Which is better: always looking for the next big thing and only hiring managers for the long term, or is it best to hire managers for the short term?

It would be lazy to think of Real Madrid, because of who they are, but even in their case, where success may seem independent of coaches, it really isn't. Of their last 15 coaches, only 3 reached the CL semifinals (Mourinho, Ancelotti, and Zidane), and only the latter two actually won the CL, both doing it more than once. It's not a coincidence.

Chelsea's recent history tells us that with good enough players and a good enough coach, you can win big trophies repeatedly. They did it with whatever was left of Mourinho in 2015. It took him only two years to win that PL. Then he inevitably imploded in his famous third season. They got Conte, who won it also in his first season (record wins at the time) before falling out with players and bosses alike. Sarri won them the EL but didn't want to continue; Lampard got them top 4. Tuchel replaced Lampard and quite convincingly won the UCL in his first season before falling out with his new bosses 15 months later.

Would you rather hire a problematic manager with big (recent enough) credentials or a coach with a trustworthy long path to stability and possibly success at the end?
