Obvious: Jones, Rojo, Lingard, Ighalo.
Not good enough: Lindelöf, Fred
Wouldn't lose any sleep if he left: Martial

I think we have an option to extend Lingard's contract for another year to 2022. Which is exactly the kind of thing they'll do if they think they can get any money for him; same for Romero. Only Rojo, Grant, and TFM are certain to go next summer; provided they agree no extension. Grant played just 1 competitive game for us and will be 38 next summer. I guess they'll try to persuade TFM to sign a contract extension. Rojo's wages are so high it makes sense to let him leave in January; but one hand, or accountant, doesn't know what they other's doing so maybe not.Romero - only due to us recalling Henderson though
Jones - seriously just retire, you're utterly useless
Lingard - he's out of contract in the summer isn't he?
Rojo - can't believe he's still here tbh and I guess proof that we might not have seen the last of Andreas and Dalot just yet
Those are the 4 that surely can't survive another year at the club after them I think you're looking at Dan James next unfortunately just as the drop off from the normal front 3 and him is just so huge that even as an impact sub he's now looking pretty useless
Shaw isn’t. Romero is tbf. Shaw has a use in the squad as a rotation option with Telles and Williams. With Romero, the guy is of essentially no use now to the club. He’s 4th choice as Grant has been making the bench in cup games this season, isn’t an idolised figure at the club for young gks (that would be DDG, you don’t want to grow up to warm the bench) and going by all the stories, Grant is the one who the attackers ask to stay back for finishing practice. Romero was good before this season and became somewhat of a cult hero at the club as the best backup gk in the world, but his time at United is up now. He is deadwood, and we should have sold him to Everton as per his wish. Instead, he is just banking £70k every week while doing nothing.Shaw and Romero aren't deadwood. That's a little bit harsh.
Rojo, Jones and Lingard definitely are.
The squad has improved a lot in terms of quality over the past few years to be honest. Though not all of our signings in Ole's reign we can agree on, we got rid of many players that have no business being here.
Yes. Ridiculous asking prices. Even in this day and age, an aging, unfit and let’s be honest, awful Phil Jones is hardly even worth a million Pounds. We wanted £25m for Lingard too when Spurs apparently came sniffing. Just smacks of incompetence at the top.United supposedly looking for 20m for Phil Jones may explain why so many of these 'deadwood' players remain here.
Hmmm. People are posting their lists of who they think needs to get shipped out. This doesn't seem to be a thread about current deadwood in the squad.
IIRC when Ole took the job there were stories that he'd highlighted thirteen players who had to go and there were long term plans to ship them out in chunks. Assuming this was true, then in no particular order, and just based on what he's done:With Juan Mata's current resurgence and alot of players now gone who we all knew had seen better days...
With no more Sanchez, Young or Smalling. Pereira and Dalot out on loans and in the shop window.
Who is left that you would identify as deadwood?
I'd go with sell/release on a free:
Jones
Can have one more season before a ruthless decision can be made:
Rojo
Shaw
Bailly
Lingard
IMHO: the 'squad' is the first team training squad, which I estimate is 34 players. 28 'seniors', plus 6 who qualify as B-list. That 34, has 5 goalies, and 10 who've played CB for us. We're not moving players out because we're asking too much. We need to cut our asking prices in half or less to move some out in January. This doesn't seem to be a thread about current deadwood in the squad.
I thought deadwood meant players who have no use currently, so Rojo, Romero, Jones, Ighalo, and Lingard.Hmmm. People are posting their lists of who they think needs to get shipped out.
Do you mean people are including way too many players who are out on loan and not literally currently in the registered squad?.
Ah, got it. You're disagreeing with players they're including in their lists.I thought deadwood meant players who have no use currently, so Rojo, Romero, Jones, Ighalo, and Lingard.
Other mentions like Shaw, James, Lindelof, and the likes don't belong in a thread about deadwood.
Smalling wasn't on the list but wanted to leave.Hmmm. People are posting their lists of who they think needs to get shipped out.
Do you mean people are including way too many players who are out on loan and not literally currently in the registered squad?
IIRC when Ole took the job there were stories that he'd highlighted thirteen players who had to go and there were long term plans to ship them out in chunks. Assuming this was true, then in no particular order, and just based on what he's done:
1. Fellaini
2. Lukaku
3. Young
4. Sanchez
5. Smalling
6. Lingard
7. Pereira
8. Valencia
That first group are the ones which probably 95% of the caf will agree would have been on that list. Ditto the next three.
9. Dalot
10. Jones
11. Rojo
The remaining two are tricky.
Agreed. Fans confusing deadwood with players they want out.I thought deadwood meant players who have no use currently, so Rojo, Romero, Jones, Ighalo, and Lingard.
Other mentions like Shaw, James, Lindelof, and the likes don't belong in a thread about deadwood.
‘Supposedly’United supposedly looking for 20m for Phil Jones may explain why so many of these 'deadwood' players remain here.
Agree with this. Unless there were literally no takers for any of them, I'm finding hard to understand why any of them are still at the club (obviously not uncle Iggy). Romero seemed like he was pushing for a move though perhaps left it a bit late, while the likes of Rojo and Jones both should have been out the door. These are definites. Lingard and Mata still have their roles as squad players, especially given that we don't have that many attackers. If you look at players who can or will play in our front 4, it's Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, Bruno, Cavani, James, VdB, Mata, Lingard. That's 2 attacks, plus 1 extra. Any attacker we sign will knock one of Lingard/Mata/James into being unnecessary. Probably Lingard, as Mata seems like he'd be happy enough in his role retiring here. Lingard is still at an age where you expect he'll want regular football, so I'd guess he'll move on.
- Romero
- Grant (basically a coach anyway though)
- Jones
- Rojo
- Ighalo (loan til January only so no biggie)
That's no doubt another prime example of why it's best not to believe everything you read, particularly in relation to United.United supposedly looking for 20m for Phil Jones may explain why so many of these 'deadwood' players remain here.
Just proves we are being run by absoloute idiots. No one is going to pay that amount for a 28 year old sick note. Jose did not rate him, and neither does Ole, yet we are paying him 4 million£ a year to sit on the bench.United supposedly looking for 20m for Phil Jones may explain why so many of these 'deadwood' players remain here.
OK, So the £20m may be a guess. But we are definitely asking too much for players we don't need, who don't play, buy get paid £4m to £5m each year in wages. That's no doubt another prime example of why it's best not to believe everything you read, particularly in relation to United.
Yakuza shouldn't have soft spots. It's unbelievable that Shaw was mentioned in the deadwood list. He was one of our player of the season 1 or 2 year ago. He has his injury problem but still a very good player when fit. This season he will be very important for us to go all out on epl, CL and FA Cup.
I always have soft spot for Jones. His commitment, bravery and always give his all was exemplary. Injuries killed his career. What a pity. When he was having a consistent run of games he was a superb CB.
I imagine they're not very tasty either.aren't food enough at the top level
Would that not be classed as cruelty as opposed to a goodwill gesture?A bit tight to call Romero deadwood imo
Jesse will have a role to play this season I feel
Jones - We should gift him to a club as a good will gesture
Bailly - Too many injuries
Ole has done a good job of moving players on, gotta give him that
Yes it's gotta be his biggest achievement so far. He should've been allowed to spend more in the transfer window I believe. Would like to see the wage bill when he took over vs now.Hmmm. People are posting their lists of who they think needs to get shipped out.
