I'd rather play Fred.
I don't think playing Fred would be a disaster in the short-term but I do think we need a midfielder who is more capable of offering the progression that Eriksen offers in midfield, and Tielemans for a low price/nothing at all seems like a bit of a no-brainer to me.

Agreed that Eriksen has specific qualities that are irreplaceable in the current squad. It's just whether you'd want to commit yourself to a long term deal for Tielemans for a bit of short term relief. I wouldn't.

I think we just disagree on how good Tielemans is, honestly. I reckon in our set-up he'd be a really good player; essentially I think he's struggling to showcase his true ability for Leicester this season because they're not well suited to him and also just not that great.

Given that I don't think for a minute that Frenkie De Jong is going to be available to us this summer, I think Tielemans would actually be a really astute signing for us in the long-run and not just the short-run. That's especially true because he most likely isn't going to cost very much.

Yeah this is essentially what it comes down to. I only want us to sign a central midfielder permanently if he is an improvement on Eriksen. We have enough kids who can compete for a squad role in the near future. If, as you suggest, Tielemans is that man, then by all means sign him up. I think he would be an underwhelming choice, though I agree with you that some of the preferred options may be difficult to acquire.

Would take him as a squad option. Definitely has a questionable attitude and is inconsistent but he has great technique. A better footballer than Fred and McTominay definitely.

Injuries completely wrecked his career. Without all the serious injuries he would have been a helluva player.

Every club in the top 8 could use one more midfielder and nobody's pulling the trigger on him.

No, thanks. Do we have an option to bring Hannibal back ? Again, depends on how long Eriksen is out.

The player has gone missing for the past two years- I would not want him in the squad

We all know we need to find a solution for Eriksen long term. FDJ and Bellingham would be dream signings.

I am not sure as a squad option this would be a bad pic, although ETH's recent push towards quality with chracter makes me think we will pass on this.

We should stay well away. There's a reason why no one else has gone for him.

We are not buying anyone this January. Don’t know why this thread gets bumped up.

What are these character flaws Tielemans has supposed to be?

I follow and watch Leicester fairly regularly because my brother is a fan of them, and I guess the worst I would say about him is that he isn't always the most intense player out there. With that said, his defensive involvement is quantifiably fine (he's average-to-high in tackles, blocks and clearances per 90 compared to the average midfielder and only really performs somewhat poorly on interceptions), and that's probably more than adequate playing alongside Casemiro the vast majority of the time.

He is and always has been a very good progressive player at Leicester. Unless Frenkie is actually available this summer and not for a feck off price, I'm yet to see anybody put forward a better suggestion for the role than Tielemans on a free.

A season ago his stock was really high, its fallen with leicester only fall from their own high standards. Hes a good player, especially on a free.

I would tend to agree. Leicester have fallen off hard this season so I think it's somewhat unfair to entirely dismiss Tielemans because his form hasn't been as impressive as it was in previous seasons (although it still hasn't been bad, honestly).

As I say, unless Frenkie is actually available for a reasonable price again this summer (which will only happen if Barca are in deep shite financially), I think we'll be pretty hard pushed to do better than Tielemans on a free this summer. This is especially true considering that our spending is likely to be capped pretty significantly by the FFP restrictions coming into play, and we still need to make a fair few reinforcements to the squad with the probable inclusion of a very expensive striker.

Surely loan with an obligation to buy if he plays a certain amount of games is a good deal? Ten Hag won't play him if he's not up to scratch so it's not like we'll get lumbered with shite.

He’s free at the end of the season. Why would they do that deal?

I think Loan with an option to buy him would be great deal for us. He will help us provide valuable cover for Eriksen (injured anyway) and Bruno.

Plus if he is not up to it, we don't take the option to buy, I don't see alot of downsides to this transfer.

Exactly, a loan is a non starter for a guy who can leave on a free in six months.
I was baffled. A few people think this could work. This is the club that charged us £80m for Maguire. Now there giving players away for free who are on contracts.
