There are a number of players who have shown their potential/quality this season and seem to have nailed down a place in the line up for next season. With potentially a big summer transfer window ahead I'm interested to see everyones views.

The areas I believe we need to strengthen for competition/replacements:

ST Zlatan
RW Mata
CDM Carrick
LB Shaw
CB Rojo

My 2017/18 team

Martial/J.Hernandez
Rashford Mkhitaryan Griezmann
Matuidi Pogba
Shaw/Semedo Gimenez Bailly Valencia
De Gea

You mean Ricardo Rodriguez? That guy is so 2015.. They successfully converted him to a mediocre CB this season. Even his free kicks aren't nearly as threatening anymore.

Mourinho has already ruled out buying more than four players.

Rashford
Martial Mkhitaryan Silva
Pogba Herrera
Mendy Rojo Bailly Valencia
De Gea

That's three and I'd add Josh King for cover/competition with Rashford.

If Shaw can finish the season strongly then maybe no Mendy either.

Semedo's a right back.
I know, but feel he's too good to miss out on simply because we have Valencia. Maybe he could provide competition on both sides and play on the opposite side like azpilacueta at Chelsea?

Azpilicueta work[ed] well as a LB because of how good he is in a one-on-one scenario defensively. As a result, he rarely ventured forward or offered any real attacking threat. Sort of similar to Darmian for us right now. Semedo's key assets are offensive, which would most likely be sliced in half if you were to expect him to get up and down the pitch on his weaker side.

Yeah, think he would be an ideal squad player for the counter attacking play Mourinho likes.
Do you think this is a realistic transfer? I'd love to see him come back, but only if it meant he was a backup sort of player behind another striker like Griezmann

Personally I do. Mourinho has a pull about him in where players want to play for him and this could be a deciding factor for Javier if he wants to play at United under another great manager. If we weren't to buy any other strikers I feel he go for it.

IF Rooney and Ibra both left us this season it could sway Hernandez who would only be competing with Martial and Rashford. Rather than Welbeck, RVP and Rooney when he left.

I should probably change my choice to Mendy but just haven't seen enough to him yet to do that.

----------------------------DDG/Oblak (Romero)------------------------
Valencia(/Aurier)---Bailly(Smalling)---Rojo(Blind)---Mendy(/Shaw)
----------------Pogba(TFM)-------------------Herrera(Fabinho)--------
---Mkhi---------------------------------------------------------Lingard---
----------------------Rashford------------Martial-------------------------

-> If DDG leaves we need a replacement (1); if not, its solid
-> Mendy would add value to defence (2), Aurier for width (3) but dont mind TFM or any other of the current as backup
-> I suppose we could use Fabinho (4) for Pog/Herrera rotation
-> If Zlatan leaves we need back-up, possibly Lukaku (5). We then have Mkhi/Mata/Lingard/Martial/Rashford/Lukaku for front 4; possibly A. Perreira as hanging winger/false 9 type of player.

All-in-all our current squad should be able to produce a decent starting XI.

:lol::lol:

Taking no prisoners there. Taking the best players from the teams above us. I like your thinking sir.

Wouldn't address our fullback issues but who cares!

Wonder how much those five would cost roughly (figures plucked from thin air):

Hazard: £100m
Sanchez: £40m (1 year of contract remaining)
Alderweireld: £30m
Kante: £50m
Eriksen: £50m (it is Spurs we'd be dealing with)

For a mere £270m we could have the best squad in the league.

Gotta admire the idealism of the lads above making teams out of fringe underrated european players and U-21s but that's a bit Arsenal-y, let's be honest. Do we want to win, or what?

Realistic:

-------------DDG-----------
Valencia-Bailly-Rojo-Shaw
-----------Fabinho----------
---Herrera---------Pogba---
Costa------------------Martial
-----------Rashford----------

------------Romero------------
Semedo-Smalling-Jones-Bertrand
------------Carrick-------------
---Fellaini----------Perreira---
Mata----------------------Mikhy
----------Hernandez-----------

I'm not so sure Jose will want a big striker anymore, I can see us becoming more of a counter-attacking team.

We dont have good enough defensive midfeilders or a stronger defense to play reactive way against posession based teams like liverpool and city , Surely United wont like to park the bus vs biggest rivals.

I think we will sign; Michael Keane, Fabinho, Griezmann, and a left back - unsure who.

You don't have to park the bus to play counter attacking football, though. SAF and Anchelloti were playing counters for years without the need of heavy defending. It's all about fast transition from defense to offense.

I'd be happy with that.

I would like to see a 4-4-2 of sorts with Pogba on the left from time to time. Plenty game time for Perreira too.

If those signings come in I am happy to see the back of Jones, Darmian, Rooney and Young.

For that transition you have to win the ball first from Posession based team who pass it around backwards and sideways for maximum control, Ofcourse you need heavy defending and work rate and speed up front to play that way. and with smalling jones Rojo you cant expect that.

We have conceeded 2nd least goals this year due to our Posession based proactive play where we press high which provides sheilding to our defense, and this is not gonna change , We have to just build on and finish games in posession with better attacking players . We are gonna play Poseesion based game with some counter attacking dynamics in possession.

We tried to play reactive in city chelsea and watford defeats and got 3 defeats.

I think we will keep Darmian and Young but the other two will go. Well one of Smalling or Jones will.

That would be a successful transfer window and also realistic.

First, you didn't tell me how SAF and Anchelloti were applying counter attacks without parking the bus ?

Second, I don't think a team who uses counter attacks will have all his goals from counters only. Counters themselves are not a style of play on their own imo. They're more of a helping tool used during the game when you got space and chance. You can't go full season using counters only to win games, hence I agree the bold part is what's going to happen and it doesn't contradict the idea. If we buy good fast players I can see Jose turning us to a team who can unleash counters whenever possible just like his RM side, but it won't be our only approach and we won't be parking buses.
