West Ham and United both had two keepers on the bench tonight.

What’s that about?

Is it to keep the third choice keeper feeling involved? Even though they know there’s zero chance of getting on the pitch?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to choose a kid who plays the position where you’re lightest in numbers? He’s available if you’re incredibly unlucky with injuries. Plus gets a psychological boost from being selected.

I presume they can't really do that because of the "bubbles" that the U23 teams are in so it has to be from players who train with the first team

To be honest it's about time teams are allowed to put the rest of their squads on the bench like they do in Serie A.

Above all else it gives the cup and not much else players a bit more feeling of involvement.

Players often get a bonus for being in a match day squad. May well be managers showing a bit of loyalty to guys who come in and do their jobs every day without any realistic chance of playing a game.
