LVG: Man Utd is a commercial club, not like Bayern Munich.

I read it as a dig at Woody. He is basically saying that when he had issues, he talked with Hoeness and Rumennigge, who know a thing or two about football, even if they had different opinions. Here at United, he had to talk to Woodward, he is clueless.

It would have been much easier if our transfer policy was "say howdy to the best players in the league and they will run and come to you"

Every club is all about money. Woodward's role is to make money so that he can buy players coach asks for.
Not really, there is two type of clubs, ones where the owner is in it for money and others were owners are in it for football, glory or narcissism. I suspect that United are in the first category but I'm not sure if that's a balck and white situation you can be in it for money and still put football very high in your priorities.

Schweinsteiger was finished by the time we signed him. He was regularly unfit throughout his first season, and was allowed to swan off around Europe watching tennis instead of sorting out his fitness. Then miraculously he was fit and ready to go for Euro 2016.

He seems a decent enough guy but he was taking the piss at Utd. Jose did the right thing getting rid of him asap.

Van Gaal can just feck off . I really hope he gets the Chelsea job, if Chelsea fans think they football they're playing under Conte is boring they ain't seen nothing yet!

If that's the case it's almost as if he's saying he needs oversight from football knowledgeable bosses to save him from himself. Sounds more like a knock on himself than United if that's how you were to take it.

Considering how less profits clubs make, it's really poor business decision if owner is in football to make money.

Yes Manchester United is a football club that goes for the money, but we do it to invest it on football, or are you going to tell me that we are not spending enough money on football?

Having good commercial partners and making money out of it to improve the football part is a club who does it for football not for just making money.

Saying Bayern is not a commercial club and doesn't care about the money is also not true at all. They will be dumb if they don't use their appeal to gain money to invest it on football if they care that much about football.

It depends, in the case of United the Glazers are only making money, they put nothing in it.

I have no way of comparing the values of both clubs, but his take seems legitimate to me. And yes, the treatment of Basti was very poor indeed.

I agree, that's why i think we should hire a DOF moving forward. Let Woodard handle the money/commercial side and bring in a DOF to take care of the footballing aspects, e.g style of play, player contracts, scouting/signings etc

This guy is clearly bitter. He loves bayern , the same bayern who sacked him in his second season, the same bayern who don't give a crap abut him even after helping them reach the UCL final. He should be thankful he got 2 full seasons here even after the dross he gave us in his second season. He spent insane money on average players which Jose is trying to ship out.

He could have got Kroos but chose not to, he has no right to moan about the players he didn't get. He had di Maria who he binned, he got Memphis who he couldn't use properly. Why is he blaming others for his flaws. Bitter man.

He cites 2 ex players for Bayern but fails to recognize that ex United players/managers are steeped in management, coaching, in the executive and across the club.

He's getting boring now.

Kroos rejected him and Di Maria wanted to sign for PSG. He didn't reject Kroos and he didn't bin Di Maria.

As non-executive directors the likes of SAF and Sir Bobby don't have any actual power at the club though.

And that's why we could afford to buy Bayern.

Nothing wrong with making money from your appeal, especially since we've had no problem with give the manger loads of money in the past 4 years.
Kek. Come and try. In 2014, we sold 8,3% of our shared for 110 million. So at that point, the value of just the AG (not the club, stadium also not included) was around 1,3 billion €.

What's funny is how you guys keep saying he's bitter because of his sacking, while his sacking by us was much worse and he had huge issues with Hoeneß, about whom he actually talks extremely negatively in the very same interview.
He has all the reason in the world to be bitter towards us, too.

Kroos didn't reject and agreed to the deal with us during Moye era but LVG withdrew from that deal when he took over.

Well SAF hired Moyes, perhaps that's not a terrible thing for a while. I also doubt that they have no influence at all.

He didn't use di Maria properly. Yes di Maria was a jerk but lvg didn't use him properly. Kroos it was reported was close to join united under moyes so it was clear lvg who wasn't interested to bring kroos.

He's so full of shit. Says himself that Basti was done physically, what was Mourinho supposed to do? We ain't running a charity here.

Bayern is a football club while we're a commercial club. Sure, I bet we'd also be a football club if we didn't have any competition in the PL and we could cherry pick our players from all over the league.

Bayern are walking the bundesliga by default almost every year and every player in the league gets to graduate to Bayern if he's good enough. He can't compare that to the PL.

He was complete shite at Utd though. A total and utter failure.

His ego will ensure he doesn't take any accountability for his failings here, so he's consistently lashing out at Utd to deflect.

He's a fecking idiot.

What’s wrong with having a commercial focus?
Nothing really, except that since Woodward has come in, we've been shite on the pitch, and there is almost definitely a link between the two. You do kind of need someone who knows a bit about football and dealing with football players/managers etc., to help run a football club.

Woodward with Moyes and then with LVG was, at best, questionable in his handling of the football side of things. We seem to have a habit as a club of twiddling our thumbs when there's a football issue to be sorted out that isn't in the hands of the manager...and Jose has had to moan via the press again about the same issues, and even now we have an issue with signing players to new contracts, for some reason.

I mean we can sign umpteenth noodle/watch/stationary provider partnerships, but we can't seem to sign our own players to new contracts...something is a bit wrong with the priorities there if the idea is to be a successful team.

He didn't really use Di Maria badly since Di Maria was fairly productive(3 goals and eleven assists in PL), in the case of Di Maria the player is the main responsible. Also PSG have used him the same way.

I find it hard to disagree too much with that tbh.

The commercialisation of the club is a necessary evil of what the Premier League has become, but I do think the excessive focus on the commercial side of things has had a detrimental impact on our on pitch performances. The lack of football men in the higher echelons of the club (l thought Bobby and Ferguson were involved with that side of things, but a quick check shows that they're not listed) has led to a some of our post-Ferguson missteps.
The 'football men' were responsible for Moyes. The single worst decision in the history of Manchester United and the biggest reason for our recent decline.

He has a (pretty small) point but he should just shut the feck up. He's looking for any opportunity to be insulting to the club and in turn the fans, who both gave him longer than deserved.

Not sure what his point about Bastian is? He's the one that bought him. Perhaps a little diligence was needed before buying someone for one of the biggest clubs in the world. He admits he was goosed then slates Jose for something that I'm not sure about (not playing a goosed player?).

Fergie knew a bit about football, and we ended up with Moyes because of it.

I don't see the problem with a commercial focus. We have a state funded club in our league, we need all the money we can get to compete. Easy to have football men at the top when you can bully every other club in the league.

Hard to argue with the money accusation
Totally agree. I think we became that from the days when Edwards tried flogging the club, Knight approach and so on. The Glazers have taken it to a new level. I can live with that. I think we can probably put Real Madrid in that bucket as well. How many clubs are actually run by football players, can't be many. Many clubs are now taken over by business people trying to run the club as a business.

I think he ir right about Mr. Fussball meister, as well. His body had gone. The PL is a different beast to DBL. There is no nice way of getting rid of someone who probably wants to see out his final contract.

LVG was a massive failure at this club and blamed everyone else along the way.

He bought Schweinsteiger and yet tries to act like that wasn’t even his fault.

Bayern can act more holy than thou but the reality is they have the monopoly in both finances and lure of young German talent. They don’t need to overpay for these players because other German clubs can’t say no to them.

Over the last few years they have managed to get Lewandowski, Hummels, Neuer and this season Goretzka. Do people find it a coincidence these players wind down their contracts only to sign for Bayern? It’s back handed fraud.

Why did LVG buy Bastian if he knew he was coming to the end? Surely that's his fault. Bastian was on very high wages and wasn't easy to move on once Mourinho arrived. We are definitely a commercial club but so are the best clubs in the world including Bayern Munich. They have the luxury of picking the best talent in the Bundesliga with no competition and we are competing against a state funded club. It's ridiculous to compare.

The correlation is clearly between the manager. Woodward's job is to secure funds for managers to do their jobs (as well as the commercial side), which he has done very well. We struggled since SAF retired.

What big club doesn't focus primarily on commercial value? LVG refuses to adapt to the modern game both on and off the pitch, which is largely the reason for his dismissal. He is bitter man whom would seemingly use every opportunity to run the clubs name in to the mud.
