Manchester United 'more boring ' under Jose Mourinho, says Louis van Gaal

Some of the leftovers from SAF's time don't need asking twice to pass backwards & sideways (not to mention being terrified of taking on an opponent) even now; no wonder Louis thinks his methods and instructions worked.

After yesterday I’ve not smiled much and laughed even less so for that alone thank you Louis

In reality though I would say that Louis Van Gaal was actually worse than Moyes when I really think about it from a pure on pitch standpoint, I remember Big Ron and very early Sir Alex but I’ve NEVER seen us as bad to watch as we were under Van Gaal.

I agree. All the stuff surrounding him was way more entertaining than United is now. No more videos like this anymore:

Having a pop when the chips are down. Feck off Louis. The LvG brand of football was torture like I've never known before.

To be honest I think some games under Jose have been a lot more boring, at least with LVG there was always watching the young players and seeing players having ability and confidence on the ball. If only those deckers would have tried to make something happen.

The comments don't surprise me after how his time here ended. Was hardly going to speak glowingly when for the last five months of his time here it was an open secret he was going to be replaced by Mourinho, then when we won the FA Cup all the questions in the post-match presser was about Mourinho replacing him.

I agree. All the stuff surrounding him was way more entertaining than United is now. No more videos like this anymore:

Mourinho will never manage a game as absolutely fecking horrendous as the 0-0 against PSV or the 1-0 against Sheffield United.

What about when we needed the win against Wolfsburg to get into the knockout stages and he took off Mata for Nick Powell who was not even match fit.

I really don't think so. We can be defensive at times under Jose, but didn't we break some sort of record for consistent games without a fecking shot on target under LVG or something?

We could go whole games without a shot on target, has that ever happened under Mourinho?

Probably but shots on goal aren’t the only aspect of football and not the only thing that make it exciting. I enjoyed the movement and what it was supposed to be building towards and I had excitement for the future and what I was seeing. Obviously others don’t agree with that but everyone is different so no big.

Van Gaal did similar to Bobby Robson at Barca. I like him but these comments are disappointing.
Why? Didn't Mourinho have his shots at him early on in his reign talking about how he had to change everything the whole philosophy or whatever that's been ingrained into the players before they play like his team?

He's had more conscious or unconscious indirect pops at LvG and has also took a job behind his back. If anything, I find it admirable that he has remained silent for so long.

For me, anybody who says we are more boring now has simply (probably for the better) erased LVGs tenure from memory/misremembering. LVG games would drain my soul. We'd go entire halves with 1 or 2 or even 0 often. Atleast under jose we complained last year excessively about missing tonnes of sitters or having attacks and failing to score causing draws. At least Lukaku is getting at least a couple chances for him to complain about us fluffing.

In fact, I'm pretty sure one game Herrera scored, but was bollocked by LVG afterwards because he was not supposed to be in that position.

The work done by van Gaal was a huge disappoinment and it looked like he has lost the connection to reality, but nobody is better to get rid of the dead wood..prob too much of it at United though..I would say an uncoachable bunch.

I thought he and Mourinho had a good relationship but that seems to have been train wrecked after Mourinho and Gill plotted behind his back while he was busy winning us the FA cup.
Where did you find out it was Gill?

What a plonker. I mean how can he even say it? The fecking irony.
For all of Moyes faults, he never had a month worse than December 2015, which was the most disgusting month I have ever witnessed.

A dish best served cold. Very cold in this instance.

I can't imagine any manager has had a worse two summers in the transfer market than LvG did here. Did the interviewer ask him about that?

Love Louis, but this is bad timing. Understand where he's coming from, but...

Incidentally, he was also quite nice about Jose, but I don't see that part of the quote here?

For all his faults Moyes was only here 8 month. He didn't let anybody go who didn't need to and his two signings have actually worked out ok.

LvG on the other hand was a complete disaster. His dealings in the transfer market alone set us back years. He had money and time, wasted both.

This is why I love LVG. I hate his football but he never fails to get a laugh out of me. Underrated comedian. Can we hire him back for his press conferences, PLEASE?

He told Fox Sports in Holland: "If you ask me how did I do at United, I will say it was my best year ever, given the circumstances I was working under."

Oh
Yeah, because LVG were given a blank cheque, isn't he?

I remember a day I was so bored and wondered whether to take a 20 minute walk or watch the first 20 minutes of us against a midtable team knowing we would create 0 and the game would make me go into the deepest REM cycles of sleep.

I took the walk. Of course it was 0-0 when I game back. 0 shots. Just as it had gone the previous 5 matches. Thank you for the memories Louis.

And LVG got us Martial and promoted Rashford.

I would argue it was Moyes' lack of decision making and not taking advice, plus his negativity that's set us back. Even Jose is finding it difficult to some extent. It's not easy coming out of the slump that Moyes put us in. Yes, LVG didn't work out, but there's no way he was as bad as Moyes.

Also, most fans wanted us to have a clear out and LVG did it. Can hardly throw that in his face. You can only blame him for some of his signings and his crazy Rooney obsession, and rightly so.

By now, I'm all for launching surgical air strikes against these feckers. I know an old man who every time he sees an RAF jet pass overhead waves his umbrella at it and shouts, "Go get em, lads!" I'm going to call him up.

Yes, it was the Everton match, after the Arsenal 3-0 game, LVG was furious with Herrera, because he shouldn't be in the box, great cross by Rojo though. Rigid bastard. I actually think Pep did the same at Barca once, can't remember the player though.

He's talking shite, but what he said is great!

We (builders/welders/ice cream men and students) on the Red Cafe can't influence Jose any way, no matter how much we kick up a fuss on the forums about what United should and shouldn't do, Van Gaal can, so hopefully quotes like these will touch a nerve with Mourinho and influence him to not be so negative next time in big games, probably won't but if anything can, it's articles like this.

Yeah this is the most entertaining thing with the LVG era no doubt. The part with Rojo, Fellaini and Jones head is just so bloody funny it cheers me up a bit today.

Give Moyes a second season and it probably would have got that bad.

Just to compared under Moyes people got entertained watched us. It was annoying for us since we didn't play great most of the time, but I think neutrals must have liked watching us fecking things up and at least doing things. Even watching West Ham now with Moyes I can kind of enjoy watching it.

With LVG everyone watching the game would fall asleep. As a cure to insomnia it might work though so yes I guess we can give LVG credit to laying the foundations for future medical advancements in that area. Still that is as far as I would give him any credit.

This one.

Van Gaal - whose side only scored 49 league goals in his final season - insisted he does not hold a grudge against his predecessor.

'He is not an awful man,' the Dutchman added. 'I think he is a sympathetic guy. He was my assistant at Barcelona.

'I worked with him and what Mourinho did is what often happens in football.'

LvG having a laugh. I'll never forgive him for the disgraceful and fireable performance against Norwich at home.

"Under the circumstances" he says. The circumstances of having something like £350m to spend?
