The correct way to decide who's champion at the end of the season.

Without cheating, who's currently holding the title?

City started the season as Champions, and lost the title during their first game of the season.

Moyes' boys at West Ham United won it by defeating Liverpool. Who won it off Palace, who got it by defeating Spurs who won it from City

I'd love to see someone nerdy enough to go all the way back to the beginning of English football and trace the path of the Championship, like UFWC did, though I suspect it's much easier to do for international football.

Maybe from the start of the Premier League era instead. Leeds start as the reigning champions and take it from there.

If you go all the way back, it's not that unlikely that at some point the reigning champions were dissolved.

Even with the second one it's possible given that at some point a team may well have taken it down with them upon relegation.

Good point.

Or if it did manage to avoid a folded team, the title belt could be bouncing around in the lower leagues right now, and we just don't know it. Especially if you were to factor in FA Cup and League Cup games.

I might be sad enough to try and trace it back to start of the PL.

We might find out that Accrington Stanley are the Ric Flair of the football, and are 17x world champions

If we are taking just PL games into account, WHU are still the champions.

Superstar! How on earth did you pull all that data together so quickly?

I take it the title didn't ever drop out of the Premier League, such as a relegated team beating a title holder on the final day or something.

Got lucky that the title stayed in PL throughout, else it would have been a pain. And you just needed to append all the results sorted on date and apply a couple of basic formulas.

As far as finding the current champions was concerned, I think that could have been done in an easier manner. One could have started with Pool in 19/20 season and then worked on that as they beat everyone before losing to Watford - the only issue could have been if the title is in PL or not

In the dataset I'm using, I'm seeing Southampton and Norwich finished 1-1, and that's where the disconnect is coming from I believe

https://footballcsv.github.io/

Edit: Just checked, and found out the issue. It was excel converting those scorelines to dates, and all.

Edit2: The title did go to championship a couple of times, once in 1999-00 with SHU going down and once with Newcastle's relegation in 15-16. However, Norwich came up as champions a couple of seasons go and the title has remained here ever since.

The title count and exchange count however will be different
