Seen those Gordon ones given loads of times.
Agreed, I think it looks a one in real time.

What’s the point of VAR, though, if all those replays from different angles in slow-mo lead to that decision? I think, at the very least, the decision to play in wasn’t a clear and obvious error.

Easiest yellow ever for Toney for stopping a counter. Has there ever been a more cynical, deliberate foul ever made?

nah says the ref

Credit to @BeforeKeanetherewasRobson for posting a link (in the Matchday thread) many of us can view as the links above are copyright blocked, though could be an outside England/Britain block.

There is no way any person who has played the sport can call this a foul by the defender. I fully anticipate an apology given to West Ham. Are there any Hammers in the media that will kick up a fuss?

It does seem kind of ridiculous. If that's the other way round with Gordon going for a shot and Phillips just sticking his foot in the way then it's a penalty. It can't be a penalty both fecking ways.

Was there any replay of the Jorgensen booking for Brentford? The commentator mentioned it was being checked by VAR but Sky didn't bother to show it.

The Gordon penalty is just yet another example of refs getting discombobulated by slow motion. They are assessing slow-motion replays through the same lens as real-time. They’re also breaking up the incidents into micro-movements and then judging each in isolation.

While they’re all ploughing on head-down making these decisions, someone needs to take a step back and realise how insane it is that the game is effectively being redesigned around VAR interpretations.

2 cards for 32 fouls. And those cards was not even for fouls.

We on other hand get cards for fun. No wonder some other teams can play without getting their players suspended.

Odegaard gets his fair share allowance of bundling players over and committing fouls doesn't he.

Well put, particularly the bolded bit.

This wasn't it. This was a case of refs(both on pitch and VAR) haven't only a vague notion of the existence of a sport called football

Why they are officiating Premier League games is the real question/problem

That penalty for Chelsea was another pathetic one

C. A piss-take by incompetent officials

How can sticking your leg between a players swinging foot and the ball with no intention of playing the ball ever be considered a foul in your favour? It's madness.
Absolutely. It would be different if Gordon had moved ahead his body of Philips and was in the process of taking a touch of the ball ahead of him. It was miles away from being close to a penalty.

It’s truly bizarre that they all felt that was a penalty, even acknowledging that Gordon was nowhere near the ball. If Phillips had been lining up a shot and Gordon had desperately stuck a leg in the way with no chance of getting the ball, would he have got a foul in his favour in that scenario? It’s just terrible interpretation of the rules.

Well as the referee said, he's kicked him, so it's pretty simple.

Of course it would be a foul.

Kicking someone and someone putting their leg in front of your swinging leg when you're attempting to kick the ball are two very different things.

Are you suggesting any time an attacker is taking a shot on goal, the defender, who has no hope of reaching the ball, should just stick his leg in front of the attackers swinging leg and bingo, free out?

Yea, putting yourself between the man and the ball.

There has to be a limit. Yes you can put yourself there to stop him from attempting to kick the ball, but to blindside him as he's in the process of kicking the ball and potentially injure yourself or the kicker should potentially be considered dangerous play, surely?

Yes I agree, but I image to the letter of the law, that's how it is. It would be a horrible thing to have to judge.

Letter of the law, maybe but I think they could have used discretion on this one and there wouldn't have been too many complaints. If it becomes a trend I'd say they'll have to do something about it.

Gordon comes round the back of him, sticks his leg across as Phillips is kicking the ball. For me that's a foul by Gordon as he's come form behind and fouled the player who is in possession of the ball.

He should have fell on the ground and clutched his leg and howled. That is the only way that non-United players can get a penalty nowadays.
No then the racism kicks in. Dirty brown bearded foreigner rolling out. Look at him.

This one was utterly ignored by ref and VAR alike against Brighton.

Because it wasn't a foul, Salah turns into the defender. They used a bad angle on purpose there

I don't see how anyone can call that a penalty. Ridiculous decision and even more ridiculously those gowls on sky are willing to backup that decision.

Hadn’t seen that until now. Jesus. Awful decision. Gordon fouls Philips, if anything. Swings at the ball, missed it completely, and blocks Philips attempt to play the ball. Free out.

It’s so obviously incorrect it’s actually hilarious. Imagine Philips was a striker taking a shot at goal and Gordon a defender trying to win the ball inside his own box? You couldn’t ask for a more obvious example of a penalty.
Exactly! The worst part is the ref played on and VAR intervened so obviously they thought this was a 'clear and obvious error'

I just can't cope with some of this shit anymore

It’s worse I think. Gordon knows he isn’t going to get the ball and has no intention of trying to kick it. His sole intention is to get his foot in front of Phillips, so that he blocks him from playing the ball and (hopefully) wins a completely undeserved penalty.

It’s an obvious foul by Gordon if anyone with any intelligence considers it but any sense of ability to properly interpret that sort of incident seems to have gone out the window nowadays.

Wonder if Robert Jones will be receiving a foreign officiating gig soon, or if sending off Gordon ended that chance despite two ludicrous penalties given that practically gave Newcastle points?

Not to defend Robert Jones but David Coote was on VAR, he's possibly the worst referee in the league.
