Mourinho needs to build a team and get the players on side. By signing Carrick for another year gives good stability and a player that everyone at the club respects. If stories are true, Carrick is a very good influence behind the scenes, especially with the young lads. Even if he doesn't play much next season we need people like him involved in the squad.

Carrick staying is welcome news. He still has a lot to contribute and Mou, unlike certain people here, recognises this.

I read it, he should have put him on the coaching staff then.
Good idea , and we can stop the discussion of retaining Giggs as kind of United legacy or upkeeping traditional values ......one stone two birds .

Bet if you offered Michael a job on the coaching staff he would jump at it. He doesn't come across as the sniffy, job not good enough for me type.

Meh not exactly overjoyed at this news

Some fans have such short memories he was a liability at times last year because his legs are gone and he's way off the pace

Should've been moved on

Happy with him staying, provided our midfield is not going to be built around him this season.

A little surprised. Mourinho usually likes his midfielders to be extremely athletic. Not that I'm complaining.

Oh crap! Oh well, here's hoping he's just a bench warmer next season.

Carrick deserves to retire at the club, if that's what he wants to do. As long as he's happy to accept whatever role the manager has for him, he's earned that right. Carrick should be considered as one of best central midfielders of the premier league era, consistently quality for 10+ years and won a lot of titles along the way. He has been a model professional. Should see out this year and then move onto some kind of coaching role in the club.
This. 100%

If he's still starting every week as he was this season then we'll be in trouble again.

If he's used more sparingly and in games where we'll have a bit more time on the ball then he'll do fine. If the call was either him or Schweinsteiger as our veteran midfielder than I'd rather keep Carrick.

Do you think Schweinsteiger is a gonner then?

Good move. People get too hung up on age. We need players with experience - able to steady the ship - and used to winning with fresh young talent around them. Arguably he has been one of our most consistent players for the last couple of years bar Dave of course.

What have we got to lose other than his wages - he isnt costing us anything. Good pro and probably knows he wont start every game and will be good with in the squad.

I doubt anyone would take him on the wages he's on.

In the region of £220k/week with 2 years left on his contract. Maybe he'd get that in China, but would he want to go?

I've been on his case this season but he can still offer a lot, we don't have an array of vastly experienced players coming up behind him so he can be useful for another year.

Good news. He's one of my favorite United players, a great servant of the club and i believe he deserves to retire on a high note, another PL title possibly.

I don't believe age plays any particular role in a Mourinho side. If you are good enough, then you're old enough. The only question is if he will be able to stay fit for the most part of the season. Plus Mourinho always likes to have experienced players who are a good influence for the others in the dressing room.

I don't think he'll be a first choice for the starting xi next season and that we'll sign a new holding midfielder. In any case, even at 35, he's still a quality option to have in the squad, either as a stopgap during an injury crisis or as a sub who'll help the team control the tempo and see out games.

You serious?? No wonder we were so shite last season. Deary me!
Yes. If I was picking a team tomorrow from our squad, Carrick would be the first CM I'd choose. Who would you have?

i like carrick, but i don't understand the point in having both him and bastian. it should be one or the other, not both, IMO.

I'm pleased, always liked Carrick and think he'd be useful to have around the club even if we get another midfielder and he spends more time on the bench.

Ugh, pointless.
Hes better than schweinsteiger. Comfortably.

We can't replace the entire team

His games will be managed.

His experience in general and of the club is invaluable for newer and younger players.

Stop being a miserable git.

The squad is thin. I really thought he is a goner. Yet, I am quite happy as I thought he is our next best CM post Scholes era. Can see Mou will use him sparingly to transfer the knowledge and experience.

Agree. Carrick all day for me. Get rid of the useless german. Awful last season.

This experience stuff is a crutch to keep old has-beens around, he's not a leader and never was. His legs have gone and he was practically a statue last season, we shouldn't be clogging up the squad with the likes of him and Schweinsteiger.

Well seeing as Blind has some stiff competition at the back now I would use any of Blind, Fosu-Mensah and Rooney (only because I know he won't be dropped). Carrick, Schnieders (if we must keep him also) and Bastian would be the last 20-min guys if required...till we get decent replacements. We just need a more skillful and pacy midfield without the liability factor.

Good news imo.

Sir Alex was masterful in choosing which games the older guys would play and perform well (like Giggs against Real). If Mourinho is able to do the same, we can get 20-25 pretty solid games from Carrick next season I hope.

Guess I'm the only one who was hoping the FA Cup win would be his send off... Blah.

Makes sense for Mourinho to keep a few experienced United players in the squad though I guess. For me I'd rather we kept Schweinsteiger for another season instead. But I know his outrageous wages will probably mean he's gonna be shafted. Still don't think Carrick should be our first choice CM next season.

Pretty sure this was the idea a year ago when we brought in the Schmidfield

Carrick went on to be our best performing midfielder last season and we relied on him in the end

Yeah probably, that shouldn´t happen again. I dont think Carrick can play 45 games if we want to improve as a team and be a title contender.

I´m not sure I remember exactly, but Carrick was behind Schneiderlin/Schweini until somewhere around the Arsenal-debacle last fall right?
