Straylan and Kiwi politics

I'm totally alien to New Zealand culture and I'm sure there's a reason I'm missing here but this seems very weird to me that it's happening in a parliament building

The bill in question is designed to alter the treaty between the Brits and Maoris. It is a right wing push and Maoris hate it. The 3 MP's did the Haka as a protest and got kicked out for intimidating and unparliamentary behavior (or something like that). They have been suspended but so has the vote on the bill so they will still be able to vote.

I'm sure some of our NZ based posers like @Stack will have a far more nuanced understanding.

There has been a long sustained attack on Maori here over the last 18 months. Its being done under the guise of equality but the reality is you cannot have equality without equity and Maori have for a long time been ripped off and taken advantage of regarding lands and customary rights protected by the treaty of Waitangi.
Its a long and difficult history to understand in 1 short forum post.
With respect to this Haka there was a long concerted attack on various things relating to Maori. 26 different pieces of legislation that had been in place for years repealed under urgency without consultation by this current govt. We have these things called Maori wardens who operate within the umbrella of councils. they are Maori who try to help with the issues of Maori being at the wrong end of our criminal statistics. Again too long to explain in a short forum post but they have over the last couple of decades done valuable work. This current govt asked local councils to vote on whether they wanted to keep them or not. 43 councils voted to keep them 3 got rid of them. This govt didnt like this so have now told councils they have to hold referendums on them at the next council elections. They didnt get what they wanted so are now trying to force local govt to use another method. This was all taking place before the treaty principles bill was voted on. The treaty principles bill is one which wishes to "rewrite" the treaty of Waitangi. Those pushing it have some pretty shitty agendas and are driven by hard right libertarian forces. Fortunately the majority of Kiwis have seen through this and are sympathetic to Maori with this particular bill. Its been a very divisive bill and the Haka was I believe a frustrated response to all the shit thats been thrown at Maori in the last 18 months. To give you an idea of just how shitty its been the select committee who have given the Maori MPs a three week suspension had one committee member looking at the possibility of prison sentences. I shit you not.
The current Govt here are a complete bunch of c***s, the worst I have seen in my lifetime, economic morons.

Hopefully NZ politics goes the way of AU and theorist wing nutters get destroyed at the next election.

The Libs and Nationals are trying to resurrect the coalition but lots of dirty laundry is being aired and in-fighting, leaking and positioning makes the National's leader look like a dead man walking, after holding the position for about 5 minutes. Hilarious when Barnaby Joyce sounds like the voice of reason. Then again he is experienced with messy divorces.

I see. Thanks for explaining and now I get the context.
