Top 10 albums of all time

That's an interesting one. I've not listened to that particular album myself but everything i read about Sonata Arctica says the first two albums are great and after that it drops off in quality a little. I have listened to the first two Sonata Arctica albums and i do feel both are fcuking fantastic so perhaps i ought to give Reckoning Night a listen since you've included it in your list.

I like all of their albums, with the exception of Unia. That one was a little too heavy on the prog for my liking. I know some people don't like the later Sonata albums, as they moved away from the power metal style, but as I say, anything but Unia works for me. Reckoning Night has my favourite song of theirs too, White Pearl, Black Oceans.

Yes indeed. Besides their first two albums, I could've picked Brave New World, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son or even the last one was well. But because Dance of Death was the album through which I've discovered Maiden it has always been my favourite. It's the same for that Dream Theater album. Many people will go for Metropolis Part 2 or Images and Words, but Octavarium was their first album I listened to and I really love it.

I thought The Final Frontier was pretty boring. Starblind, The Alchemist and The Talisman were just about listenable but the rest i haven't revisited for years.

I'd say the greatest album from any Wu member is Liquid Swords, personally. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is so good as well mind you.

Fair enough, I think both are on the same level technically, I believe OB4CL had a much greater impact on hiphop. Either wouldn't look out of place in my list, but I had to choose one

I like the Melvins too, have only got Lysol and Houdini though.

You should try some of their more recent albums.

Melvins are one of the few bands I can think of whose output is as solid now as when they started. Great band.

Ha, if we did I can't remember that bit, so we're either fine or doomed to repeat this in six months' time. But yeah, I think the bootleg's like Nils Logren's authorised one, where I like it more than the big live album Waiting for Columbus. In their prime, with great sound for a studio session.

Fair enough, each to their own. It's funny, the way you described the albums is almost the exact opposite of how I view them. I see Generation Terrorists as a collection of individual (and catchy) songs, that don't quite fit together in an album. Whereas I see the Holy Bible as a perfect group of songs that sit together as a cohesive unit. To be honest, I didn't even like THB when I first heard it, but it slowly grew on me until I loved it. I don't think there is another album for me that had such a disparity between how I felt with the first few listens and how I eventually felt about it. That seems to be the case with the music industry to some extent (that it's a slow burner), with the initial reviews being less emphatic than the write-ups it received for the 10th anniversary edition.

You're bang on there. The Holy Bible is my favourite album ever. Twenty years ago now.

Such a unique blend of situations resulted in that album and sadly we'll never see another album quite like it again in popular music.

This is tough, but it would probably go something like this (in no order, and only one per artist, otherwise I'd probably only have Beatles/Stones/Floyd/Who):

Pink Floyd - The Wall: I'm a huge fan, and I know the purists likely won't agree, but this album resonates with me like few others.
The Who - Tommy: Another double album. Not as tight or focused as Who's Next, but the ideas are just spilling out from Townshend. Keith Moon is also on fire here.
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers: Obvious choice, but it really is an incredible album. A Day in The Life might be the best song ever.
David Bowie - Hunky Dory: Hard to pick one Bowie album, but this one is the best combination of style and substance (a balance Bowie has occasionally had trouble striking.)
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street: Another double album! The Stones peaked with this one, and never came close again.
Neil Young - After The Gold Rush: Part Crazy Horse; part folk. A truly brilliant album, highlighted by the title track.
The Cars - The Cars: For me, the best debut album ever.
Elvis Costello - Armed Forces: Some of the best lyrics; great hooks.
The Rheostatics - Whale Music: Criminally underrated Canadian band. Doubt any of you will have heard of them. Check this album out.
Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite For Destructions: To think what could have been....

God, now I'm thinking about it, a number of other albums spring to mind:

Scott Walker - Scott Walker: Incredibly, this album was a commercial disappointment. With masterpieces like Duchess, Angels of Ashes and Rhymes of Goodbye, it's hard to understand why.

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden: Timeless in the sense that it sounds like it could've been released last year. An 80's album that in no way sounds like an 80's album.

Talking Heads - Fear of Music: Brian Eno's influence can really be felt on this one, and that's never a bad thing.

Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets: I love just about everything I've heard by Eno, but this one just shades Another Green World as my favourite.

Roxy Music - Country Life: A Really Good Time, Prairie Rose, Out of The Blue. All classics.

Radiohead - Kid A: Many will opt for Ok Computer, but I think this one was more daring, and has such a comforting/disquieting feel to it.

Peter Gabriel - Passion: Awesome soundtrack; usually find myself mouth-breathing while listening to this one.

Tindersticks - Tindersticks (second album): I remember hearing Tiny Tears on The Sopranos and thinking I needed to hear more of these guys. Thankfully I did.

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions: It's just all so effortlessly genius. Stevie Wonder is the like the Paul Scholes of music.

Ween - Chocolate and Cheese: It's like listening to a really awesome mix tape put together by Dean and Gene Ween. Buenos Tardes Amigos, Freedom of '76 and Roses are Free are standouts.

Ten is personal man and far more than a musical project for him. He basically wrote his life and put it out in that album. Nothing else mattered. He still won't be able to sing Release without getting all choked up. A true emotional outburst.
