20 of SAF’s worst signings as claimed by this article:

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/foo...c-signings/ss-BBEIBzE?ocid=spartandhp#image=1

Several that I remember:

Owen Hargreaves – 34 appearances – injury prone.

Gabriel Obertan – inconsistent & injuries

Diego Forlan – just 17 goals in 98 matches

Mark Bosnich – SAF – ‘a terrible professional’

Karel Poborsky – 6 goals in 32 matches

Wilfried Zaha – SAF’s last signing

Eric Djemba Djemba

Juan Sebastion Veron - cost £28m in 2001

Massimo Taibi

Kleberson

Do you think SAF made a mistake in discarding any of these?

Veron and Zaha shouldn’t be on that list. Bebe and Bellion were worse signings off the top of my head. Zaha probably would have been alright if Fergie stayed to coach him.

I wouldn't say Zaha was a bad signing by SAF. He retired before he had a chance to manage him, and he was doomed under Moyes.

He has bounced back well from that disappointment and is Palace's best player, and one of the most exciting wingers in the league. If he can add more consistency and end product, I would have him back here.

Hargreaves was unlucky with injuries, he was different class when he did play and was very good for England/Bayern Munich before that.

Forlan was a strange one, he was highly rated in Argentina and we did well to get him, but he never had the confidence here but Fergie tried to persist with him. He shown how good of a player he was at Atletico, Villarreal and with Uruguay.

Obertan was for a few quid, it was just a punt really on someone who had shown potential so that wasn't a major flop.

But the rest, yes.

Bebe said in an interview with maisfutebol.iol.pt: 'I never took Manchester United seriously and never understood a word about what Alex Ferguson was saying.

'I thought, "I’m here, I’m doing well and I don’t have to try hard every day. It was my fault. I was messing around too much".'

And he laid bare the communication problems which led to difficulties in his relationship with Ferguson.

'I went into the room and saw that he was looking for me, very concentrated. He told me to cut my hair, it will look better. So I cut it the same day. In the next training session, he didn’t recognise me. I went past him many times and he didn’t know me.

'He didn’t speak much but I didn’t understand much. He has a difficult accent, so I understood nothing.

'He called me "Baby". After I told him it wasn’t like that.'

He also believes that the legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo hanging over the club is to blame for a poor working bond between the manager and winger Nani - and gave a theory behind the famous 'hairdryer treatment'.

'When he shouts at a player it is to help him so he feels he can do more. For example, he shouted at Nani many times. He always found a problem in everything he did. Probably because he thought he could be as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.'

But for all the strife, Bebe does have some fond memories of his time in England.

'One day I passed the ball through Ryan Giggs's legs and he told me, "Go on, go tell your mother you did this to Ryan Giggs".'

He also paid tribute to staff at the club - and to several Portuguese-speaking team-mates who helped him bed in.

'It was incredible. The people at the club helped me a lot - I learned a lot there. The first week was difficult. I was very nervous and I didn’t speak to anyone. I just wanted to be be alone and observe.

'Anderson and Nani helped me most, of course, because they speak Portuguese and Patrice Evra. I lived with Anderson for two months. He showed me the club and the city. I will always be grateful for this.'

The 22-year-old said he thought agent Jorge Mendes was joking about being wanted at Old Trafford.

The move in August 2010 came five weeks after a free transfer to Vitoria de Guimaraes from Portuguese Second Division side Estrela. 'It was all very sudden and unexpected. I was on the train and the club president of Vitoria called me. He said I had to go very quickly to Jorge Mendes’ house.

'When I arrived, Jorge gave me the news, asking, "Do you want to go to Manchester United? Yes? Let’s go." I didn’t believe him. I thought he was joking, honestly.

'I don’t know if the value was right or not but I know that Mr Ferguson believed the information they gave him.'

you can't do Fergies worse Signings without mentioning Bebe! what was it 7 million on a guy he had never seen play?

For me Anderson should be up their too, not just becuase of the fee, but the fact we kept giving him contracts, in the end did we actually pay his contract off just to get him off the books?

resent the Poborsky one though, the kid was good when he played, he just wasnt as good as beckham(which isnt exactly an insult) but as a back up to beckham, which he seemed to be bought for he was a fine signing.

Agree with Zaha that Fergie might have improved him if had stayed, jury is out on whether he has it at the top level currently showing promise.

Veron I thought was a flop in that you spent a lot on him and he never seemed to fit in your team and you sold him for a major loss, unfortunately for my team!

Don't think Zaha, Forlan or Hargreaves should be on there.

Zaha - never managed by Fergie
Forlan - great player just didn't quite work here
Hargo - won the CL the season he was fit

Hargreaves was great. Loved him while he was fit and able to play, shame hes such a cnut nowadays.

He's mentioned in the link, I had never heard of him so didn't mention. The funny thing is SAF had never seen him play and said Carlos Q liked him. Yet Carlos Q also said he had never seen him play. If true it begs the question... WTF?

Zaha would be Zaha even under Fergie. He doesn't have quality.

Sir Alex won the league with Cleverly in midfield. If Sir Alex could win the league with the likes of him, Fabio, Rafael, Welbeck, Macheda etc then I am sure he would have had Zaha playing decent.

Bebe, shows just how much faith Sir Alex had in his network. Must've been sad for him as he had to watch Moyes destroy the whole thing.

Made some shocking signings on reflection didn't he?

Trying to think of some more who haven't been mentioned yet and remembered Liam Miller.

Also Mike Phelan, Mal Donaghy and probably a few more. Hargreaves and Veron were clearly class players, but for different reasons it didn't go their way. I wouldn't have them on the list.

Maybe Kagawa as well? Started off quite well, scored a hat-trick against Norwich, was great against Leverkusen under Moyes. Apart from that very shit.

It's more the level of players we went for after the treble and then again after letting Ronnie go. It wasn't enough to become dominant in Europe. And then we weren't really fighting against blank cheque clubs.

He would have made good use of him no doubt but what happened to all those players after SAF left? I'm just saying if people think SAF would have made Zaha in this top class winger that would have continued to play for us at the top level is highly unlikely. Zaha isn't that skilled.

So he technically wasn’t a bad Sir Alex signing as he retired before managing Zaha.

How can someone who was a starter in a champions league winning team be a bad signing? Doesn't make sense.

I remember the cult of Hargreaves. He'd get the ball, run around in a big circle, then pass it to the person next to him, then every time the opposition attacked he'd for some reason be about 5 yards behind the play.

Then after the game people on here would aggressively claim he was great.

Meanwhile at OT everyone thought he was shite for the above reasons, only giving him brief redemption when Fergie stopped picking him in central midfield and he turned out to be a surprisingly decent fullback. Well that and the free kick against arsenal, which he scored literally while everyone around us in the stretford end was slagging him off.

'

The first one made me laugh, the second begs the question as to whether Jorge Mendes was acting as a Man Utd agent. Bizarre, perhaps the board trusted Mendes.

How was Hargreaves a bad signing ? We didn't know he would become an injury prone, but he was very good whenever he played and was integral in our double CL and PL winning season imo. Also Zaha can't be considered a bad signing as he didn't even get managed by Fergie.

I'll say the likes of Obertan and Djemba djemba can be considered terrible signings. Veron, Forlan and Kagawa were good players but didn't work out, so can be considered failure, too.
