Don't rely on quotes, you might not get the concept right, one of the reasons barca want him out is because he isn't great at playing between the lines waiting for the ball to arrive to him in advance areas, when they say he roams it more to deeper areas to get on the ball before carrying it forward, he isn't the type to find the final ball or score goals, he dictate the flow of the game in deep areas with his agility and technique, he drives forward in moments when the opponent commit to pressing him, something they wouldn't do often because its as pointless as pressing Messi, so most games he is at the base of midfield recycling possession looking to play into the forwards feet, creating triangles, plus he isn't one to commit by pressing he is more likely to read and intercept, he'll be aggressive but not covering every blade of grass type.
He is not a Casemiro type quite unique so I see why there's the debate about his positioning.

No one is relying on quotes. And of course he can play between the lines by the way. He is just better and prefers playing from deep

Yeah he blows hot and cold…his cold however is McTominays hot. It’s a no brainer for me.

get him in and get McT further from our starting line up

If you are getting rid of Bruno yes
Another option might be eriksen to play say 65% of games sometimes as a Bruno replacement sometimes as Ronaldo replacement. Playing like behuis did

ETH must feel like a kid in a candy store right now. Options with a less limited budget than over at Ajax.

Never been impressed by him to be honest and find him decidedly average.
Can't see us going for him.

Even though he wouldn't cost the earth now something doesn't sit right with me about him. Having said that Leicester were shite last season and not many players looked great for them.

Would be wise to negotiate a deal in case De Jong falls through.

I hope there’s a better option mind but doubt it.

Excellent player. Surprised anyone would turn their nose up at him.

That being said, I wouldn't really see him and FDJ as a partnership. Both need that hard runner next to them, which is why Bissouma would have been really obvious.

Other than the fact he has been absolute dog shit for a year, now yeah the team he played in was dog shit too, but Tielemans looked dire any time he played last year. Prior to that he had been fairly average and wasnt living up to his promise. Came in played well for a year and then went backwards, so yeah I am not convinced at all by Tielemans.

I rate him. Can only see him being a target if Eriksen decides not to come. So we will see.

He got overplayed massively. A bit like a lot of United players after that EC. He was Leicesters player of the year in 2020/2021 and plays a key part in a good Belgian squad. Even on a bad day he's twice the player McTominay is. No brainer to me.

I think he may have been a target prior to ETH joining.

Now, he would probably have been pushed to the bottom of the queue in terms of our transfer priorities.

I think he would be a good squad player but I doubt he’d come here to sit on the bench.

I may be wrong but I don't think De Jong had a 'runner' next to him at Ajax? Him needing a box-to-box partner seems a myth that has grown into reality. I seem to recall De Jong being very defensive, just in front of the defenders and dictating play from deep. And he said recently he likes to be the first midfielder to receive the ball.

I'd feel comfortable with De Jong and Tielemans as a CM pair, especially as Fernandes and Van De Beek, who I guess will be fighting for the #10 role, both seem to cover decent ground.

I think you are mixing two things up, FdJ generally needs a Box to Box grafter, not a DM like most people seem to claim on here. He needs a player who can chase down in midfield so he can sit back and play as deep lying playmaker, he also needs someone who can drop in a cover if he drifts forward to create. I think Fred will be sufficient this year to do that. Fred has shown that he can chase down and press when asked, and in a more structured team where he is not alongside McT or Pogba he will do better.

I think he was a bit overrated at one point but he wouldn't be a bad signing for £25m.

His stats last season were overall good despite playing in an underperforming team.

Tielemans has no defensive awareness and his activity without the ball is an absolute mystery and has always been. I would be extremely worried if he was paired with anyone that isn't focused on covering for him.

Fair enough. I haven't seen Tielemans regularly enough to say for certain how he plays. I just know his passing is quite decent.

Good point. The FdJ factor may change our traditional structure.

Tielemans is close to a poor version of Pogba, same shortcomings but worse in every ways.

He’s an excellent player, but he probably wouldn’t work in a pivot with FDJ.

Really? Tielemans has more goals per 90 minutes, better passing, more blocks, more tackles and more interceptions. Pogba has more assists.

Not saying that Pogba isn't the better player but for the price suggested we could do a lot worse than Tielemans, and I doubt he wouldn't be an upgrade on all of our midfielders.

Yes really. In terms of tackles, interceptions, pressures or blocks they are in the same ball park and it's a shortcoming for both. Career tackles per 90 one is at 2 the other at 2.1, interception both at 1.1, blocks 1.3 the other 1. Pogba has a bit more pressures per game but it's close and both are below average.

If we intend to use a midfield three, then Tielemans could be a decent squad option but as De Jong's partner in a midfield two, I'm definitely not confident.

This sounds great for the main player I want

Or what if FdJ gets injured? Who do we have to sub in for him?

I dont think we can start thinking about backups when we have various holes in the starting 11.

Tielemans is a good player but, I have my reservations on him playing in the Ten Hag system.
