Perfect opportunity to prove the 3-5-2 can work.
Pretty much how I see this panning out, LVG seems like the sort of bloke who wants to prove he knows better and would most likely double down his hubris than change for the better. It may end up costing us top 4.

If he does that it will cost him his job as well. The board will want Top 4 nothing else. If he is on an ego trip he will be in real trouble.

Can we just go basic fergie and cut out any complications:
    DDG
    Rafa Smalling Rojo Shaw
Di maria Carrick(sub blind after 60 mins) Herrera Januzaj
    Rooney Falcao
    Basic 3 points!

Would be great to see it, but how can you leave out Valencia who is doing great job this season, even if I love Januzaj, the combo Rafalencia + Shamaria can be good I think.

i'm not trying to be over the top here, but 90% of the lineups in this thread (including the one I quoted) are good enough to hammer QPR. common theme? NO feckING 3-5-2.

All top managers have a huge ego - they hate to admit they are wrong. LVG is stubbon and will persist with his system of 352.
If he doesnt make top 4, like you said, he will be sacked.
But, I think top 4 will be easy for us this year. Next year is the title year and that is what I am thinking about.
We can't be scoring 2 points from 3 games, next year. Chelsea and Man City will open up too big a gap on us.

I'm going to quote myself, from a previous thread.

    Hehehe. You dont like 352?
Well, get used to it. This is now our formation of choice and will be are default formation for the next few years.

don't get too smug. absolutely nobody knows what the next few years will hold, even gary neville said a year ago that david moyes will be at united for the next three or four years no matter what.

so if neville didn't know what he was talking about, you probably don't either.

we're no longer even scraping results with this formation, so not only are we playing shit football, we're dropping points. that is not tenable.

Surprised to not to see Fellaini in many lineups now that he's fit. We've missed him badly IMO.

Comfortable win. Can't see the boss dropping Mata, despite the 3 misses in the last game. I'm hopeful that we wont see the 3-5-2 although we can never rule it out. Herrera, Valencia and Januzaj perhaps to be introduced if we find ourselves struggling to attack with enough pace. I'm going to go for an optimistic 3-0 but would be happy with 3 points regardless of the scoreline. The most important thing is to bounce back from the result against Southampton.

Blasphemous of people to select Rooney as a forward.. He will obviously play in midfield and we will play with Di Maria and Fellaini as forwards in a 3-5-2 formation :)

Perfect formation, team selection brilliant except i'd swap Carrick for Herrera because Carrick hasnt got the legs to support the defense and attack. Herrera or Felliani are closest united have of a box-to-box type of player. But i'd pick Herrera though for his passing and link-up with other players. other than that perfect, alot goals can come by putting that team out, unfortunatly i got feeling he'll keep playing 3 at the back

The loss against Southampton really knocked my confidence back.
I predicted a 2-1 victory for us few days ago but im not so sure anymore. If LVG feck around like last match,i think we will struggle. And if we play 352 i think we will lose the match.

We have the same points tally as Moyes, fewer shots on target this season then we had at the same time last season under Moyes. Our plan B is pushing Fellaini up top and hoof balls to him.
    Struggle to see the philosophy.

Im going for a 1-1 draw

For some reason, Neville and Moyes assumed that Man Utd could accept poor performances, with no sackings.
In 2014 this was never going to be viable.

With regards to LVG, he is a stubborn man.
He got fired for being stubborn, at Barca.
he got fired for being stubborn, at Bayern.
Unless he has changed his ways - possible, but unlikely - he will stick to his guns and make his preferred formation (352) work.

If at any stage he was going to have 4 at the back, it was against Southampton - we had plenty of defenders available, many were on the bench.
Southampton was the first game this season, he could pick his preferred players, formation, tactic, etc. And he chose 352, with Di Maria up front and no Falcao. That speaks volumes.

I do agree though, this is all conjecture, based on analysis and LVG could surprise us all.
    Only time will tell.

He is stubborn, but hes never been stubborn about formation. I dont think that they're that important to him, compared to that philosophy stuff. Certainly at Bayern he changed formation several times (including ditching his preferred 4-3-3 when it wasnt working) until he got to one that did work.

The players really need to give themselves a kick up the arse and win this. It'd be our 4th league game in a row without one of we lose/draw this. Pretty fecking awful.

I feel we could get away with it, the refs haven't been great this year and we're due a decision, they do say these things even out over the course of the season. I'll take one now, take the hit later.

Wonder if he would drop RVP for Rooney and have Carrick next to Blind. It would almost be a 424 with Herrera and Di Maria freedom to set up the front two.

    But then again, not likely.

Rooney to drop a bit deeper making Falcao the main striker in an around the 16, getting supply from Rooney, Mata, Di Maria, Blind, Shaw and Valencia if we can't create chances than and outscore them I just don't know anymore. Play good pressing attacking football from the go and once we have a comfortable lead we can bring in players like Fellaini and Herrera and Jones in defence to close the game down.

I'd take that. I was pretty excited when i saw the lineup for the Southampton game, assumed it was a flat back 4 with Carrick and Blind holding. Was pretty annoyed when i saw them line up with a back 3.

If we have to play 3-5-2 i would play this:
    -----------------DeGea-------------
    ---------Jones-Smalling-Rojo------
    Valencia-------Carrick-------Blind--
    --------Herrera-------DiMaria-----
    ---------Falcao--------Rooney------

Maximum creativity in a defensive system. Blind has shown he can create chances out of nothing from LWB at the WC and in the end of the Southampton game.
Fellaini instead of Herrera and Wilson instead of Falcao wouldn't be the end of the World.

Premier League refereeing standards is not at it's best at moment , we could go 1/2 the match unnoticed, by then too late, Welbeck will be on first train back to London

If we line up 3-5-2 I'm going to avoid this place for at least a week regardless of result. Even if we win 6-0 with a great performance people will be saying "it doesn't prove anything". Which is right, it doesn't, but it'll still be fecking boring reading it.

We could win the league 20 years in a row and people would still be going "3-5-2 again? FFS" in these threads.

The only plus side is Harry might play 3-5-2 aswell, which if that's the case we should be stronger in the midfield/attack.

Downside is that lump Zamora will probably give anybody but Smalling a hard game, and Austin will no doubt have a worldie against us like that twat Vardy.
