World Cup quiz questions

Add in the question about who was the only welsh speaking player to win a world cup.

The answer being Sergio Batista who won it with Argentina and grew up in a welsh speaking area in Argentina.

Am using that one!
This is going to be a hard quiz I think.......

When was the last time a player playing for Man Utd won the world cup

Name the only team to score in a final without the other team touching the ball.

Just youtubed it.

They did touch the ball but the game had stopped .

The Totally Football Show podcast with James Richardson had some good World Cup questions from the Opta annual quiz this week. Off the top of my head, one of them was name the country who have only played a single World Cup match. Another was name the only player to have scored hat tricks in consecutive World Cups.

I think those are the questions, but probably worth listening to it and checking! They were also providing the answers later in the show, but I haven't listened to the rest of it yet.

Nah. It's a famous game, Holland scoring very early, everything thinking it's gonna be a slaughter, and then .... classic Germany.

I was kidding about the google.

There was also two pens that final . Maybe thats another question if it was the only one .

Indonesia?

Difficult ones to google:

Who is the most fouled player in World Cup history?
Which striker has the best ratio of scoring goals to the number of chances they had?
Which player has made the most passes in a single World Cup?
Which teams have exited the World Cup without losing a game?
Who is the only team to have been unbeaten in qualifying but did not qualify for the World Cup?
This is since OPTA started tracking in 1966 I guess.

Maradona?
Lineker or Oleg Salenko? There has to be some defender who had just one chance and scored though.
Xavi in 2010 would be too obvious?
England in 1982, Brazil in 1978, Egypt in 1990. England in 1958?
England in 1978?

All correct except for the question about the brothers, but looking at it I worded it wrongly - it is meant to be which brothers played for different nations at the same finals. The way it is worded though, your answers are right.
And the question about which team performed best at their first finals, I was thinking of Croatia but Uruguay is obviously right as well - tricked myself with that one !!

Don’t know, 1978?
Holland
South Korea 2002?
Ghana and Germany
Australia

1 and 3 are wrong, others are correct, although read my previous post regarding the wording of the brothers question.

1998
Netherlands
Uruguay in 1930, Italy in 1934 won it
Germany in 1982 and/or 1986, England in 1966 (edit: misread the question thought about brothers playing a world cup final together)
Australia
Indonesia or whatever it was named in '38, Haiti
answered that one already
Iceland; Uruguay

This quiz is great, you can steal some questions of them:
https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...d-cup-2014-the-ultimate-world-cup-trivia-quiz

Questions like 15, 16, Rivaldo's injury etc. are both not that hard and pretty fun

edit: especially this one

What prevented USA physio Jack Coll from treating one of his players in the second half of the team's semi-final against Argentina in 1930?
He dropped his bag, smashed and bottle of chloroform and knocked himself out

18/30.Disappointing effort it says

What was remarkable about the penalty the Netherlands received in the 1974 World Cup Final?

Around what issue was there a naming dispute before the 2002 WC?

The Hector Castro question was great - I had no idea.

You are right about Italy and Uruguay, I was thinking of Croatia...
The brothers one, as I posted earlier, I worded this wrongly, was thinking of the two that played for different countries in the same competition. Think they might even have played against each other..
Indonesia was called the Dutch East Indies at the time, good point, I missed them, there are at least two others I can think of.

How about, a fun question such as – The England badge has three lions on it, what are the names of each of these lions?

Of course it is googleable but can be tricky enough to find as Google tends to go to symbolism, Royal Arms and Emblems…

I can think of two off the top of my head, countries that have only ever qualified once for the Finals.
