We'll never die, we'll never die
Sir Alex Ferguson has told his Manchester United side to maintain their work ethic against West Ham - or pay the price.

United will go level on points with Arsenal if they overcome the Premiership's bottom side and there is a renewed wave of optimism at Old Trafford despite a number of injuries to key players after six successive victories.

Ferguson, however, insists they must keep their foot on the pedal in the race for top spot.

"Players can be motivated very easily in games like Liverpool, Arsenal and European ties but the bread-and-butter matches are also very important," said the United boss.

"Games like this one against West Ham, who are bottom of the table, are ones you need to win.

"They will come here fighting, knowing they beat us twice last season. I have to make sure we work as hard as West Ham. With the confidence we are showing at the moment we have a chance.

"I have been delighted with the performances of the team and we are now in a very busy period.

"A lot of things become definitive. Come January 1, you'll get the shape of the top and the bottom of the league going into the second half of the season.

"We want to be in the top part and challenging for the lead. We can look forward to the next three months if we perform properly."

Ferguson has offered his support to under-fire Hammers boss Glenn Roeder.

"I have been surprised and disappointed that he has come in for some flak." said Ferguson.

"I have been talking about us needing a break, he needs a break himself. You wonder how a team with their ability are bottom of the league."

Ferguson admits he is reluctant to change a winning team and England captain David Beckham could again be on the bench after recovering from a rib injury.

Rio Ferdinand is again out with a thigh problem but fellow defender Laurent Blanc returns to the squad after a calf strain.

Ferguson looks likely to stick with the central defensive partnership of Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre.

Christian Dailly has told West Ham fans: "We're desperate to win for you."

The Scotland defender insists the Hammers players are unaffected by criticism - unless it comes from their own supporters.

"The fans are well within their rights to do whatever they feel. They support the club and come to watch every week - and that is part and parcel of the game as well," said Dailly, as he prepared for tomorrow's trip to Manchester United.

"We are absolutely desperate to win for the fans and have been putting so much effort in, despite some kicks in the teeth.

"But it is important we keep showing the same level of attitude, and only by doing that can we get out the other side.

"We have just got to keep playing, and there is absolutely no way anyone is feeling sorry for themselves - no chance."

Dailly believes the Hammers` team spirit will carry them through.

"There is great togetherness here. While others talk about us, we will just keep getting on with it," he said.

"We are now looking forward to Manchester United. It should be a cracking game, and there is no fear."

West Ham manager Glenn Roeder is keeping his cards close to his chest as he plans for the brief opening of the transfer window in January.

Roeder has been linked with with Gabriel Batistuta of Roma, FC Copenhagen's Bora Zivkovic and Monaco's Shabani Nonda - but he told the club's website: "There is nothing to say.

"There is lots of speculation about at the moment, not just concerning West Ham and what players might be coming to us, but linking players with all the other Premiership clubs.

"Suddenly the transfer season is getting close to being up and running, and the papers haven't had anything to write about in terms of transfer news over the last few months.

"All their attention has been elsewhere on other matters. But now the transfer window is about to open, and everyone is being linked with all sorts of players."

West Ham club captain Steve Lomas is hoping to have recovered from an ankle injury in time for the clash with Manchester United.

If the midfielder Lomas fails to make the game at Old Trafford, Joe Cole will skipper the team.

The game has come too soon, though, for French striker Freddie Kanoute (groin) and midfielder Don Hutchison (knee).

Well, I think Rio's definitely out cos i saw him coming out of the training ground around 2ish, whenever ive seen them coming out later than all the other players its usually cos theyve stayed behind for physio etc.

BUT, our defence is now looking solid, so no matter for the moment.

Team news:

Man Utd are unchanged from the midweek win over Deportivo, so David Beckham and Laurent Blanc are still on the bench.

Edouard Cisse and Nigel Winterburn are injured for West Ham, so Steve Lomas and Scott Minto come in. Joe Cole keeps the captaincy, while Rio Ferdinand's younger brother Anton is on the bench.

This is as big a test as Arsenal and Liverpool.

So often we slip up against teams who are not doing too well.

No-one should underestimate WH who are fighting for survival. And it's just as likely that we'll come unstuck when not expected to, in exactly the same way as we put in great performances when not expected to.

I'm not counting any chickens atm.

Blanc on the bench instead of Rio? Didn't expect that.

Alex is stressing consistency and hard work, he's dead right, it was a terrible performance against them earlier this season. I think Brown and Silvestre are well suited to dealing with Defoe, both as fast and more powerful than that midget.

I'm sticking with my 7-1 prediction. :D

I think we'll batter them, their defence is truly awful, and they're useless at getting the ball back, our form couldn't be more different to theirs, and I'm sure that Alex's words about hard work and not slipping up against the lesser teams will have been heeded. Its time someone (other than Newcastle ) got hammered. ;)
