ę is best approximated by pronouncing it as 'en'. And the Polish y is pretty damn short. Whereas y and i have the same sound in Czech for example (which is the closest language to Polish along with Slovak) the Polish i marks a long vowel sound. Compare Szczęsny and Milik. Polish spelling really is a nightmare compared to other Slavic languages.
