The new recruits from Desportivo Brasil - Manchester United's South American talent factory | Mail Online

While eyes were fixed on the Old Trafford directors’ box last Saturday to see if Fabio Capello would finally get up close and personal with Rio Ferdinand over the England captaincy issue, many would have missed the five Brazilian boys sitting six rows behind the Italian.

Long after Capello’s discarded skipper ends his career at United, the club hope their tie-up with Sao Paulo academy Desportivo Brasil will provide them with a steady stream of talent.

The process is part of a painstaking two-and-a-half-year project by the Barclays Premier League leaders to develop their own talent in South America rather than splash out huge fees on the next generation of stars.

Confidentiality agreements prevent Desportivo Brasil from revealing which of their 100-plus teenagers have a pre-contract agreement with United, but Sportsmail has learned that the five players pictured at Old Trafford are called Gladstony, Aguilar, Lucas Evangelista, Agnaldo and Rafael Leao.

The five are now visiting Dutch champions Twente, who United plan to use as a holding club for the boys to gain European Union passports.

Midfielders Gladstony and Rafael Leao will be 18 later this year — the age at which they can legally sign for a club outside Brazil — but tight immigration laws in England mean they are unlikely to be granted work permits as, unlike United defenders Rafael or Fabio da Silva, they have not even represented their country at youth level.

This is where Twente come in. Holland will happily let the boys play there, where they can stay until they qualify for an EU passport or get enough international experience for a UK work permit.

Desportivo Brasil is owned by sprawling South American football company Traffic, whose president of international business Jochen Losch told Sportsmail: ‘Twente are a partner, helping United to resolve the problem of their EU passports. For two reasons it’s good that a player goes first to Holland. First, after two or three years he’s considered to be European. And of course it’s easier to play in the Dutch league than the Premier League.’

The players all live inside a multimillion-pound training centre in Porto Feliz, a 90-minute drive from bustling Sao Paulo where they enjoy better training facilities than at most major Brazilian clubs.

But Desportivo Brasil do not dream of winning the league title or the Copa Libertadores; their raison d’etre is to have the best youth teams in South America and sell on their talent.

The designated United players are given extra English lessons, sessions with a psychologist about being away from home and visits to the Carrington training complex they may one day call home.

If United go through with a signing, they pay a set fee, based on a player’s position rather than ability.

The Brazilian academy, set up by Traffic, then retain a hefty 50 per cent sell-on clause.

Losch said: ‘Manchester United look for young players in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. If they find a good one they come to us. We’ll get the player, register him with Desportivo Brasil, and we have a contract with United that they have an option to buy this player at 18 for a fixed amount.

‘If the guy turns out to be an Alexandre Pato (the striker who left Internacional for AC Milan for nearly £20million on his 18th birthday) United can still have him for a huge discount because of course we’ll honour the contract. If they don’t like the player, we keep him.’

The partnership was struck after United’s pursuit of the Da Silva twins. They were first spotted as 15-year-olds but could not be formally taken out of Brazil until their 18th birthday, meaning they risked being neglected in the Fluminense youth team and they never made a senior appearance in Brazil.

One of the brightest hopes on Desportivo Brasil’s books is striker Aguilar, who was 16 a fortnight ago but was called up by Brazil’s Under 17 squad for training in January.

Aguilar was signed by Belo Horizonte side Cruzeiro in 2009. However, because contracts are not valid before a player’s 16th birthday, Desportivo Brasil were able to take him to Porto Feliz a year ago, prompting an angry reaction from Cruzeiro president Zeze Perrella.

Aguilar’s former coach Joao Paulo Tardim said: ‘There is no doubt about his quality. Saying he will become a great player is an exercise in predicting the future, but the chances of it happening are very high.’

English scouts will no doubt be at the Emirates on Sunday to see Brazil, with exciting Santos striker Neymar and Sao Paulo playmaker Lucas, take on Scotland.

But the pair have recently signed contracts setting their value at £39m and £66m respectively.

If United’s project comes off, it will have been a long game worth playing.
This solves the mystery of who those kids at Old Trafford were. It was not even close to being Douglas Costa.

I think this is phenomenal and gives us first dibs on some of the most talented kids from South America. They will be trained and ready to play in Europe before they even come to Europe. Then they will be able to get experience in playing at a good level at Twente before signing for United should we choose to buy them.

Do any other clubs have such agreements? Certainly in terms of English clubs it has to be a first.

Good strategy by the club. Hopefully we can get them cheap before they move to these Portuguese and Russian clubs which demand over the top fees.

This seems groundbreaking to say the least. Must have been kept very hush, as I've never heard of anything like this. Any other clubs have an agreement like this?

This is all very hitler sunk the titanic etc btw.
Yeah this is pretty old news, this partnership came into the light when it was said Dodo would be a United player... Seems like United have stepped up their involvement a bit though, really wonder how sending players to Twente will work out in the end.

Seems a great idea, but it really depends on the level of talents coming through their ranks. Are they getting the best South American young talents or second rate one? Time will tell how effective this system is. Don't know how realistic that part about us liking a player and them going and registering him under their name is. With the biggest talents I doubt it's that easy.

Is he normal?
Massively impressive idea this. Even if we just two or three who make it to the United first team squad in the next say 5-10 years then I'd say we've benefited from this deal.

A substandard bag of meat and bones.
It's old news. The agreement with Traffic was announced in Nov 2008.

The arrangement with Twente is the only real development since then, although not formally announced by United as far as I know.

This is from the Deportivo website:

'Desportivo Brasil athletes watch Manchester United match

Desportivo Brasil and Manchester United have a partnership for the exchange of youth athletes, exchange of training methods and friendly matches. On the last weekend, March 19, some players DB traveled to England and watched a game of the English club.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United beat Bolton by 1- 0, with a goal by the striker Berbatov, and the DB boys could watch the match. Together with the athletes, was the DB’S U-20 and Professional team's coach, Osmar Loss .

Among the players of the team from Porto Feliz, was the midfielder Gladstony, who defended the team in the São Paulo Youth Cup this year, and midfielders Rafael Leão (U-20), Agnaldo and Lucas Evangelista (both U-17).

Remember that after the partnership between the clubs, some DB athletes have trained in the Premier League club.'

The agreement with the club has been there for a while but I am liking the idea that we are actually making the most out of it by trying to get some of their most promising youngsters.

I think part of it is that we help with identifying players in Brazil who they then sign. So the quality should be pretty good.

I think this agreement will only work for Possebon type of player who are talented but not hyped.

The thing is he plays with them.

I am talking about finding players and them registering with Desportivo so we can sign him.
It seems that is exactly what happened with Aguilar.

It is Desportivo's aim to be the best youth side in Brazil and to achieve that they need players like Aguilar. You don't make much money out of Possebon type players.

The image seems to show that "Douglas Costa" was one of those kids:

I think it's generally been accepted now that it wasn't Costa after all, he appears to be the one called Gladstony.

This is like a feature length muppet odyssey. Not just one promising youngster - a whole club....and we get another club in Europe to bed them in for us, in the Netherlands... another hotbed of youth. I'm going to have to take a cold shower

The Kids are the Future
Lucas Evangelista has reportedly agreed to sign with us when he's 18. Could just be regurgitated from the OP article though.

Manchester United have signed Brazilian youngster Lucas Evangelista in a deal that is due to be completed early next year according to Brazil football website Pitaco do gringo's. The player may come to Manchester and train with United's youth teams before the transfer is finished in order to familiarise himself with his new club and surroundings.

The transfer can only be finalised when the player turns 18 which isn't until Febraury. He's very well regarded in Brazil and competed in the Sao Paulo Cup - an under 18 competition - at the age of 16.

Lucas is a versatile midfielder who can perform roles both holding and going forward. Skilful and enthusiastic in attack, he's also aggressive in the tackle. Perhaps he's one of those all-round midfielders we used to have in football before midfield positions became so specialised!

The signing is part of Manchester United's project in Brazil which helps them identify and recruit young talent. Other players who could be set for a career at Old Trafford include Bruno Gomes and Aguilar.

There's also Gladstony who is on loan at Twente in Holland, the player had passport issues but has now managed to obtain an Italian one and is available for Steve McClaren to pick.

Lucas started his youth career with Sao Paulo before moving to Deportivo Brasil which is the club Manchester United have an agreement with. He has been compared to Brazil's Ganso by Brazilian site Olheiros.

It's not known if Manchester United intend to send the player on loan once he arrives and whether work permit issues may dictate the necessity of that.
