Young wants test at highest level - The Independent

Ashley Young has set his sights on playing Champions League football next season after another top class performance in England's otherwise disappointing 2-2 draw with Switzerland.

Young came off the bench to equalise and was named as the man of the match, despite only playing 45 minutes.

With only a year remaining on his contract, he is interesting Manchester United and it is becoming increasingly clear that he is unlikely to be at Aston Villa next season.

Young said: "I'm going to talk to the chairman this week, so we'll see. I want to test myself at the highest level, such as the World Cup, the European Championship and the Champions League."

MANCHESTER UNITED are on the brink of landing England ace Ashley Young from Aston Villa in a near-£20m deal.

Aston Villa have reluctantly allowed ambitious winger Ashley Young to move on in his quest to play regular Champions League football.

The deal for the forward, who has only one more year on his Villa Park contract, will be sealed in the next 48 hours.

Young, 25 – whose value has more than doubled since he moved to the Midlands from Watford in January 2007 – has agreed a four-year contract.

He scored 39 goals in 193 games for Villa and has netted twice in 15 England appearances, the latest being the equaliser in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Switzerland.

Young’s arrival is part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s plan to go for yet another League title.

Having moved ahead of Liverpool with this season’s 19th crown, he wants to increase the gap.

Fergie said: “This is a particularly special one as it means we’ve won the title more than anyone. It’s history and great for the club. It was Liverpool’s time in the 80s, it’s our time now.”

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will this week sign England international star Ashley Young from Aston Villa in a £20million deal.

Villa have reluctantly allowed the ambitious winger to move on in his quest to play regularly on the biggest stage, the Champions League.

The deal for the 25-year-old ace, who has only one more year of his Villa Park contract to run, is set to be finalised in the next 48 hours.

Young, whose value has more than doubled since he moved to the Midlands from Watford in January 2007, has agreed a four-year contract at Old Trafford.

He scored 39 goals in 193 games for Villa and has netted twice in 15 appearances for the senior England side, the latest coming on Saturday when he was a half-time substitute in the Euro 2012 qualifier and netted the second equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Switzerland at Wembley.

Young has been coveted by Liverpool and Manchester City but has set his heart on joining the ranks at Old Trafford, where Ferguson sees him as successor on the wing to Ryan Giggs. His arrival could lead to the departure of Nani, who is wanted by Serie A side Juventus.

Ferguson likes Young's pace and versatility - he is able to play on either flank or as a second striker.

Villa give Young OK to join Utd By GRAHAM HILL

ASTON VILLA have given the green light for Ashley Young's £16million move to Manchester United.
Villa's American owner Randy Lerner is due to meet the winger today.

England ace Young, 25, has only a year left on his contract and wants Champions League football.

Lerner also expects to hold talks with former England boss Steve McClaren in the next 48 hours about the vacant manager's job.

Fans are not keen on the Wally with the Brolly taking over but Villa Park bigwigs are warming to McClaren, who is keen to get back into top-flight management.

If he gets the job, one of his first tasks will be to try and persuade his former Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing to stay.

Downing, 26, is a Liverpool target and is stalling on a new Villa Park deal.

Aston Villa are resigned to losing Ashley Young to Manchester United but the deal may not be finalised until after the winger's wedding this weekend, Press Association Sport understands.

Villa are expected to double the £9 million they paid Watford for Young four-and-a-half years ago.

United and Villa have been in talks to try and complete a deal for the England player.

But it is understood the finer points have still to be thrashed out and that may mean the transfer not going through until after Young has tied the knot in his native Hertfordshire on Saturday.

Young indicated after England's Euro 2012 qualifier with Switzerland on Saturday that he wants to play Champions League football.

He has only 12 months left of his current deal at Villa.

Villa - and the then manager Gerard Houllier - had been braced for the possibility of losing Young after he shelved talks about any possible new contract.

His departure follows on from the loss of other leading players in Gareth Barry and James Milner to Manchester City.

Of more concern to Villa - in addition to appointing a new manager - is trying to ensure they keep hold of their other star winger in Stewart Downing.

He has two years left of his contract but has also shelved talks of a new deal and has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

Sky Sports sources understand Ashley Young's representatives have held talks with Manchester United.

The 25-year-old Aston Villa winger has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer after admitting he wants to challenge himself at a higher level.

No comment has been made by either club but Young's representatives have been in discussions with United this week.

Sir Alex Ferguson is already set to strengthen his squad with the arrival of Phil Jones and Young could be the second English player to make the switch to the Premier League champions during the transfer window.

The England international enjoyed a fruitful season with Villa last term, producing a number of impressive displays despite it being a difficult year of transition at the club.

Young has already revealed that he wants to play in the UEFA Champions League, suggesting that he is set on an exit from Villa Park.

The former Watford midfielder has risen to prominence in recent years and is now considered an important player by England coach Fabio Capello, most recently scoring against Switzerland in a Euro 2012 qualifier last weekend.

Ashley takes Utd's spree up to £55m
By NEIL CUSTIS

ALEX FERGUSON snapped up Ashley Young in a £20million swoop last night.
It took Manchester United's summer spending to a whopping £55m - leaving their title rivals in the shade.

The arrival of Aston Villa's England star Young completes an astonishing hat-trick of Fergsuon buys worth £55m as he begins to build a new dynasty.

Liverpool have shown their intent by splashing out £20m on Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson while Arsenal boss Aesene Wenger has forked out a measly £1m for Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson.

More surprisingly, traditional money-bags clubs Chelsea and Manchester City have yet to spend a penny since the end of the season.

Young, 25, passed a medical at the club's Carrington Training Ground yesterday and put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

Young 'agrees' United deal
Friday 10th June 2011 11:48

Ashley Young has reportedly agreed personal terms ahead of his proposed big-money move from Aston Villa to Manchester United.

The talented forward, who has also undergone a brief medical, is now expected to complete a switch to Old Trafford when he returns from holiday.

It emerged on Thursday that the Premier League champions had held discussions with Young's representatives over a possible switch.

The England international admitted earlier this summer that he was keen to play at the very highest level, sparking speculation that he would leave Villa Park.

United have been credited with a long-term interest in the former Watford player, while Liverpool were also understood to be monitoring the situation.

And Sir Alex Ferguson now looks to have pipped the Reds to yet another transfer target, with Blackburn defender Phil Jones also set to sign for the champions.
