The end of Rooney

Agree with people who say Rooney will be even more famous in 20 years than now.

I've travelled around 8 Asian countries and Australia this last 12 months, and everywhere I go I say I'm from Manchester (easier than explaining where Preston is!) and instantly they go "ahhh Manchesterrrrr. Wanney Wooney!"

They see him as the best player in the world.

They have marketing to thank for that. Anyone who thinks Rooney is anywhere near the best in the world has never actually watched football or knows nothing about it.

True, but my point still stands, he's barely played this season, he's been none existent for about 2 years now, he could well have retired, yet he's still thought of as one of the top 3 players in the world.

It's the hype that has been built around and for him. He's a messiah figure for United to everyone except the majority of our own fans who actually watch our games. It's the same for England. He's seen as their best player but really, and quite clearly, he isn't. If United and England choose to continue entrenching themselves in the idea that the team has to be built around him, both are fecked. Royally. '

Ronaldo, Messi, Aguero, Iniesta, Neymar, Suarez. These are "top 3 in the world" players.

He was once among the very best in the world. Twice 5th and once 8th in the Ballon D'Or.

Now he is nowhere near the best in the world but I still think he is an important player for us.

The problem is his importance has been way overstated by LVG and Moyes who gave him that huge ass contract. He should be phased out in favour of Martial + another senior striker brought in. I'd take Morata.

I agree with everything you said. What I meant is he is our most high profile player still. This is how Ed would see it as he is in the marketing business and having a figure head like Rooney sells especially Asia and Middle East. We could definately replace him with better players and you are right with Martial and the Rasher, they are the future. But the reality is selling a product in Asia doesn't do well with black people, see them practical eliminate that dude Boyega from the Star Wars poster, the main character for feck sake.

It's always the sign of a great club when they care enough to keep an underperforming overpaid player because he appeals to their racist fans. Things like this are why I love football and support this club.

You poser! :P

Preston is closer to Lancaster than manchester!

nah, 249 v 244 at the mo.

Was interested to see Law was on 237 from way less than games than Rooney, let alone Charlton.
But possibly best of all, Ruud, 150 in 219! Wow.

Ruud was fantastic!

Rooney's 2:1 ratio is also very impressive, especially if we consider that he has often played on the left or in the middle.

They are not.

But proceed otherwise.

It's a cruel hypocritical reality we live in unfortunately. I personally couldnt give a shite about Asia. They usually support what ever club their favorite player players for anyway.

This happened???

Talk about sweeping generalisation and this poster would be the expert.

I find this is a problem we had with Giggs and Scholes too. When a player stays a long time it's hard to let them go and move on. A lot of times years ago we relied on him to play well, without him we looked rubbish. Now I couldn't give a care in the world if he starts, I am actually in the camp of happy he isn't.

As others have mentioned though, commercially he is still a strong earner for the club. I can see why they don't want to kick him out straight away, but he definitely needs to be eased out and replaced by more effective players.

Apart from his 40 yard Gerrard style hollywood balls he offers nothing a lesser younger known player could.

Outrage as Rooney revealed to be Richest Footballer in the Universe

Wayne Rooney tops the 2016 Sunday Times Rich List for young sportsmen in Britain which is published this weekend.

The 30-year-old England and Manchester United captain has amassed an £82million fortune which makes him the richest sportsman aged 30 or under, a rise of £10m from last year.

Rooney's wealth comes from a reported £300,000-a-week contract at United, which makes him the highest-paid player in the Barclays Premier League, as well as endorsements with global brands Nike, Samsung and Wotsits.

Reality is he has been on a steady decline for the past five years or so. If he wasn't the captain or had such a great past, he would have been dropped already. He never was a great player in the sense that he plays a calm controlled game and relied more so on explosiveness and aggression.

If his legs have gone as a result of playing since he was 16, injuries, poor lifestyle or whatever, he no longer deserves a place in the starting 11.

His passing, creativity, decision making and shooting are all now questionable and those characteristics are normally an accepted norm for a top level attacking player never mind the captain of Manchester United..

That's unfair. He was a great player. Possibly the best youngster Britain has produced since Giggs and Gascoigne.

The Rooney hype was real until the 2006 World Cup. As soon as he came back that season, I remember many fans thought he was getting overshadowed by Ronaldo massively and wasn't the same as he'd been in 05/06.

Since then, he's changed his game to became a better number 9, and he had one great season as a #10 behind Hernandez in 2010/2011, but the original Rooney that would go on driving runs and have ferocious shots from outside the box started dying the day he broke his metatarsal against Chelsea

The hype was justified. He was nailed on as the next big thing.

If you're comparing any player except Messi against Ronaldo you're gonna be disappointed.

Overall he has had a fantastic career.

huh?!! What fecking muppet thinks that? lol

He'd struggle to make the top 30 in the world right now. Don't even think he's in the top 3 at United anymore.

He had a good game yesterday though, have to admit that. Due's where there owed and all that.

Read back the conversation I was talking about south East Asian countries and their obsession with Rooney

So do you live in SE Asia or just pulling that out your ass

I do and theres no way its true. Maybe a couple of years ago, and hes still probably the second or third most marketable face after Ronaldo and Messi, but Asia's obsession has moved on to the Barcelona front three.

I do too and that's completely untrue. Agree with the Barca front three part. Still, lots of people are becoming a lot less taken up by marketing especially in countries like Singapore, Australia and Malaysia. Fans there are actually quite cynical about Rooney now and tend not to overwhelmingly support Barca or Real.

to be fair to him he did well in the last 2 matches playing in a midfield role, i can see him playing in midfield in a 4-3-3 for us next season. not as an automatic starter anymore but that's the only role i can think of for him for united.

no more upfront, he doesn't have the pace or movement to be a front man anymore.

At 300k a week, we should not be finding ways to try to fit him into a team. He's taking up a precious spot in the starting 11, and he needs to justify it. For that kind of wage, we should be fielding a world class midfielder.
