Our transfers beyond Pogba

Right backs an interesting one because we have so many options there and at the same time have no options there. Valencia, Darmian and TFM can all play there, but are they ideal or what the manager wants out of a RB? Fosu-Mensah's more of a central player anyway, I'd prefer to not see him out wide.

Personally, the amount of rumours regarding Fabinho sounds like there's something there. Pogba's a proper all hands on deck deal, so I get there cant be anything done until we sign him up. Could definitely see us getting to work on Fabinho and a centre half in August. Matuidi wouldnt stun me as well. That's a transfer that seems to have been discussed independent to Pogba. I rate Matuidi a lot. I love watching him, and reckon he'd be great in our midfield. Seeing the French Connection of Pogba, Matuidi, Schneiderlin and Martial wouldnt be the worst thing in the world.

As far as out goings, Christ, you could go into double digets if you really think about some of the players likely to leave. We could do with trimming the wage bill as well, which probably means Schweinsteiger's the first one of the list.

Given that Rooney will most likely play and Pogba if he comes will be stuck in a midfield two I can't see him exactly starting like a house on fire, he needs to be the most advanced midfielder and have a license almost to roam the pitch looking for the ball. That said, I personally would love Matuidi next to him and for us to get a big strong out and out defensive midfielder. It would give us a lot more balance and I worry the likes of Carrick, Schneiderlin and Herrera just aren't good enough.

Yeah we need at least 8 more players before we are competitive.

Come on, we don't need a world class player in every single position. Our team will easily be as good as any in the league if we get Pogba.

I'm not saying I like Young just that I think he's better than Lingard. If we get Pogba would love us to sign a player like Mahrez where one of Rooney Martial or Mkt are up against being dropped if they don't play well! Competition for places would be so welcome at OT for the first time in years!
 
My view at the start of the window was that 4 players would be the ideal amount and that's still my view.

All 4 players are likely to feature heavily so we're already looking at at times 40% of our outfield players being not only new to the team, but new to the league. Any more and we'll be writing off another season as transitional.

Barring a younger player who'll be on the periphery I think we need to concentrate on outgoings now. I'd be selling Fellaini, Rojo, Young and Romero; whilst loaning Januzaj, Wilson and Depay.
 
I was of the opinion that I'd be happy once we have Pogba along with the other positions we desperately needed to fill and have done, then finish off the vital changes next season. But the muppet in me would also like another now, preferably a defender.
 
Signing a center back is the best way to finish the transfer window,if at all we manage to find the experienced one then it would be great.
RB we can still manage with Darmian/Valencia/Mensah ,with Jose at helm, I hope something positive comes out from Darmian especially.
 
After Pogba we could do with a RB of the class of Shaw (one of Valencia or Darmian can go), an experienced CB (Rojo can leave) and it would be good to add more competition to the attacking positions....

Mahrez would be fantastic and if we sell Lingard and Young it would trim the squad of mediocrity adding quality..... failing that sign the next South American wonderkid

Think I'd be happy to see the back of Fellaini, Rojo, Young, Lingard, McNair and depending on additions Jones/Valenica

Really want to see CBJ, Fosu-Mensah, Periera and Januzaj provide backup and play consistently in Europa League

left back - seriously?
I mean we have Shaw and as back up options we have Rojo, Blind, Darmain, and Borthwick-Jackson... what else do we need?
 
Defense
GK, CBs and LB have certain starters
CB lacks 1 experienced/reliable backup unless youth is relied upon
RB has numbers but lacks competent starter.

Midfield
Too many questionable personnel
Age/fitness- Carrick, Schweinsteiger
Quality - Herrera, Schneiderlin, Fellaini
Athleticism - Blind
Inexperience - Fosu-Mensah, Pereira

1 more addition, especially CDM will be required. We could get away with lack of playermaker this season if we effectively utilize Pogba, Mkhitaryan and Martial.

Attack
The attack picks itself.
However, unless Rooney beats the odds and keeps his place as #10 while performing at a desired standard, we'll need a change in system or a replacement. 4-3-3 could suit the team but 4-2-3-1 could require Pogba to move forward leaving a CM position without quality.
Back-up wise the attack has numbers but lacks quality, mostly because they are almost all young.

Verdict
RB addition is vital, especially a competent attacker while being a good defender, would also provide support to Mkhitaryan who can't be expected to be the sole responsible to attack from the right.
A CDM should be bought in too.

Yeah we have Shaw. I like Shaw but one he's not as good as he's made out not by a long shot.
Two he's always injured, I realise last season was an anomaly it can happen to anyone, but that doesn't mean we should just disregard that his injury record was far from stellar to begin with.
Rojo shouldn't even be playing for our reserve side never mind the first team, Darmian isn't even a real full back it seems he's more of a 'wing back' and if we don't buy another centre back then Blind will most likely end up being centre back cover for when all our other injury prone players get injured.
CBJ is alright though I forgot about him to be honest, he'll probably get loaned though.

If you want to massively over exaggerate what I said to make it sound ridiculous then by all means do. But that won't make Carrick and even Herrera and Schneiderlin good enough for a team trying to win the league I'm afraid.
Carrick has been great for us but this is one season too far, he should've retired. Herrera has about 100 question marks over him and Schneiderlin just doesn't look up to being our number six full stop. Now, I'm not saying the latter two can't maybe be squad players, but as for them both starting with Pogba I just can't see it working.

Herrera and Schneiderlin are easily good enough for a competitive team. Which teams have midfielders significantly better than this in the league?

In any case, we will not be signing additional two midfielders and two or three defenders.
 
The squad could do with another four additions: an experienced CB, a RB, a deep-lying playmaker and a pacey winger.

That's too much work and too much of an overhaul for a single window. In my view the CB should be the priority.

City,Chelsea,Arsenal and Tottenham have better midfielders than us even if you shoehorn Pogba in.
We won't sign 2 or 3 midfielders but if we want to be a top side we could do to I think.

Lets presume Schneiderlin and Herrera are currently our best midfielders.
Matic and Kante are better than them plus Fabregas.
Carzola, Xhaka, Coquelin and Ozil are better than them
Dembele, Dier and Alli are better than them but not by as much as the other two.
I just don't rate our midfielders, there's no concept whatsoever it's simply that Schneiderlin especially is not good enough to be Manchester United's number 6. He goes missing constantly when we're under pressure and it's simply not good enough unfortunately.

Has look absolutely miles out of his depth against PL teams.

He doesn't even show glimpses.

Darmien has been very poor, to say the least.

Fair enough; Valencia should be playing for bottom-half PL team perhaps.

Our left-hand side, however, looks extremely exciting. Shaw and Martial can possibly become the best in the world in their positions. Their ceilings are that high, imo.
 
Mateo Kovacic - Good attacking midfielder who drive forward will the ball but currently at Real.

I think we should delay our condemnation of Morgan until Jose has had time to work with him. Ander also. You don't become crap overnight.
 
Pogba potentially being the last signing would be a disaster.

We have big issues at RB, CB & RW for me that need addressing.

I'd look at:

RB: Fabinho

CB: Mustafi

RW: Mahrez, Draxler or James Rodríguez

Are you one of those fans who always says we need another 3-4 players however many we bring in
You can't bring a sh!Ttonne of players in all together and expect them to hit it off immediately

We brought Henrikh Mkhitaryan who can operate on the Right but has so far been used as a no.10

Valencia is a RW playing RB. Fosu-Mensah is a Midfielder doing the same. We only have Darmian who gets injured a lot.

When I said we need a RW. I think we do when you consider how poor Young, Lingard and Memphis are. I meant we need someone with pace and the ability to cross a ball. How else can one expect to get the best out of Ibrahimovic?

Rojo and Jones - Have not proved they can operate at CB for United and have struggled to prove themselves.

I am only suggesting these additions are made with player also going the other way seeking moves elsewhere.

You say we can't bring in a ton of players but if you have clear holes in certain areas, you must try and fill them. Not suggesting every one will be but I know my thinking is based on what i've seen from Jones, ROjo, Valencia, Young, Memphis and Lingard in the past.

I'm just not a fan of a square pegs in a round hole.

Strongly disagree. Our season capitulated the instant he got injured for a start coupled with this seriously impressive performances the times he did play.

I understand where you're coming from, but if Pogba arrives, I reckon we'd have as good a chance as anyone of winning the league.

I'm expecting Mourinho to get a lot more out of players than Van Gaal. You can count on the fingers on one hand the players who excelled under him. De Gea - he's a keeper, you can't really tactic him out of ability. Martial - just raw talent, who has too much pace and ability to drag down his early.
Smalling, at least in the first half of the season. Probably easier to excel with two defensive mids in front.

Jose is said to be interested in a CB. I understand the idea of a RW arriving is most unlikely. Only reason I thought it was something we need, was the signing of Ibra. At PSG he had Lucas, Di Maria and co. Serious pace around him to get on the end of things.

Now if you look at Valencia, Young, Memphis and Lingard I don't think any of them are even remotely good at crossing the ball. We struggled to find anyone to take decent corners last season. I don't see Ibra getting the service as they all prefer to cut inside rather than cross.

Rooney hasn't featured yet, so I can only imagine Mik is playing there until Rooney is back.

Martial and Mik are as pacy and creative as we need for now. Pogba and Rooney on top (flanked by a defensive type) should be plenty.
I'd have thought anyway!

Mata, Fellaini and Lingard are comfy as squad players. After all, last year they were starters!

Our season capitulated becasue we had a lack of quality and strength in depth in the squad. To suggest our season went to shite because of a left back who had 5 or 6 good games is odd.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that the season before the one just gone he was either rubbish or always injured, there is literally no guarantee that he will be able to stay fit for even 80% of the matches next season.

Possibly yeah, to be honest though I'd rather see Pereira be given a go at the number 8 spot in the side over Herrera. Herrera was always quite hit and miss.
 
I would be shocked if we didn't sell Rojo and then brought in an experienced centre back.

Jose loves a CB - how many 28 year old + CBs who are good enough are available though?

In fairness, if there's one thing Ashley Young can do well, he can cross the ball. I don't expect he'll get nearly enough minutes to make a telling contribution though.

No. A #6 would be someone like Ruben Neves, who we were briefly linked to a while back. I agree that we need someone like that who could succeed Carrick...I don't think we have an in-house candidate who could perform that role.
 
I really think we need a good defensive midfielder, Personally, I really do not think that Schneiderlin can live up to the expectations and fill that role, also we need a character, a leader in our defensive line because I cannot see someone in our existing personnel could do that...
 
We need a Scholes/Modric type. Carrick is the only midfield tempo setter in the squad and he won't play every game. One more is needed.

The right manager (Mourinho) can turn Schneiderlin into that player. I still have high hopes for him.
 
Saw many mentioned RW, but I thought Miky was brought for the exact position.
