Did Liverpool have a good season?

Of course it was a good season. The top scorer in the league, and the top scoring front 3 in Europe, 135 goals scored in a season, conceding less than any season since Rafa last, obvious progression in CL, reaching the final, whilst other English teams feel short, and qualifying for the CL again, with Keita to come and Fabhino too, and likely Fakir too. Most of all an obvious football identity.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but I wouldn’t swap Liverpool’s season, with UTDs season.

Think that's the story really.

Top scorer in world football, 135 goals in total, yet still win nothing and scrape top 4.

Something pretty wrong there!

Best result from an English team in five years.
Internationally only Chelsea have had a better result over the last ten years.

Liverpool back at the top of international fotboll.

For me it is obvious that they had a good season.

It’s clear that they have progressed. They secured CL football and were within 90 mins of winning the bloody thing! They have a system that brings out the best in their forwards and have invested in the defence. 2 good midfielders confirmed coming in. Add a reliable goalkeeper and they are a contender next season (why don’t they grab Buffon?). Yes they’ve had a good season (by recent standards). If I was a pool fan I’d be excited. Ducking cnuts

What was wrong there was that we didn’t get a decent defence together until January and the overall quality of the squad is limited in both numbers and talent. And yes, like all but two teams in PL., we won nothing but its the progress that counts for me and most other LFC fans. You can say all you like that we scraped top 4 but we were in it pretty much all season. Getting to the CL final stretched our already limited resources which which were further hampered by injuries, ultimately resulting in very mixed teams being played in a few PL matches near the end of the season.
Yes, somethings are wrong but the football is good, there is an identity in the way we play and for as long as we have Klopp, the chances are that we will continue to progress.

Next year.

Every year.

Sorry, I’m not with you. I dont see them winning either PL or CL next year and I certainly dont think that they, or any team in PL is so favoured on an annual basis. No doubt there will be an expectation on City next season but thats about it.

I'd say they had a fairly good season, yes. 4th isn't awful for them - until Klopp came in they'd basically turned into a glorified upper mid-table side with the exception of 13-14 and the slip season, and getting to the CL final was genuinely impressive.

Are you saying that City is the only team with realistic expectations of winning the title next season and the rest of us are merely playing for second place? I disagree. Personally, I expect United to offer a significant title challenge next season, irrespective of who we sign or do not sign in the transfer market.

No excuses.

Challenging is one thing but stating as you effectively did that ‘this is our year’ is purely speculative imo.

Not necessarily, I mean you either believe Liverpool to be capable of mounting a title challenge next season or you do not.

So which is it, will they challenge won't they? Just a question.

As I said earlier, I do believe that we will be in the mix but I dont think that we are going to win it.
Anything can happen in football as Leicester proved and so we can, along with many other teams, but its not an expectancy.

I find it funny how people can say they had the better year. Both teams lost in a cup final yet one was runners up in the league and ahead of the other.
Really funny mystery. Maybe specifying which cups finals they've reached might help why some people think they've had a better year.

Okay, fair enough mate.

Just that there are a fair few pundits already predicting Liverpool to win it next year. Funny that none of their fans concurs.

I think that we’re a bit off yet. Still no real depth. Any team that goes into a CL final with a bench full of Mignolet, Clyne, Klavan, Moreno, Lallana, Can, Solanke, has work to do!

You had a great injury record compared to the other big sides let's be honest. Can be no excuses there.

There was a period that we had no sub for midfield due to injuries. It wasn’t cited as an excuse only as a point of squad depth, in response to a question of ‘what was wrong’. If you’re interested read posts above to see the context.

I'm just wondering why, when you're playing such fantastic football and scoring the most goals world football has ever seen, have you ended up a million miles away from the title and easily outclassed in the CL final?

Doesn't add up.

Yes they did have a good season but I'd like to spin the question in the following way:
If Chelsea made top 4 maybe instead of Spurs, would they have had a better season than Pool? My answer would be, yes.

Still better than being a million miles away from the title and losing a lesser final to a lesser team whilst playing less fantastic football and scoring less goals, amirite?

Sarcasm isn’t really that clever at the end of the day and there is a possibility of being taken serious without it.
A lot of things in life dont add up as in football. I could ask you as to how a team that had spent infinitely more than Liverpool under Klopp come up so short in only the 2nd round of the CL? Does that add up?

And? Neither I, or the media, are touting United as the best thing since sliced bread. We keep hearing about Liverpool though yet I see absolutely no substance to all these goal records being broken. Why is that? Why did you scrape in the top 4 on the last day of the season? Why did you get taken apart by the first top tier European team you played in the competition?

If your go to argument is 'well lets flip this on united' you clearly have nothing useful to add.

PS united were closer to the title than Liverpool, finished runners up in the league, achieved their highest PL finish since SAF and reached yet another cup final.

Liverpool had a good season. Par for the course. Nothing more, nothing less.

Another overly defensive cry baby who harps on about United when you don't like the tone of the thread. (Which is about Liverpool not United).

Get a grip.

I would never trade a second place finish for a fourth place one, especially with our biggest rivals.

We didn’t scrape top four either. We were so comfortable within the top four that we could afford to drop points left right and centre at the end of the season.

We finished closer to third than we did to fifth.
