Tbf if we're signing a player to primarily be backup then what level of quality are you guys actually expecting?
Giroud as a backup striker went to Chelsea for £18 million. Considering Arnautovic can play all over attacking line, I don't think (if this is true) we are buying him only to be a backup. He will get his fair share of minutes and I just don't think he is good enough.

whether he's seriously on Uniteds radar or not (I highly doubt it) - I can't help but admire how far he's come. He used to be one of the most infuriating players I've ever seen, and it seemed he'd never make anything of his potential. The move to England was brilliant for his development, he seemed to settle down there off the field too (in contrast to his Bremen days, where he'd regularly make negative headlines). Plus Marcel Koller was really good for him in the national team. The young Arnautovic was a frustrating showboat ... him making defensive contributions and working for the team would have been unthinkable just a few years back. Happy with how he's developed and hope he gets a bigger move than West Ham.
How far he has come?? He is soon 30 and has scored 33 goals in 156 games in the Premier League for Stoke and measly West Ham, he hasn't come far at all. He is like a violent, Austrian Balotelli without the off-the-pitch scandals. Watching him, I often see a frustrated, violent and inconsistent player capable of getting a red card in every match. He damn sure should have had more than the two red cards he has gotten in England since he arrived.

Fine with being a backup striker. He certainly should be at a bigger club.

Maybe Martial for Arnautovic swap deal?
I'm somewhere in between these two quotes. Martial is worth so much more than Arnautovic. While he certainly isn't awful.

Absolute joke if we go for this guy, reminds me of Fergie signing Young to catch up to Barcelona, in no way will this signing improve the squad whatsoever apart from getting in a "puts in a shift Mourinho style" player. Awful.

he's scoring double figures in the Premier League and has drastically improved his overall game. So yeah, for Austrian standards he's come far. We're really not that great of a football country, him and Alaba are leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else.

I'd imagine we'd be buying him as a jack-of-all-trades, a role in which he'd be fine and probably see enough gametime to justify his purchase.

If we were bringing him in to be a first team player or if he cost a huge fee, then I would agree he's a bizzare signing.

Most reports have mentioned him in the same terms as Manzukic though, specifically as a option up front. In which position he will definitely be second choice.

That for me is even more worrying than spending £50m on him. Giroud is a belled but is almost definitely a better backup striker.

What a waste of money this guy would be. If this was true it would be another joke signing.

He's a good player imo and his mixture of physical and technical attributes is interesting, but spending big money on 29 year olds who don't improve our first XI is absolutely insane.

If rumours are to be believed, it seems that Jose is preparing for life without Martial.

Recently, we've been linked with, Arnautovic and Mandzukic, both of which can play up top and left wing - the same as Martial.

Difference is, I can imagine the aforementioned players will be more satisfied with a squad role than Martial.

If people think we're going to have world class players on the bench then they need to think again.

if we buy him, it wouldn't be for more than 25M£, stop overracting people. we're not crazy.
And at that price, it would bad idea, he would be like a Giroud for us.

I bet Jose being there has everything to do with Arnautovic and nothing to do with him being paid a shed load of cash to provide analysis for RT during the world cup...

Pretty sure him being there has nothing to do with Arnautovic. We would have decided our targets by now and done scouting.
probably to do with his RT giig.

Pretty much agree. I do think you're also right about jack-of-all-trades part because he really can play practically everywhere (backup, right or left wing, second striker). Only bolded part is the problem, for that money, we should target better quality of players considering aspirations we have imo.

Anyway, we'll see. Still nothing concrete in this story.

Arnautovic left the Bundesliga as a mediocre player without a perspective at Bremen. United cannot possibly be serious about signing him. For money, too.

Honestly I’d love to know why everyone’s assuming he’s there for Arnautovic ? Have we been linked with him? Has Mou expressed a liking for him? I’m very confused.

Sell Martial buy Arnautovic sack Fergie kill me
:lol: Me too pal. I slowly came round to the Perisic signing last year, but I just can’t get on board with this. Not even sure I could at £15m. Is he really better than Lingard?

Sanchez can do that as well.

Di Marzio linked him to United last week, plus he played for Mourinho at Inter. So yeah, there's a few clues, but it could easily be all BS. I still think it is.

You buy Giroud for his great ability on headers and scoring important goals, the player you throw in after 80 minutes to get the equalizer. Arnautovic has never shown anything like that in his entire career. He scores from 40 yards in one game, then he goes silent for ten games and then he kicks or elbows someone.

Don't rate him at all and I would be very disappointed if United spend any decent money on a player of that calibre, even as a back-up. He's an Everton-level player at best.

Interesting target. I've said before to me he's a 1 in 5 player, same with Shaqiri. Plays amazing/scores a wonder goal then you don't see him for the rest of the month.

I'm not really sure he's effective as a central striker either, he was better at Stoke playing a wide position and you obviously have Alexis, Martial and Rashford for those positions plus Bale of course....(been reading too much Redcafe).

Don't know why Mourinho has to go and scout him, he's probably seen him about a hundred times in the premier league and indeed coached him for a bit at Inter so he surely knows all Aranutovic's strengths and weaknesses.

For that sort of price you might aswell stick another 20m and be in for Lewandowski.

Just putting it out there but what if Mourinho used Aranutovic as a decoy and was really watching/trying to tap up Alaba.

That would be a muppet signing, can play well at left back and in midfield so areas where Man. United need to improve.

I think this is Jose's last Summer with us anyway, so this will probably be his Fellaini parting gift like Moyes.
That's the thing though. We gonna allow this guy to sanction sale of players with potential like Martial, Shaw, and leave us with s*it like Lindelof, and this guy.

Why is that so surprising, that's the level of player we should be going for

Alaba - Martial swap. I'd consider it very much and do it if I were United.
