Technically, it's possible that a stroke could leave someone in an acute confusional state yet not unconscious. Or they could be a drink-driver trying to avoid being caught.
Depressingly, none of us have any doubt about the most likely explanation. Which speaks volumes about what a terrible state of affairs we're living through. Crazy that it's come to this. No idea what the solution might be.
