Would you take 2nd next year if offered now?

This is a question to our fans and opposition.
My guess:

City/ Chelsea - hell yes would be happy for us to take 2nd leaving 1st place free
Liverpool/ Arsenal/ Tottenham/ Everton - No chance, they would hope us to have another bad season and 2nd could take one of their top 4 places

Us - divided, do you like to gamble or not? 2nd would be a great turnaround on a terrible year and would mean we were back in the Champions League having fought off a likely strengthened Liverpool, a typically top 4 Arsenal, the unlikely top 4 anyway Tottenham and Everton, but with another years experience and a new manager. Lets be honest City and Chelsea are taking 2 of the top 4 spots regardless!

Personally I'd not accept it. Similar to what happened with Liverpool we should have a clearer schedule and thus be primed for competing for the title. I don't think any team appears capable of pulling together sufficient consistency to be outright winners, thus giving us a great chance. The risk is that with two spots basically guaranteed to Chelsea and City that leaves 2 spots. Arsenal always find a way and Liverpool are at their strongest.

The risk is we could easily slip to 5th if we don't improve substantially on this season and find some consistency. If we do however 1st place could be there for the taking.

My answer to this question is based on us making some decent signings this summer. In absence of at least one top class central defender, and maybe one central midfielder I just can't see it. We probably have enough talent in midfield and the wings that improved performance with one or two players could be enough to take us to the next level. It's a stretch to rely on Evra, but well we've done it plenty before and I'm not sure his level has dropped that much since we won the title.

On the wings for instance we have Januzaj and Zaha, or Nani and Valencia, or make shift Welbeck/ Mata/ Kagawa or Young personally lowest on my potential list. It shouldn't be too much to expect just 2 of these to maintain some form over the season, even if we have struggled for too long.

In midfield we would need Fellani to up his form, Kagawa to be used in the right position more regular, or Cleverley to substantially increase his ability (unlikely), Carrick would need to show the maturity that Giggs has managed for years. In reality we maybe need that extra piece in the puzzle to ensure we have the necessary quality. A seriously solid defensive midfielder is probably what is required to ensure we can exploit the creativity and potential of some of our other players.

Second and a cup would be a very good season. Depends what we spend this summer though.

Yeah, automatic Champions League qualification and a good cup run is my wish for next season.

Do you think Van Gaal would take 2nd?

There is no reason if we sign the right players and with a quality manager why we can't challenge for the league and win at least one trophy. With the squad we've got we should be aiming for that and I'd like us to go for both domestic cups. No Europe, no distractions, no excuses.

Not sure where you all are coming from. United is not renowned for being second (Sir Bobby's words). In a competition which we always boss around, anything less than 1st is a failure. Granted, we had a bad bad season and anything above 7th is an improvement. But 2nd? It would be too heartbreaking to be so close yet so far.... I don't think there is a lot of difference between 2nd and 4th to be honest. So if you offer me 2nd now, I will not take it, and would prefer to go for the win at least we tried.

I don't think it's a difficult choice at all, honestly. If we miss out on the CL again, we could be looking at a major downfall. Of course I'd take it.

This. Without Europe and with Van Gaal we will go for the title.

Where the goals come from.
Not for me. I'm confident (maybe naively so) that we can get back into the top 4 next season, and I don't really give much of a shit between 2nd and 4th.

I don't think we're likely to win it, but I wouldn't want to rule out the possibility just to secure a Champions League place.

Depends on the circumstances.

2nd after trying to chase the top team all season = fine by me.
2nd after doing a Liverpool = no thanks, I'd rather finish 3rd in Chelsea boredom fashion.

I don't get it! How come a United fan would image we will miss out on CL! Oh sorry I forgot the Moyes effect..... But he's gone, and United will be fine again. Take it from me. :)

Never take 2nd without trying for 1st. We are United.

Too early to accept finishing 2nd. We need to aim for the title, if we miss out then 2nd place would be a consolation.

Goes without saying. It will be a massive improvement if we do but I am half expecting it. The year after next is when I want us to be winning the thing again.

I dunno how to answer these questions, at this moment I will take 2nd without a doubt. But then coming second would be disappointing no matter what.

Louis van Gaal's record:

1997 - joined Barcelona, won La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup in first season
2009 - joined Bayern Munich, won Bundesliga and DFB Cup in first season
2014 - joined Man United, won Premier League and FA Cup in first season :D

Alright, that's wishful thinking on my part but we have to dream so right now I'd say no to second.

Absolutely not WTF is this serious?
THIS
We are United, we do what we want. We want the title and we want it bad. We want to make City, Liverpool and Chelsea cry. Second to any of them, particularly Liverpool is unacceptable.

We all should be looking forward to a new season. LvG is no Moyes and I can see he has a bit of Fergie's temperament so I feel positive.

Anywhere in the top four and a strong cup run would be great. We don't need to be chasing the title till the season after.

Absolutely. I think people screaming for us to finish champions should take a look at our squad and re asses just how much rebuilding work it's going to need. Chances are we'll implement a new style of play as well. I always want us to win but seeing how awful we were this season I'd be pretty satisfied with second at this moment in time. That would of course change if we started the campaign flying.

What? No. What's the point? Its not going to matter much if we finish 2nd or 4th so may as we go for 1st.

We'll finish in the top four and it doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me whether we finish 2nd or 4th. It'll mean we've won more points but getting more points isn't something that I crave as a football fan. Not winning the title will ultimately still feel like a disappointment no matter where we finish so if you have to accept that that's not a possibility then I care more about watching good football than finishing higher in the table.

With the current set of players, hell yeah!

BUT and it is a big but, if we get the players to sort out our issues and they all gel together this summer, then - who knows?

Van Gaal + a good midfield + good football + the players that won the league last year could mean anything is possible...

No chance.

If we were to sign a CB, LB and two CM's, we would be right up there for the title. Our attacking force is excellent and we have other players while not being outstanding, will thrive next to good players again. The likes of Januzaj, De Gea, Jones, Smalling & Welbeck should only get better, especially Januzaj who has great potential.

The system we played this season did not get the best out of our players and our defence was terrible. With a commanding CB and two CM's, we would look a much more dominant outfit. It is really down to who we sign.

If there's been significant investment and quality is in, I'd like to think we could have a tilt at the big one.
