He is my all time footballing hero, I wish others could have been lucky enough to have seen him playing in person. Everyone held their breath every time he got the ball.

Unfortunately I never got to see him (only have clips from tv/internet to go on) but my father in law reckons he was the best player he has ever seen!

In a world of my own. People know me here.
My favourite memory of George Best was the 6 goals he scored against Northampton in the 1970 FA Cup. As a 12 year old, football mad kid, I couldn't sleep with excitement on Saturday night because the highlights of the match were to be shown on ITV the following day. People didn't score 6 goals in a competitive football match. It simply wasn't done. & this young lad watched in open-mouthed amazement as I witnessed the incredible sight of a player scoring a double hat-trick right before my very eyes.

As a Liverpool fan I was fortunate enough to watch many great players wearing the red shirt of my beloved team. But if ever a player lived up to his surname, then George Best was that man.

Nice one.

'In 1961, Manchester United scout Bob Bishop sent a telegram to the club's manager Matt Busby with the simple sentence: "I think I've found you a genius." Best had been rejected by local club Glentoran for being too slightly-built, but after a successful trial, United signed him on.
The rest, as they so often say, is history.'

Not wanting to sound dismissive, but honestly there are some far more impressive feats in Best's career than scoring 6 against a mid-table Fourth (!!) Division team...

The pure elation when he scored some of those earlier goals is fantastic to see. Hadn't seen at least 1/3 of those goals, great stuff.

Great stuff!

Interesting how everyone get so excited about shirt numbers these days, especially the legendary No. 7, I saw him there playing in 7, 8, 10 & 11 and all the the same season.
It's a modern thing. Numbers didn't mean all that much back then. People associate Law with the number 10, but he wore the number 8 just as often. Great to see that video though as I was at many of those games, but I have really fond memories of being in the Streford End the night he scored the winner against Chelsea in the League Cup. Pity they didn't show Bobby's 1st half rocket shot for our 1st goal though. Bestie actually scored a goal that was every bit as good against Palace in the next round but I haven't seen that on video yet.

Looking again, I'm reminded of the quality of players we had then. Herd played some lovely football and Johnny Aston, reviled by some at the time, was a damned good orthodox winger.

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
I had that picture on my wall as a kid

I remember the Northampton game as well, mostly because the day before was the first time I actually managed to say a complete sentence to Best. Nothing very profound, just that I was glad he was back (he'd been suspended) and I was looking forward to seeing him play. To my eternal pleasure, he actually said a complete sentence in reply. "I'm glad I'm back - I've missed it as well." :D

Magical player. RIP, George and thanks for the memories.

Striking that the help he got couldn't save him.

"Don't Die Like Me"

I remember him commentating for ITV at the Manchester United vs World XI and saying he would have played but he was ill.

RIP my dads hero.

There's a great story, but I can't remember who it's told by. George was coming towards the end and NI had a game against Holland. He vowed before the game to meg Cruyff. He walked down the tunnel towards the pitch, collected a flower from a fan. Pretty much the first thing he did was get the ball and duly put it through Cruyffs legs.

He is the greatest ever, I don't care how many stats Messi breaks, Bestie played the game with an imagery and pathos that no other has reached.

Used to live round the corner from me in his later years and would have seen him in the local and in the shop for his groceries and stuff. Had time for everyone and was only too happy to have a yarn with whoever talked to him. Lovely bloke and obviously an imense player.

RIP George, the epitome of a legend.

That's quite a strange thing for them to do, but wonderfully touching. Nice one Roma fans. Maybe try to not stab us next time we play you away.

I think it's safe to assume that the fans that thought of that gesture aren't the same ones that go around stabbing people.

It was tongue in cheek. It's a nice gesture from a club who have no links as far as I know to Best. It's a nice thing, which I pointed out.

It was literally the first thing he did.

He collected the ball and being that he and Cruyff were on opposite wings, ran across the width of the pitch to nutmeg him.

Legend.

The poster mentioned this was his favourite memory as a 12 year old kid. Sure there are more impressive feats but this was a personal memory that left an impact.

A memory: late on in a game at the Dell he is running at 2 Soton defenders right in front of him. He drops the left shoulder and body swerves left, and the defender on that side moves wide to follow the shoulder. He drops the right shoulder and body swerves right, and the defender on that side moves wide to follow the shoulder. All this happens at great speed and suddenly there is a gaping space in front of him which he runs through. Pure George.

Genius. He used to bait defenders all the time. One of his favourite targets was Terry Yorath, though I remember him ripping Sheffield Wednesday apart at OT. Attacking the Stretford End, Bestie was challenged by two Wednesday defenders. He slowed down and motioned for them to come and get the ball, which they couldn't do.

This makes for some obscene viewing.
I am unfortunately too young to have seen any of George Best, My Grandad apparently used to go on that he was the greatest player he's ever seen.

From that video I can see why, there are very few players that look like they're on another level to the players around them. He looked like one of them.

Thank you for posting that video.
