Very good article. Summary:
  • Emilio Alvarez oversaw De Gea's breakthrough at Atletico
  • Alvarez said De Gea was the best of the GKs at the time despite being just 18
  • By end of the season De Gea was first-choice goalkeeper of a Europa League winning side
  • Alvarez close friend of Mendes and likely both Mendes and De Gea recommended him
  • Recruitment of Alvarez "clearest sign" that De Gea sees his long term future at United and holds aspirations of being captain
  • At Atleti Alvarez allowed De Gea's father (a former GK) to observe training
  • Alvarez in 2014: 'David's dad, Jose, is his best coach. Let's go into a dream-world for a second, where I am the coach at United. My first decision? Let De Gea's father into the training. Why not?'

  • Alvarez nurtured DDG catlike reflexes by making him wear a blind-fold in shooting practice in training at Atleti. Smart Mourinho move
  • DDG family so close to Alvarez they invited him for dinner with girlfriend Edurne in early days of relationship because they valued his opinion

Letting his father in there seems a bad idea though, considering...

Whilst I am pleased for De Gea in that he will be able to work with a coach with whom he is comfortable, I'm only cautiously optimistic about noticeable improvement. Alvarez did a fantastic job grooming him into an exceptionally talented young keeper, and his involvement with Steele and Hoek took him several levels beyond and made him one of the most talented keepers of his generation. It would be cool if he could continue to evolve with another coach giving him polish to another side of his game (organisation, sweeping etc.).

How does that even work?

 Nabbed that for the twitter, thanks
It's great, I went for the matrix. Should have gone for full blown Jedi!

Is that even him above? Look at the tan on those legs! He's a pasty Llama now that he's been in England for so long.

Made my day reading that DDG wants to be United captain in the future. He'd be perfect!

I wasn't sure about another change to begin with but reading his origins it looks like a great choice.

Ideally a GK would have the one coach but I guess over the last six years having the number of coaches he has had with different methods probably helps to some extent, with Alvarez training his reflexes and Steele and Wood helping him improve aerially etc.

What Sikvino Louro do here with us? Was not he the GK coach for Mourinho former teams?

Wikipedia has Louro as the coach and Alvarez as the assistant, so they'll probably just be working together.

We should just let him hire his own GK coach. Pretty sure Neuer has one.

This was my worry at first, will it hamper his development. But the fact he continues to excel regardless of who's coaching makes me very confident.

Read somewhere that Silvino is involved in tactical planning, and dead ball planning.

Found that DDG has the tendency to use his legs rather than hands to block shots. Can this part be improved some more?

The danger is that we will start to develop cliques within United. Between nationalities and staff/player groupings.

Pretty sure this happens regardless in all types of work environments, but especially those with non-homogenous ethnicities and backgrounds. Cliques exist everywhere. Could give a shite really as long as there's mutual respect and everyone's working towards a common goal. Gotta imagine the Spanish contingent of DDG, Mata and Herrera are especially close.

The best part about this hiring is that Mourinho values De Gea and is trying his utmost to keep him happy. Always thought it was odd how LVG was never effusive in his praise for him, and in fact would downplay his contributions.

And DDG continues to excel. Don't know if if says more about Dave or the coaches, but who cares. It seems like Dave is staying and will continue to be goalkeeper 1A in the world.
Yup, at this point in his career I'm not sure how important a goalkeeper coach would be for his continued success and development. If the club hired his best mate to keep him happy and to stay in Manchester, I'd be all for it.

You've got De Gea's training programme confused with Simon Mignolet's there, mate.

So Silvino would involve in helping De Gea with deal with aerial and commanding the box?

From what I have read, it is more about how our outfield players can score in dead ball situations.

Also apparently any striker worth their salt can score from the gap between his legs. That definitely needs to be sorted.
(according to Bluemoon anyways)

Agreed with both of these points.

Regarding the first, as you say this happens in every work environment. What's important is for there to be a strong team spirit - you don't have to be mates with everyone you work with, but you need to respect their work and trust they know what they're doing.

For the second point, maybe I'm cynical but I truly believe LVG didn't praise him as much because if you're goalkeeper is your key player, it clearly shows that you're not a very good team. So he was almost in denial.

Jose's seen it happen once. He'd rather be dead that let that happen ever again. He's a prideful man who's desperate to prove himself again. He won't let it happen again I'm sure. Considering that at least for a year or two, he'll have the overwhelming personality of Zlatan there to keep everyone in check, Jose will be fine. The key is to buy English players or let them come through the academy. That way the core of the squad can never be turned rotten. We currently have: Rooney, Carrick, Young, Shaw, Smalling, Jones, Rashford and Lingard who have either been at athe club a while or has come through the academy. Jose MUST always push for players like them.
