence avoiding any reviews for it since it started.

If i go into it expecting it to be shit then my expectations can only be exceeded. :nervous:

I went to see Rhod Gilbert in Leeds a couple of weeks ago in a little boozer (100 capacity) and he was trying new material out for when he does his UK tour in April/May next year.

Very, very funny (he thought some of it didnt work although I thought the whole 1 hour 45mins was quality)

Agreed, two of the best comedians about at the minute IMO. Went to see Tim Vine a few months back too, another one of the best stand up shows I've been to thanks to his quick wit & the constant rolling jokes - great fun and still amazes me his brother is Jeremy!

 I know the feeling, it's not that I dislike Stephen Merchant, I just think that his stand up tour feels slightly 'forced', mainly off the back of his success from his work with Ricky Gervais, a bit like Paddy McGuinness did with Peter Kay yet Paddy can pull comedy off... yet I can envisage Stephen Merchant's show feeling a little awkward at times! But not to put the show down, for all I know it could be one of the funniest stand up tours around; I'll await your feedback on it before I watch his recent DVD!

Stephen Merchant then. Much better than I expected.

He was very comfortable on stage and came across as much more likeable than his partner in crime and as such it was hard not to warm to him. There was nothing edgy in his performance (not that you'd expect it) but he was very funny and there were lots of humourous anecdotes and riffs on everything from watching porn on vhs to the etiqutte of splitting a restaurant bill on a night out.

He also did an encore that basically involved him pulling up 2 members from the audience and acting out a play he'd written during his school days, which was very funny but would've been better if the 2 members he's pulled from the audience had not so obviously been stooges. I guess he wasn't confident enough to risk a genuine member of the audience throwing a spanner in the works and in fact on this occasion it was probably wise as I was coming back from the pisser and the only person with her hands in the air was the missus to which he said "I dunno about you. You look a bit mental. Have you volunteered him (gesturing at me) whilst he's been out the room? "

Silly bint.

Don't get your hopes up too much.

Like I said it was better than I expected but not particularly memorable. Safe comedy.

Not sure how well it will translate to dvd either but it's certainly no worse than the likes of John Bishop if that's your thing.

Peter kays is good but it's a complete cash in because they've missed some of the funniest bits out from the actual tour which is just ridiculous.

Worth a download, possibly worth paying for a gift but don't spend the £14 it is on it for yourself.

i was expecting good things from his dvd and although it did have its moments overall i was disappointed, also the continuous shots of the crowd laughing like it was the funniest thing they´d ever heard everytime the camera happened to pass them by was annoying the arse off me.

i thought merchant was a bit bobbins.

dylan moran was very good.
See him live or on dvd? Can understand if you mean the latter.

Stand up comedy is an oddity in that I think you have to be supremely shit not to get any laughs live. Let's face it - people are paying money to laugh and that coupled with a few drinks is half the job done already.

A good show should have you talking about it long after but they're few and far between.

Looking forward to Stewart Lee tomorrow. Just hope the missus keeps her hands down. :nervous:

both on dvd with the two i mentioned, but yeah, live comedy is much better, you´re much less critical and open towards it i find, also you have to admire someone who can stand up and talk in front of hundreds if not thousands of people and you dont really appreciate how hard it must be when watching on a dvd.

Yeah I found that very wierd, some of it looked set up. Like that heckler at the beginning. The 02 is huge, but they happened to have a camera directly facing the heckler? Wierd.

I've nothing but animosity for 95% of those in the list. Piss poor, the vast majority of them. I might check out Jim Jeffries new one though.

I thought Stephen Merchant's "Hello Ladies" was appalling. It's a shame because I like the guy and I've enjoyed much of his work but stand-up is not his forte.
I think appalling is a bit harsh. I certainly expected it to be but it was merely mediocre as is 90% of what constitutes stand up comedy these days. Some of it (the school play re enactment and the reminiscings on the days of vhs pornography) would've have meant much to a younger audience but got a smile and a chuckle from me.

Anyway Stewart Lees new show - Carpet Remnant World is a tricky one to review. If you're familiar with any of his previous live sets then you might be expecting (as I was) a theme to be running through the core but as he acknowledges himself its more of a hodge podge of stuff as he's done very little, bar watch Scooby Doo with his son, in the past year.

There's plenty of his trademark dry observations on current affairs and his fellow comics. Classic quotes (both real and made up) from the American public around the time Bin Laden was killed and an amusing anecdote (can it be called that if its bullshit?) about being mistaken for Rlatko Mladic outside the theatre.

Funnily enough one of the highlights is a 20 minute montage of him reading out some of the horrendous personal abuse directed at him from all corners of the internet all set over some smooth jazz which worked almost too well.

All in all if you hate him, this won't change your opinion (he has a running gag with potential new fans that might be in the audience off the back of his tv show) but if you're a fan then this is still head and shoulders above nearly all that guff on the list at the top of the page.

Just don't go in expecting anything on a par with 90's comedian which I still hold up as the finest piece of stand up I've ever seen.

D'oh to all of us not in the UK, then :( I hope it'll shot at some point, though I'm unsure of how serious his threats in "If you prefer a milder comedian" were.

Merchant also disappointed me, I have to say... Didn't find myself nudged past a smile, at all.

Micky Flanagans is the best out of the 3 I've watched this year so far out of that, Alan Carr and Peter Kay.

I'm really looking forward to Carpet Remnent World and Richard Herring's new show that tours in April as well. I definitely didn't download all of his previous stand up sets recently and they certainly are not brilliant.

The Angelos Epithemiou DVD is a bit of a let down as it mainly consists of material already performed on Shooting Stars (RIP). Hopefully he'll have something new for his Channel 4 series.

Gonna grab the Greg Davies and Milton Jones ones soon.

What were you expecting?

Watched the Peter Kay "Tour that doesn't tour tour". I think if anyone else delivered that material they would be consigned to mediocrity but he's so likeable and his delivery is so wonderful he had me in stitches on a number of occasions. I think everyone would like to be Peter Kay's mate, I certainly would.

I can't stand the cnut. There is very little likeable about Peter Kay.
