Couldn't ask for a better start, and the fact that it was at Old Trafford against a side we needlessly dropped points against to last season only made it better. Great platform to kick on from.

Mkhitaryan already has more EPL assists this season than he managed last season. Says something.

Great result and a very good performance. We need to start Martial on left and Rashford on the right. These 2 with Lukaku in the middle will give defenders nightmares.
I would try this. It's possible to start with Martial and Rashford both.

José at work baby! No more revolving doors at every damn position. Core is being built as we speak.

Such a glorious game. Goal scoring will NOT be a problem for us in the league. There's enough attacking talent to all be able to chip in. Especially with Lukaku up front, he's such a magnet and draws so much attention that it'll allow others to free up. So glad Martial bagged a goal as well as Pogba; should take some pressure off them and allow them to relax and do their thing now that the season has begun. And obviously Lukaku netting 2 was brilliant and just a preview of what's to come from him this year. Absolute beast
yeah, I noticed that too. He's just so big and fast, he indimidates the hell out of opposition defenders so they double or triple up on him. Rashford, Martial and other wide forwards will get loads of chances in the spaces that will create.

Very early days, indeed far too early to tell anything. But I am more confident than last year that we can mount a challenge.

Like almost everyone else I cannot understand why Chelsea allowed Matic to come to us , I think he could make a huge difference to us this year.

Agree in the main, but I think giving both CBs an 8/10 perhaps should be balanced by West Ham being bereft of attacking ideas (aside from an industrious Hernandez) and both Bailly and Jones being afforded excellent protection by Matic. They didn't have loads to do, weren't put under a lot of pressure over 90 mins, but they were solid.
Don't forget, Matic is the man who made John Terry look like he wasn't finished.

Brilliant! Thanks Chelsea for Matic.

That was the best opening game of the season since the 5-1 against Fulham, let's hope this season goes the same way as that one did.

What a start to the season. We bashed them bad early on and got on top and eventually when they finally got a foot in the game we deservedly got the first goal which was a huge kick in the teeth to them. Second half, the early goal killed the game, again just as they started to look to compete really and that sank them mentally. Yet again after an early slump they woke up mid half and tried things and of course it opend up for us. Which has not happened so often last season and as if we need reminding how we'd often get clawed back last season. But not today, today we were in no mood to be benevolent and we pushed on and got 2 more goals which we totally deserved and did not flatter us one bit. I agree with Garry Nev that Hernandez was the only one of them that kept going and trying hard all day to get something. But he got little or no hlep except maybe from Nobel. I worte earlier that we kicked our ex Little Pea, all over the park in that first half. But i must add not in badness or cynicism more in the spitit of over zealous competitivness. Which while i feel for Hernandez, it was wonderful to see us back at our former snarling selves.

As good as it was there is loads to be improved upon and its only one out of the first 6(that i noticed and i suppose you all noticed) and we, as fans, should demand 18 points from these first 6 because feck aiming for second place. So its off to the Swans to see if we can build on this. Personally be happy with a solid boring 1-0. Just look solid and be in controll all game. Keep them guessing who we really are and show up some weaknesses to be improved before the bigger tests.

Today I gotta tip the hat to, Matic Rashford Lukaku Martial Pogba Jones Mata(first half) Mkhi(second half) They all did well individually and in combination. But with tougher tests to come all we can do is keep winning. As i said earlier these are 6, very winable games and we need to be looking at 18 or at least 16 points if we are burry the slumber we have been in last few seasons and get us back up where we belong.

I am delighted with todays game and im really struggling to keep a lid on it, the inner muppet wants to run wild. Lets hope he has ample oppertuinity this season.

Only concern was at LB where Blind huffed & puffed but not really up to the standard of the rest of the side. Hopefully Shaw comes back soon.
Yea you are right in as much as our 2 fullbacks are our weakest positions and while there is cover its not of the quality we all probably would hope. I know you didn't mention Tony V but if he needs a rest or is injured we lack the quality or confidence in the replacements. Hopefully Shaw can up his output this season and Lindeloff is a lot sharper at right back then he has been so far if its lindeloff he sees as right back cover.

After reading the post match comments on redcafe before viewing the whole game I was expecting more!

First half was a controlled performance but rarely exciting and after the goal we clearly capitalised and punished West Ham for leaving space in between the lines when they tried to get going.

Great performance from Matic, Lukaku showed why he will score 25 goals this season and also Martial kept up his pre season form with another goal and assist.

Look forward to the next game. Still feel we need a left back though.

When our front players have a good game, it makes such a big difference. When you get that first goal or two, it opens the game up in a way that is perfectly suited to the way Mourinho wants to play. It seems obvious but it's as simple as that really, we need to find a way to get that first goal.

I went all crazy with my ratings, gave some players a bit too much compliments. But that's because it was our biggest margin of victory since a few seasons back. In the league, that is.

Matic was the real man of the match overall, but I gave it to Lukaku because both his goals felt essential in themselves. Getting the first goal, it goes without saying, and that little feeling of relaxation after his second. Pogba was brilliant too.
Literally couldn't believe that stat about it being our biggest victory in 3 years of whatever. I mean, 4-0 is a big score but they used to be fairly routine. Hoping we dish a good few pastings out this year.

 Did he actually say that? What a Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime.
He is such a bitter twat about us. I know I'm biased but look at Gary Neville. Regularly gives big compliments to all our rivals and points out when they've played brilliantly. If anything, he's harsh on United so as not to appear biased. Souness just never gives us any credit for anything.

Jones was good in pre-season and was great today. If he can actually stay fit he could finally be great for us.

With the best of respect, West Ham sat so so deep. It's incredibly difficult for any team to break 11 men down. We saw this time and time again last year and ultimately, we squandered the very few chances we had - costing us dozens of points in the process.

I felt that we were patient, composed and every time we lost the ball, giving them a slight inkling of an opportunity in moving forward, the defence swallowed the pressure and put us back on the Front foot. It was the very same in the Brighton/Citeh game yesterday - hence, the length of time it took Citeh to score.

When a team is content with a draw, or maybe snatching 3 points through an odd breakaway goal, it's hard for a spectacle to occur. I thought we were calm, composed and took our chances when they were presented.

Superb performance, this should massively boost United's confidence for the next upcoming fixtures. Matic's been brilliant in the midfield, the answer of what United have missed in the recent seasons.

Awesome performance! Honestly, while I expect us to win, I did not see the result being a 4:0, I am so excited!!

Yes, agree with you all that it is still very early in the season, but 3-points is 3-points, and I am sure that there are plenty of 3-points coming! The midfield was amazing - creative, aggressive, decisive overall (apart from the first 10-15mins), and can only get better when these players gel up even more as the season goes on!

Now Mr. JM, if we can please also start Martial more often ...... :D

I just want to put it out there that if you did not put 10/10 for Matic you do not know football.

Just kidding...

...or am I?

Guess we're too spoiled with neat first touch players this season.

Mikhi, Mata, Martial, Pogba, Matic, Baily...

Looking at their interplay yesterday was very nice to see. Martial's goal in particular, sexy first touch and then pure class on his second touch to set himself up. Wonderful.

I don't know if anyone else thought this, we started looking a bit tired around the 60 - 65 minute mark. Understandable given its the first game of the season. West Ham did too. I think we need to consider that when looking at that performance and remember not to let it make us think we're going to brush teams aside.

In a couple of weeks things will be a lot tougher when every team has match rhythm and match fitness.

Poor old Zabeleta was run ragged by Rashford and then Martial was brought on to finish him off. He must have been dizzy going back into the dressing room. But you just think, he's an old dog, it won't be so easy for Rashford against a younger, fitter LB.

A big bonus yesterday was Lakaku, his presence gives us so much. Not sure there are too many CB's in the league that can keep him quiet, which will obvisouly give our attacking mids a lot of space to run at.

Matic too, its been a long time since we watched a CM dictate the pace of a game like that for us. If we can keep him fit and play the majority of games we'll be in the running come next April.

I find Rashford as more exciting to watch. He's more dynamic, fast, and unpredictable. But i won't say that he's better than Martial.

Great way to start the season. The new additions looked like they'd played for us for a while, no settling in period for Lukaku or Matic at all. Glad we didn't get the 2-0 and sit back, hopefully we learn from last seasons mistakes and look to kill teams.

Martial is a better dribbler and finisher.

Martial has a better finishing and better in 1 vs 1 situations. Rashford has better overall movements on the pitch.

Both are exciting options to have on the flanks.

True, Rashford covers the pitch well. Martial is more specialized on his wing.

Can't particularly remember who let Sakho get the chance that Jose repeatedly mentions. Anyone has a gif of that? Might help with next game's lineup prediction.

Sexual chocolate.

Love how Jose is building this team.
Matic & Pogba looked so good together, lukaku fits right in, and Herrera & Rojo to come back, happy days.

Pacy direct football, we went for the throat too after the second goal.
Loved seeing that confidence/arrogance.

That was the ideal way to start the season. Massive win at Old Trafford where we had all those shitty draws and couldnt finish teams off. I thought overall we played well they didnt have many chances except for the one at the end of half time. Zabaleta was having Rashford induced nightmares on that flank, Pogba was strong and moved the ball forward, Lukaku was good, Mata had some great moments too. Miki drifts in and out of games but he has that sweet touch, Matic bossed the game I really underestimated this guy. Super pleased for Martial to come in and score.

There arent any negatives to talk about for me, thats about as perfect as it gets.

A very positive start.

Hopefully, this will also be a start for a more positive look of united from top to bottom this season for us.
