Maguire is very good, what is it you think he lacks?
I just don't see enough of an upgrade over what we have already, if Jones and Smalling we're playing at lower PL clubs you can guarantee the same people who want McGuire would want them

the guys name is literally in the title of the thread and you still can't spell it right?

Jones and Smalling are old fashioned stopper CB's that head it and kick it clear, Maguire is a skillful possession based CB, he's what John Stones wants to be when he grows up

I watched him live at Anfield around a month ago and thought he was fantastic. Absolute monster physique and has a big presence on the field. I think he’s worth a punt, certainly better than the nervous wreck Chris Smalling.

Nail on the head.

Maguire is what Spanish and Italian clubs look for in CBs rather than those who can just head away endless throw ins and corner kicks.

Plenty of people said both Jones and Smalling were 'surprisingly good on the ball for big lads' at Blackburn and Fulham respectively, and during their first couple of years with us. It's easy to give that impression when you're at a club where the bar is so much lower and especially when you're playing in a three man back line.

In a top four side, he would quickly be regarded as a solid defender but not that special on the ball.

Jones may have been but I don't think Smalling ever was described as a ball playing CB at Fulham, as for how Maguire would do at a top 4 side well obviously that remains to be seen

Ask Mourinho what he thinks about Smalling's distribution or lack of it.

Jones' development was murdered by injury. As for McGuire, he is a composed, slightly slower, superior on the ball version of the current Jones and Smalling. If we were kicking both out I'd replace happily them with him. I feel if we ever invest in another cb it won't be to block Tuanzebe and Lindeloff's path to the first team. But to be able to challenge and rotate with them.

He is special on the ball. Wouldnt matter what team he is at.

He's great. He'd keep us more composed at the back as he doesn't resort to hoofing under the slightest bit of pressure, and would help Alexis and Pogba out in that they wouldn't have to constantly come deep as often because we'd have a defender who's capable of carrying the ball forward when there's space and has got a good pass on him.

Rate him as one of the top three centerbacks in the premier league. Very good defensively, but he is also very good with his passing. He has also made a few good runs forward this season which took me by surprise considering his size.
While City won't be in for another centerback after getting Laporte, we were briefly linked with him for a move next summer and was very excited. Whoever gets him will be much improved in my opinion.

I don't think that makes much sense at this point. Surely if we buy another CB now it has to be someone who is better then every CB at the club. If we buy Maguire to sell Smalling and Jones just so Lindelof gets to play, we are not strengthening the squad.

Maguire would first be an upgrade on Lindelof and Rojo if anything and if Tuanzebe plans to be our CB he should be fighting off bigger challengers than the likes of Maguire, Lindelof and Rojo. I think he is good tho, but he seems a bit overrated here right now, and i don't see a big reason to get him. Ok, it seems tempting to maybe replace Jones and Rojo with him and another top defender, but buying 3rd defender shouldn't be priority right now

I personally don't see a need for a top cb let alone buying any more CBS for that matter. Bailly is going to be top class. So is Lindeloff. Tuanzebe has the potential to be and Smalling, Jones, Rojo and blind are excellent cover. If we were at all to let the Smalling's go I see zero reason to buy a starting cb. That is where a Maguire then makes sense because a squad always needs good competition/cover. Even then I'd rather give that role to Fosu Mensah. People on here seem to constantly overlook the fact defence is by far our strongest department in our first team.

You can't have Valencia, Young, Bailly, Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Shaw, Blind as your senior men with Riley, Fosu-Mensah, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson and Mitchell as the talent under them and you still say you need more defenders.

I definitely agree with your sentiments, the media always overplay CBs at smaller clubs, especially if they are competent on the ball or playing in a defensive set up. I thought that when the press was raving about Keane, sometimes it is easier to stand out at a smaller club.

I disagree when it comes to Maguire though, I think he is an excellent CB and rate him very highly. Time will tell though mate!

He did well in that game but was badly exposed on their goal though

He seems slow on the turn when I have seen him (limited time tbh) but other than that he's been impressive.

Can't understand how people think he is good enough for us, he is nowhere near top level.

Aye. Looks way way out of his depth right now. Nerves or not enough experience playing non-english sides starting to show.

Saying that, this system seems to be holding walker from showing his best too as he's been brilliant for city as a right back and he's been held back to allow trippier to do what he's been asked to do.

Easy to say someone is good on the ball when his team is used to having little if it.

Makes a bad pass or two, and gets written off. He lacks experience, give him a break. Walker was more at fault today than him

He's great in the air I'll give him that, but when it comes to defending on the floor he's a big liability and has been all season.

He's great at running with the ball and he's so dominant in the air. I like him. Not the best defender when the ball's on the ground, but if he had that too he'd be probably be World Class.

Thought he played well. Involved in both goals and generally strong in the air, and good on the ball. Still young and without much top flight experience. Fair play to the lad.

Wins everything in the air. He admitted he was a bit nervy at times which showed. Hopefully his confidence rises.

I think his biggest flaw is his lack of pace. He was really caught out when Khazri et. al made those rare runs in behind him.

Monster in the air though. Won everything in their box.
