Sad news. She had a short battle with cancer. RIP. Rio must be heartbroken and you have to feel bad for the children.
Ms Ellison, 34, who married Ferdinand in 2009, had breast cancer.

She leaves behind three children, Lorenz, nine, Tate, six, and four-year-old Tia.

QPR defender Rio Ferdinand has today (Saturday 2nd May 2015) released the following statement:

'My soul mate slipped away last night. Rebecca, my wonderful wife, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

She was a fantastic loving mother to our three beautiful children. She will be missed as a wife, sister, aunt, daughter and granddaughter. She will live on in our memory, as a guide and inspiration.

Myself, my parents Janice and Julian, along with Rebecca's parents Lesley and Stephen, would like to thank our families, friends and my club colleagues who have rallied around in these desperate days, weeks and months.
I would also like to express my gratitude for the dedication and expertise of the staff led by Professors Johnstone and Clarke at the Royal Marsden. Their valiant efforts to prolong Rebecca's all-too-short life will not be forgotten.

Our grief, as a family, is total. We would appreciate being allowed to mourn privately.'

The thoughts of everyone at Queens Park Rangers Football Club are with Rio and his family at this immensely difficult time.

Sad sad desperate news. I hate that disease so much. Cannot believe after all this time after all the money spent we haven't found a cure. Also explains why he's played so little for QPR this year. The children also. RIP.:(

This is utterly utterly terrible news. I love Big Rio!. So sad. RIP. What an awful day. We share his grief for him being he was an unbelievable servant to this club.

Was just reading his autobiography and he spoke very lovingly of her. Very sad. Losing your wife must be the most agonising pain.

It's odd that he has been tweeting and doing media as normal right up to yesterday. Never had a clue his wife was on her deathbed
