We have better players than Spurs except at CB and Striker (although Lukaku isn’t far from Kane).

The problem is coaching and tactics. The few chances we create end in nothing, while we don’t create enough.

I wouldn’t complain about lack of chances created if the few we did create ended on goals... But our end product is lacking.
Really? im struggling to put United players in a combined team on how these players have performed. Kane comes in over Lukaku, this is a no brainer, Eriksen over Mata, Son over any of our other support players, who actually makes the cut from our attack other than Sanchez? Midfield you would take Pogba over the ageing Dembele and Matic over Dier, they are simply better than Spurs' midfield options. Defense? Im tempted to go with Vertonghen, Davies, Toby, Trippier as the defence. With De Gea in goal, so Matic, Pogba, Sanchez, De Gea and ?

Mourinho fanboys are amazing, when it was previously pointed out that Pochettino's team look well coached, we were told that they finished below us so how could they be better coached. But in this thread they suddenly have better team, better core and have been together long.

They are special, last season every praise for Poch and even Klopp was shut down with 'they've won nothing' or 'yet we finished above them'. All of a sudden this they've been better than us forever, all because we didn't sign fecking Maguire

All excuses are, by definition, sad. That's what excuses are. A cover-up or a smokescreen for actual underlying reasons.

The blame has to be shared around. Jose, the players and Woody. Woody, in my opinion, should shoulder the least blame for the current state of the team but the players and Jose need to be equally accountable.

For our defensive issues, Jose has had 5 windows so far with Smalling, Jones and Rojo. And he bought the other 2. This realisation that our defenders are bad should not have been a sudden one. He should've been able to move on at least 1 among Jones/Rojo in 5 transfer windows. He's definitely got some part to play in why our defense is shambolic. If he had no plan to strengthen that area before this summer, that's just plain short-sighted from Jose. Ed might have been more inclined to allow for a CB signing if we didn't have so many. Or if we hadn't signed Fred this year. Lot of ifs but definitely both parties responsible for the defensive problem.

And our lack of creativity and goals have to be down to the players and Jose. There has been plenty of investment in those areas but still there is no semblance of cohesion in the final third. Jose might be too cautious or the players could be too stupid, but can't see how Woody can be blamed here.

Overall the bulk of the issues come down to the players and Jose. They have been sub standard and need to improve. For example Bailly and Lindelof are not computer bots with mistakes programmed into them. They should be able to learn from errors and become more solid players. Bailly can learn to be less rash and staying on his feet more, Lindelof can work on his physicality. They are medium-big sized investments and can't be cast aside so early. Similarly Pogba can work on being less wasteful, Lukaku should be coached to make more runs into channels instead of playing all the time with his back to the defenders. These are things which a good coach should look to get done instead of looking for alternative solutions to every problem. I'm assuming here Jose is the negligent one not bothered about player improvements, but like I said maybe the players are thick in which case he is truly fecked without transfers.

People harping on about lack of new signings and jumping Ed's throat make me laugh, especially after today's game.

Tottenham who didn't sign anyone and finished below us last season are showing improvement and looking a far better team than they were last season yet here we are trying to excuse our incompetence on lack of signings.

We didn't lose any players and should be able to show improvement with the same players from last seasons. Tottenham have shown that this signing story is a myth and just a sad excuse brought up.
We don't need sensible or logical posts here. Didn't you get the memo? Its all about signing the next shinny toy every season. Who cares about building team spirit when you can just spend 400m every season and play terrible football, eh.

The fact that this loss was handed to us by Tottenham makes it all ironic.

We had the second best defensive record in the league last season with almost the same set of centre backs (minus Blind and, for the moment, Rojo). Even if we needed recruitment in the area, it doesn't justify the regression we've seen so far.

Tottenham have probably received far more criticism in the media for its lack of signings, but the message that came from the club was always that the manager is happy with the squad, supposedly because there isn't anyone that would improve on their existing options.

With us, the discontent with the centre backs was loud and clear. When we were first linked with Alderweireld, some on here were still questioning whether our priorities should lie elsewhere. By the time that we were linked with Mina, the message was that our transfer window would be an unmitigated disaster if we fail to sign a defender.

It doesn't take a psychologist to figure out that this was bad for the players' confidence. (Still, the players aren't completely off the hook: United players should be mentally strong; and they have to take the blame for being pretty average to begin with).

Why don’t you mention Progba , sanchaz,Martial, de gea.
You think spurs squad is better becasue they have a better manager who get the best from his player ,But Jose can’t .
After spending 300milliom and being kicked out by Sevilla and finished second on the league ,I don’t think it is massively over achievement
Lol. Spurs had a dramatically better squad than United 2 years ago when Mourinho took over, and they have a better squad than United now.

If I literally posted the Spurs and United squads from the summer Mourinho took over, you will see that one squad was SIGNIFICANTLY better than the other. More than 300million pounds different. Poch has done a very good job, but he hasn't had to replace an entire spine. His strongest 11 now compared to the day he took over is almost the same. It's far easier having to refresh 1 position per year than 4-5 per year. Especially when the core spine is just about to enter their peak at the same time.

Mourinho has had to replace centre backs, wing backs, central midfielders and attackers. You can't do that all in one go. City, Chelsea and Spurs have all built their squads intelligently for the past 4-5-6 years, something which United haven't done. It was a mess when Mourinho took over, failed managers scraps left over and players way past their best.

Finishing 2nd and winning multiple trophies is a sound job so far with the squad he inherited.

Lloris, Alderweirald, Vertongen, Trippier, Rose, Dier, Eriksen, Lamela, Kane, Ali, Son, Lucas Moura, Wanyama, etc - how many of those players were there when Poch arrived? Most. Plus others like Walker. Much easier to strengthen when you've got an immense core.
