F365 :

Whatever the frustrations with Van Gaal’s style, the manager is not one to pick on reputation. Eighteen-year-old Cameron Borthwick-Jackson came on to make his United debut with 15 minutes remaining. It marked the first time a PG Wodehouse character has played in the Premier League.

Glorious!

So...that happened.

Did alright. Nothing lossed, a little gained I suppose.

Still, it was only a couple of months ago we were seriously discussing the potential end of the academy legacy under LVG...

Yet another case to file under "fans are reactionary idiots" then. This season looks like it's gonna be a bumper year.

Not the way West Brom were playing
A mistimed tackle in the box (such as Blackett last season). A handball (such as Martial a few weeks ago).

Young players commit such mistakes.

Props to the boy for a tidy debut appearance, but it was still somewhat of a reckless substitution decision by LvG.
Considering Rojo was on a yellow, it wasn't a bad substitution. Just shows he trusts the lad

The moment I saw him being subsituted for Rojo I really was shitting bricks more than him. Considering Ssennagon was getting some good runs past Rojo and was looking likely outlet for WBA, it was quite a ballsy move by LVG. But must be a real confidence booster for the lad and for the rest of the academy. I know too soon to say but will he be another one of the players wherein in 15-20 years down the line we will say, "LVG was the one that gave him his debut"!

But the worst that could happen is dropping three points whilst with every debutant there is a potential twenty year servant who goes on to become a club legend or just a squad player who could save us millions.

Have you seen this place after we get a draw? You'll think the world was ending by the way some people here over react.

Nice to see him get the chance to come on. I thought he was just on the bench to make up the defensive numbers like Tuanzebe last week. It's almost laughable people questioning van Gaal's record with youth, since he's taken over there's been debuts for Blackett, Lingard, McNair, Thorpe, James, Pereira, Janko and now Borthwick-Jackson.

It's a fair bit more complex than that. One could easily flip your argument; if you throw a youngster in at the deep end and he isn't ready for it, you risk losing 20 years of service. E.g John Curtis. Not to mention, two or three points could very well be the difference between the Premiership trophy and a dick in your hand come May.

Hardly noticed him when he got subbed on since BFS and Lingard helped him a lot, but good to see LvG put his trust in another youngster.

Jesus the man can't win with some supporters

You're missing the point.

It worked out well, but it was a risk -- swapping out a full international defender for a teenage newbie -- that Van Gaal didn't need to take when the outcome of the match was still in doubt and West Brom had begun testing us. Young for Jones made perfect sense, but Rojo was putting on a solid performance and showed no signs of falling apart. That's all.

You take risks for the rewards, who knows what might happen further down the line? If Rojo and Blind get at some point injured that 15 minutes might be all that stops Borthwick crapping his pants when he has to actually start a match and ends up losing us the game.

But Rojo was on a yellow and can be very rash going into challenges. Bringing on a youth player shows he has faith in them, even when the game is still in the balance. That decision will have done wonders for CBJ confidence.

Rojo was still playing well but was definitely in danger of a second yellow, he was going into challenges a little rashly for a man on a caution. It was a perfectly sensible decision.
