Vodafone Match Preview

The visit of Leicester City in a competition not best renowned for being a major goal for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United may seem like something of a sideshow.

But the game has a great deal of importance for the long-term future of both clubs. While Sir Alex will eye “three or four” young lads for the future, Micky Adams, the Leicester City boss, will be dreaming of the financial rewards from a much-needed cup-run.

The well-documented financial crisis at the Walkers Stadium has sent the club into administration, but flying high in Division One – second place in fact – the Foxes will provide a stern test for the Reds.

The United team should be marginally stronger than the one that faced Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League last week, although Ferguson will be hoping for a vastly improved performance – and result.

Leicester meanwhile, have an experienced crop of players, Izzet, Elliott, Walker, Taggart and Davidson all boast plenty of Premiership appearances and international honours.

Sir Alex will know what to expect - a hard-working outfit constructed by the promising young manager Micky Adams – any young players who do play cannot expect an easy ride, or too much time on the ball.

Despite the off-the-field difficulties, Leicester’s form on the field has been good with a promotion place in sight.

Buoyed by a 2-0 win against fellow promotion challengers Portsmouth, Leicester will be looking to continue their good run off form – the club have lost just once in fifteen games.

The Foxes should remain unchanged from the tried and trusted 4-4-2 side that beat Pompey. While Brian Deane and ex-Man City forward Paul Dickov may not strike fear into the hearts of Manchester United supporters, the pair have notched up 14 goals between them this season.

United did the double over Leicester in season 2001/2002, and another victory over the Midlands club will give Ferguson a chance to use more young players in future rounds.

However, it isn’t just United who are focused on league affairs, as Leicester defender Gerry Taggart explained. He told the Leicester City website: "They might field an under-strength line-up for the match but even so it provides us with a real test to get our teeth into.

"The league is our main priority this season but all the lads will be keen to give a good account of themselves," the Northern Ireland international said.

Ferguson told MUTV that “some of the fans might be quite surprised” at the United line-up.
One thing that United fans won’t be surprised at, is the visit of hard-working opposition.

MANCHESTER UNITED v LEICESTER CITY - TEAM NEWS:

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to turn to his youngsters for the Worthington Cup tie against Leicester - but he has promised he will field a strong side.

Kieran Richardson, Lee Roche, Paul Tierney, Danny Pugh, Madds Timm and Daniel Nardiello are likely to join forces with some of the regulars including John O'Shea who has broken into the senior ranks.

Spanish goalkeeper Ricardo is expected to start his first game at Old Trafford as Fabien Barthez takes a rest.

Ferguson has hinted he might give Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes a game as they continue their comeback after surgery.

Meanwhile, Leicester manager Micky Adams will wait until the last minute before naming his side.

Several players reported knocks following the win at Portsmouth, a game played in atrocious weather conditions.

Adams told the club's official website: "There are a few players carrying knocks.

"Briane Deane has reported a bit of stiffness so we will assess him and work on what team will serve us best at Old Trafford."

The match is on MUTV at half 10 that's the only thing it's on.

I hope Diego plays tonight and gets another.

COME ON DIEGO

Interesting Team. From MUTV:

Diego's playing on the right. Becks will be playing as a central midfielder. Ole's playing up front with Danny Nardiello and May is partnering Rio with JOS playing as a left back.

It'll be interesting to see how Diego does on the right.
