From what I’ve seen live in my lifetime (26 years old):

- - - - Neuer - - - - - -
D.Alves - Ramos - Ferdinand - - Marcelo
- - - - - Modric - - Xavi - - Zidane - - - -
- -Messi - - - - - Suarez - - -C.Ronaldo

Guys like R9, Carlos, etc were already past their best by the time I started watching religiously in 2004-05. Zidane still had his monstrous 2006 WC to bow out though so I was able to witness that live.

It was also a toss up between neuer and casillas in goal for me as the former was great for most of the ‘10s while Casillas was regarded #1 from like ‘07-12 which coincided with Spain’s golden generation and unprecedented 3 consecutive tournament triumphs.

For #9, it was between Lewandowski and Suarez as the best striker of the last 15 years of me watching. Suarez takes it for his absolute peak level as he was utterly unplayable in his prime (13/14) even though Lewandowski ousts him on sheer longevity which has been almost machine like.

Modric is still personally the best midfielder I’ve seen in the last 15 years and he’s still world class at 35. He’s severely underrated IMO.

No point putting in Ronaldo or Messi. They're obviously head and shoulders above the rest. But an XI out of what's left...

Schmeichel

Lahm
Nesta
Ferdinand
Maldini

Zidane
Xavi
Scholes

Henry
Ronaldo
Ronaldinho

I opted for a 4-4-2 but this team can play in pretty much any formation

-------------------------------Zlatan------------------------
Zlatan--------Zlatan-------------Zlatan-----Zlatan
Zlatan-------Zlatan------------Zlatan---------Zlatan
-----------------Zlatan-------------Zlatan------------------

Zlatan is good and all but no chance he beats a Team of Gary Breen's. The chant even sounds better... We all dream of a team of Zlatan's, just doesn't have the same ring to it.

And Gary Breen scored at a world cup.

3-2-3-2 with Gary Breen as player manager.

-----------------Gary Breen----------------------

Gary Breen - Gary Breen - Gary Breen

------Gary Breen--Gary Breen---------

Gary Breen - Gary Breen - Gary Breen

------Gary Breen--Gary Breen---------

I am sure you are right but I’m too young (I would put Beckenbauer, Baresi and others in it ahead of Ramos) the OP said of what you’ve seen.
Understood. All those were as you say brilliant players.

Based purely off what I watched:
Neuer ( yes ahead of buffon)
Dani Alves
Vidic (don't understand why people here prefer Rio, from 08 to 11, he was the best cb in the world)
Nesta
Roberto Carlos ( I watched old man maldini);
Xavi
Keane;
Messi
Ronaldinho (more consistent effective and productive magic than zidane)
CR7;
Henry ( I didnt watch prime r9, I watched r9 from 02, i thought Henry was better then)

Feel free to debate

Wouldn't classify this as a starting XI of absolute best players I've seen, considering glaring omissions like Messi, Cristiano, Xavi and so forth. But, it is definitely functional (as in the whole should be greater than the sum of individual parts from a theoretical standpoint) and one that I would pay to watch, specifically under peak Fergie, who is obviously the best manager of my lifetime. :)

Cantona—Fenômeno
Giggs—Redondo—Keane—Beckham
Maldini—Vidić—Ferdinand—Zanetti
van der Sar
  • Defense: pretty good, even with the omission of Nesta, Cafú, Buffon and co. Two all-time great fullbacks bookending the outstanding central core of Edwin, Ferdinand and Vidić. Also, I like the balance on the flanks — as they were all willing runners with an outstanding workrate.
  • Midfield: saw no reason to surgically dissect and dismantle 4—4—2 perfection, given how they affected games on the ball and how they worked as a unit off it. Redondo should be a seamless fit, and provides a unique combination of silk and steel to the trademark United midfield. Tempted by Schweinsteiger, Davids and co. but Fergie was always full of praise for El Príncipe:

  • Attack: Ronaldo expanding the pitch in inimitable fashion...especially on counters, and Cantona (only witnessed the last stages of his career but ok) working his magic in the hole.
That midfield.....jeez....that's scary

This probably wouldn't work all that well though, since there are too many egos up front. But you asked for the best I saw in my lifetime and here they are.

Manager: Johan Cruyff
4-3-3

Schmeichel
Cafú-Baresi-Puyol-Maldini
Keane
Xavi-Laudrup
CR-Messi-Ronaldinho

The only problem with that IX would be to accommodate CR's ego and anxieties.

Not including Matthaus in any World XI is borderline criminal.

Ah! Not the best in absolute terms, but I like that team A LOT

Schmeichel

Cafu - Ferdinand - Baresi - Maldini

Rijkaard - Matthaus

Messi - Maradona - Ronaldinho

L.Ronaldo
From the 80s onward, this attack has to be the real best of the best without any doubt imho.
And it would 100% work as a real team, with that duo holding the midfield.
Apart from Maldini, I'd pick different in defence and goal but that's just me.
