They’ll start like lightning. If we can keep the ball better, unlike the first half v Palace, we should nullify a bit of their potency. Our midfield is key. It’ll be 4 in midfield as we cannot expose the back line too much. We also have to move quickly.

This will be a tense game but I cannot wait for it!

This is the sort of game that Fellaini would normally start under Jose as he will be looking to turn Liverpool with long balls to stop them playing their normal high-pressing games. I'm not convinced we won't try the same tactics but with Pogba in an advanced role to play the big number 10 role - if we pump it long to Sanchez, Mata and Lingard though for Lukaku to feed off the scraps though we won't be in for a pleasant afternoon.

You seem to be suggesting this one isn't being broadcast? It's on Sky, mate.
Nah it’s because I saw a video this morning with two of Murphy’s winners at Old Trafford and it reminded me of the game in 03/04.

We won 1-0 via a Danny Murphy penalty but the game was on Saturday at 3pm, so not on tv.

I’m pretty sure it’s the only time since I’ve been watching that a United Liverpool game wasn’t on tv.

One of the things to take into account is that Mourinho surely doesn't want a high intensity crazy game, with a Champions League much more decisive game in just three days. He would rest players if he could, and maybe we'll see some starting here that won't against Sevilla. But, specially in strategic terms, he'll want a relatively resting game for us in the first part of the Liverpool game, with them doing the most running with their crazy pressing, and then save it for the last moments of the match to try to nick it. It makes sense, but will be hard to endure for the fans and might just result in a stale match ending on a draw.

Surprised there's been a match that hasn't been on tv since the premier league era but certainly from around 98 onwards

Let's talk tactics. How do we stop this free-scoring Liverpool side?

How not to do it is go about it the way Guardiola did and go toe-to-toe with them. That is what Klopp lives for. Their high press is such a potent weapon.

Firstly, we need to quieten them down from the starting whistle. They are excellent at racing out of the blocks and landing haymakers. The game is over before you know it. The key is to frustrate them for the opening 20-30 minutes or so. This means letting players like Smalling have as little of the ball as possible, as he does not deal well with pressing. We may need to go long and circumvent the press.

If we can nullify Salah that's pretty much 90% of their attacking threat dealt with. His pace, runs and strength are simply world class. I have a feeling we'll be doubling up on him, either McTominay or someone like Rashford to track back and helping the fullbacks out.

I'm confident we can win the midfield battle, and Sanchez/ Lukaku will be difficult for their defence to handle.

I think the key lies in the opening half an hour. If we start like we did against Spurs and Chelsea it will be very difficult. If the players are sharp and up for it, then we'll beat them.

Normally would be against conservative tactics but I’m happy with whatever works best for the squad ahead of Sevilla, it’s all about that game for me.

Wow. Care to give a score prediction?
Genuinely think 0-3 or similar. They always play out of their skin against us and I don't think our defence will cope. In fact, I think they'll fall apart badly when Salad runs at them. I just hope Bailly can play.

Liverpool have hardly outplayed us since Benitez was there. You’re basing your prediction on form, which completely goes out of the window when United and Liverpool meet. Liverpool won’t fly at us because they know we’ll be setting up to counter and their back line cannot handle the pace of Lukaku, Rashford, Lingard and Sanchez. Combine that with the atmosphere at OT and they’ll settle for a point right now. It’s going to be a cagey affair, with both teams looking to counter.

Not a bit nervous about this game. I couldn't care less about 2-4th place, it reaps the same reward.

I might be so bold and predict we're actually going to win this game*. 2-0.

*if we don't rest players for the CL.

    ----------------------Pogba-------------------------
    ------Lukaku---------------------Sanchez-----------

SUBS - Rashford (McTominay), Martial (Pogba), Lingard (Young)

PREDICTION: - Jose sets out defensively, aiming to win 1-0 with a late second hal goal. Liverpool score inside the first 10mins which completely destroys his plans, and we start haphazardly attacking without much of a plan. We got 2-0 down, pull one back around the 65th minute mark and then concede another on the counter.

    Man United 1 - 3 Liverpool
    Lingard Salah x 2,Firmino
    :houllier:

Only twice in Mourinho's 100 odd games have we conceded more than two goals in a game - Watford and Chelsea in October 2016.

Only City and Burnley have managed to score more than one goal at OT in around 50 games in the Mourinho era.

    Unlikely that we'll concede three.

Mourinho is unbeaten at Old Trafford in his Utd career, except against City, where we've only lost by one.

We've scored at least twice in 9 out of our 14 home league games this season.

In Liverpool's 3 away games so far against the top 6 this season, they've shipped 5 goals at City, 4 goals at Spurs and even 3 goals at Arsenal.

    So we're going to lose 3-0? :lol::lol:

    No they don't.

They've won twice at Old trafford in almost 15 years.

    That's incrdible negativity.

Oh come off it. De Gea is great but he hasn't been saving us as you suggest.
In fairness, whenever we play LFC, DDG puts in a MOTM performance.
So, LFC supporters could quite rightly think that DDG is single handedly preventing them from beating us.

Both sides will want to break on the other to begin with. So could be a bit of a snooze-fest until someone scores.

Having said that their attack's ability to score easily & quickly is a concern.

So, I am spinelessly not very optimistic - as is usual for this fixture, tbf.

You're saying that as if it would be some major shock.
No, not at all. Just my thoughts.

Both teams have their frailties. I just feel we are playing them at a good time for us; I think their style of play will allow our attackers to be able to exploit space (rather than try and break down an ultra-defensive team), and even though we will be tested defensively, I think our strengths will overcome their's on the day. I see a good game and a good performance.

I just HOPE that Mourinho tells us to go out and play... rather than try and stifle as per usual against the big teams...

Game where Pogba really needs to drop his showboating and just keep things simple. Needless to say it's a 6-pointer. Going for a 1-1 or 2-2 draw.

Is a defeat that damaging for either side?

I don’t think Chelsea and Arsenal are going to really threaten the top four from here so we’re probably safe.

It's damaging from a finishing 2nd POV, if we loose then there's little chance of us finishing second (given we have to go to City). If you loose it gives us a nice cushion

I don’t really care where we finish between 2nd and 4th. There’s no benefit to finishing 2nd over 3rd apart from bragging rights.

Actually I’d rather we finish 3rd. We normally fall apart the season after we finish 2nd.

I wouldn't mind some showboating if he also actually ran (and jumped) a bit.

I don't think there's any difference between 2nd, 3rd and 4th (except bragging rights) because 4th spot gets instant qualification to CL. I may be mistaken.

It'd be shit to lose because I hate Liverpool but in the big picture I don't think so really.

I don't see Chelsea catching Utd or Liverpool, maybe they could get Spurs but even that's unlikely.

As a UTD fan, I always look forward to the big games. These are the games you get the buzz about and have confidence we can get a positive result, home or away.

But under this reign of Jose, you just know he is going to set up defensively and play the same dross negative football we've seen far too often. He's effectively saying he knows Liverpool are a threat and we cannot match them toe for toe.

I do disagree completely, we got the players to match them, and beat them. I'm hoping I'm wrong and we attack, get at Liverpools defence (which is still shaky even with VVD) but this is Jose. It'll be bore football from us and them pressing/attacking when they can.

I hate to say it, but I'm expecting a frustrating 90 mins from us.
