Been appointed ahead of Fletcher says LvG. Wouldn't be surprised to see Fletcher move on in January.

Would anyone want Fletch? I reckon he may just retire at the end of the season.

Bit of a strange move midway through the season.

You can tell LVG absolutely loves Carrick though.

Good move, no point having a vice-captain that never plays.

Fletcher only got vice-captain due to Carrick's injury.

Nah Fletcher will stay, we can't banter off sides with our piss poor 3-5-2 until Fletch comes on for the last 10, it's just not complete without it.

110% the right decision. Doesn't make it any less of a shame for Fletcher though.

Probably the correct thing to do but it does seem a bit mean to take it away from Fletcher part way through the season.

I think Fletch will see out the season with us. Hope he gets the right club when he moves on.

Fletch is still the better vice captain for me if playing(which is a huge if) Carrick has never struck me as vocal enough nor does he have the kind of game to galvanize others. Still he's a good steady pro and a good footballer so can't complain really.

Very surprised to hear him change the vice-captain mid-season, but I always felt Fletcher's days were numbered in spite of that title. Unfortunately he simply isn't good enough, even as a squad player, as we are a club striving to reach the summit in world football once again.

He's a great player to have in the squad until the end of the season for morale and the positive influence he can have helping young players, but January or the summer at the latest is the ideal time for him to move on.

Carrick on the other hand is a great appointment. One of the few players in the squad who can provide a calming influence on the team within games and even at his age, he can potentially play at a very high level for another few years, especially if he is offered the protection and assurance in midfield. LVG is quite obviously a huge admirer also.

Great move, Carrick absolutely deserves it. A bit strange to do it midway through the season though, but not a big deal anyway.

He's still vice-captain. Just second choice vice-captain. It's odd as feck.

Man United: Louis van Gaal makes Michael Carrick vice-captain
By Simon StoneBBC Sport
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain.

Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August.

Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run.

"I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three."

Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp.

"He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman.

"He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch."

Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend.

It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent.

"Now we don't have Daley Blind, when I choose Carrick in defence, I miss him in midfield."

In addition to long-term injuries Blind, Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling, Van Gaal will also be without Marouane Fellaini at Villa Park because of illness, while defender Marcos Rojo is ruled out by a thigh strain.

I agree but after the last few years, I'm kind of glad that our manager is capable of being ruthless (in the football sense).

This saddens me, even though it's obviously a good decision :(

LVG wll keep promoting players in front of him until he eventually makes Ando the 423rd vice captain and Fletch throws himself in front of a train.

It makes absolute sense. Carrick is the most educated British player and was just a matter of time that he was given a senior role when fit. Glad to see Louis recognises and appreciates one of English footballs most underrated players in history.

Oh and hope that Fletch is ok and that this is not an indirect sign of a set back with his condition. He'll be given a role at United for life you'd imagine if he chooses to take it.

Fletch. :(

Still, it makes sense really given how low Fletcher is in the pecking order and the high probability that he'll be leaving sooner rather than later.

The only reason Fletch got the vice captaincy in the first place was because hes a favourite in the dressing room. As much as I love him he'll never get more than sub appearances unless most of our midfield is injured, hes even behind Fellaini and Rooney in the pecking order.

The obvious choice really, of course it's a shame for DF but Carricks a huge presence on the pitch, easily our most intelligent and composed player, perfect captain material really. Would see him take up the full captaincy to be honest.

It's a shame Fletch never made it back all the way. He did everything humanly possible, but the mountain was just too high..

Bit strange to make Fletch vice captain in the first place when he was only ever going to be restricted to cameos and brief appearances. Even stranger to then take it off him half way through the season. It's correct that Carrick is VC, but there's probably more to it than LVG just wanted to change it.

Yep. Still, maybe he'll be able to have a good few years at a lower club? He's only thirty after all and I could see him being an important player for other clubs given his leadership qualities.....

Innit.

If he decides playing isn't his future and coaching is, I hope he can stick around. He may know sod all about tactics but he could certainly offer words of wisdom elsewhere.

Anyway... Carrick seems as good a choice as there is. Not that it is a role that means much.

In preseason he appeared a fair bit and did okay, since the start of the season he's been poor and as a result he barely appeared.
