Isn't this a myth? Sure it was the other knee.

Iain Hume (playing for Barnsley at the time) suffered a fractured skull and internal bleeding following an elbow to the head
Eduardo suffered a broken fibula and open dislocation of his left tackle. Martin Taylor:mad:
Ewald Lienen suffered a severe injury, as Norbert Siegmann of Werder Bremen slit his thigh open with his studs resulting in an open deep wound of 25 cm (10 in), exposing his muscles and femur.

John Thomson, who is supposed to have been one of the greatest goalkeepers of his time, received plenty bad injuries in his time playing for Celtic, including a broken jaw, broken collarbone, smashed teeth etc but sadly his career, and much more importantly his life, was cut short after receiving a fatal kick to the head while diving at the feet of a Rangers player in the Old Firm Derby. He was rushed to hospital but died from his injury.
I was unsure if I should mention him here, and I'm not suggesting death is an Injury but when I saw Petr Czech mentioned I thought people who have an interest in the history of the game, might be interested to read more about him.

Not sure if it counts, as he wasn't injured on the pitch, but this injury cost him a career (and a life if we're being honest). Same goes for Lentini — to a lesser extent, obviously.

Valery Voronin. Felt asleep at the wheel and rammed into a huge truck. Was pronounced clinically dead, lost half of his face, doctors had to do a few face reconstruction surgeries. He came back and even played for his club again (a few games over the course of 2 seasons, Yashin even let him score a goal), but he was never the same. Physically, obviously, but also psychologically — he became depressed (never got used to his new appearance) and drowned his sorrows in alcohol. Got killed by someone, no one knows who, in what looked like a drunk fight.

Ewald Lienen

I think Cazorla could've had his leg amputated. Its a miracle that he is still playing, let alone at the highest professional level.

Niels Kokmeijer. He might be lesser known, as he was a bang average player in a bang average squad in the Netherlands, but seeing the tackle on him really make my stomach turn back then. He had multiple double fractures in his leg, a torn artery and some destroyed nerves. He had to spend two months in hospital to recover. Not only was he never able to play again, but initially doctors expected him to never walk again. He sued the perpetraitor for damages in a civil suit btw - and won...

This is not a good thread in how it assembles all the horrors under one roof as it were. And pictures as well, :(.

Players have been killed or nearly died - I can think of getting on for half a dozen in fact.

I'm not saying anyone is a terrible person, it just doesn't look that great to me.

Sorry.

I recall Leonardo's elbow assault on Tab Ramos in the 94 WC that resulted in a skull fracture. Ramos missed a few months and never regained his prior peak performance level.

Van Basten comes to mind, if we're talking about career ending injuries.

David Busst. It’s got to be the worst leg injury the league has seen. There was blood all over the grass and Schmeichel actually chucked up.

He contracted MRSA while in hospital, too. In the end he was lucky not to lose his leg. It pretty ended his career, sadly.

Cisse’s leg break for France and Larsson’s break at Celtic alwaus stick out as being particularly horrible. Eduardo, too.

Read Busst's wiki page which also listed injuries to Eduardo, Nilis, and a guy named Preston Burpo, an average keeper playing in the MLS when he suffered a horrific injury in 2010 that effectively ended his playing career.

On May 29, 2010, in a game against New York Red Bulls, Burpo's tibia and fibula snapped when he collided with NYRB striker Dane Richards while challenging for the ball at the edge of his penalty area;[5][6] many observers compared the injury to the one which ended the career of American football star Joe Theismann in 1985[citation needed], and the similar double-break which ended the career of English Premier League player David Busst in 1996.
