Are you optimistic about the new season?

See no reason why/how we will close the gap on City apart from them not being quite as good. Nothing suggests we can over-take them.

With that in mind it's hard to feel very excited. City play the better football and will likely retain the title. Liverpool play the better football and might finish ahead of us. Wouldn't be surprised at all.

Just hope we don't have a Mourinho meltdown season.

I'm a tad optimistic. When I look back at a time when we were struggling to win the league (2006), there were question marks around Ronaldo & Rooney and whether they could spur Man Utd on to win the league.

I look at this current squad. There's Lingard, Rashford, Pogba, Martial maybe I've missed some but the point is who is going to have one of those seasons where their impact will lead to a premier league title.

I'm just not sure this current crop can do it.

It seems to me that our season will ultimately rest on whether Sanchez can rediscover his form of a few seasons ago. If we hadn't signed him last year then we would undoubtedly be looking to sign a world class attacking player at the moment.
Always optimistic at the start of a new season but no signs that we have addressed the obvious weakness in our squad.

Don’t think we can resolve all the issues we have in this transfer window and we aren’t evolving any kind of playing style to help bridge the gap to city.

If Liverpool sign a decent keeper then they probably finish above us, Spurs will probably be similar to last season and Chelsea and Arsenal are unknown quantities. We should finish 3rd or 4th but the football won’t be great to watch so it is easy to see why there is so little optimism.

Last season feels like it’s about as far as Mourinho will take us however long he stays and if he isn’t winning it will potentially turn toxic at some point as he will openly blame anyone and everyone but himself.

Pretty much this, it all hinges on Sanchez (and Pogba/Martial/etc to a lesser extent) and I'm not very optimistic about him.

Other than that Fred seems like, at best, a slight upgrade on Herrera (this isn't meant as negative as I quite like Herrera, I just don't think it will actually improve our starting 11 all that much). Dalot is an exciting signing for the future but again probably won't actually improve our starting 11 this season.

A few of issues that we have do not necessarily require transfers. It requires players playing to their potential and working together with discipline.

The manager might also need to change things up a bit to get the best out of the key players and have the team playing slicker, quicker football.

We have a decent squad. Not perfect but 100% able to win the League.

A few quality signings wouldn't hurt though. A backup CF would be nice. When Lukaku was injured the way we play changed....for the worst. A RW seems a sensible decision....because we don't have one. A LB because I don't trust Luke Shaw. Young is able but limited.

With the World Cup and therefore missing players to start the League, slightly underwhelming transfers....it's understandable to be a bit downcast. I'm a bit concerned but optimistic enough because I believe in the manager and in the player's quality.

Expecting more of the same crap and no legit title challenge unless we sign another 3 quality players in this window. :(

Think Fred will just give us more solidity in midfield and more control/consistency overall. If someone gets injured we don't have to resort to fellaini or mctominay right away, we have 4 very good players to shuffle between (though concern is if we go a 3 man mid then only Pogba is a creative force out of the 4, with Fred being box to box). It gives us a better balance but not huge improvement if our options were on form anyway (which they rarely were).

I just can't wait for another loss to Brighton or a team of their ilk where we play like shite.

Who got promoted this season? We'll definitely lose to at least one of them.

Excited to see how the new coaching staff works, maybe we'll be better going forward.
Some may say that is delusional, but it is certainly possible that we may improve in attack.

I do think we need 2 more signings, an rw and a defender
Some may say that this is delusional, but it is quite possible that we make 2 more signings, before the window shuts.

yes, i am an optimistic cnut that thinks that Shaw finally will get his shit together, and stay fit.
Some may say.....
Naaa....this is absolutely delusional.
For 4 years, Shaw has been useless and there is absolutely nothing to suggest that the 5th year won't go the same way.
It's like the wife, who has cheated on you 4 times already, but in your mind, she won't do it a 5th time, so you give her yet another chance.
Sorry bud, but you lost me on this.

Will hiring Zidane make you optimistic? ;)
It will improve optimism for 1 year...then there will be calls for him to be sacked. Just as was the case with Jose and LVG (Moyes deserved what he got).
I want us to stick with Jose, but provide him with the men to get the job done. I don't feel that the board are serious about a title challenge and this is what irks me.

There wouldn’t be any optimism on here even if we went and signed Ramos, Sandro, Kroos and Mbappe in the next few weeks.
Mate, if we got those 4 players, the muppets would be on cloud nine....and so would I.
Jose would absolutely need to win the league with those player or he'd get the sack (or he'd resign). You can't have Kroos and Mbappe in your team and not win the league. That just isn't permissible.

A slight upgrade on the team and performances may be close to the mark sadly.
I find it hard to believe that Jose wouldn't be demanding upgrades in a few positions, especially defensively, so there must be action behind the scenes.

If you were the board, how much would you give him to overcome the City? Would you leave Mou to get players regardless the age profile?

PS. This is a possible topic for new thread.

If you're hiring a manager and keeping him, you should give him everything he needs, literally everything.

If you don't believe in his ideas or approach, sack him then and get another manager you believe in instead of not backing him in the market and leaving the team in nutshell.

Anyway I think the board is backing Mourinho well so far, but it's really illogical to think we shouldn't backup a current manager that the board is fine with to keep him for a 3rd season just because fans don't like his approach, a recipe for disaster. Not sure why anyone will want that to happen.

No board in the history of any club "give everything he needs" to manager. There are always limitations and restrictions.

During most seasons I rarely watch other teams play, unless it’s a big premier league or champions league game. In other words, games guaranteed to be good. Having watched the vast majority of the World Cup, enjoying way more than I thought I would, all I can say is we have really had to put up with some tumescent football since Fergie left. There have been glimmers of hope since then, with trophies masking a lot of the poor stuff we do, but we really are hard to enjoy from a purely footballing perspective. It’s because of this I’m not particularly optimistic, made even more so when considering some of the excellent players we have but knowing they’ll never play their best stuff under Jose. It’s all just a bit meh really for me, first time I’ve felt that way in 20 years following United.

You don't hire a manager then complain about his approach or the profile of players he prefers while you know all this from his previous clubs.

As long as you hire him, you believe in his appoach then you need to fully back him. Otherwise, sack him and get another manager that you believe in his approach and are willing to back.

It's simple, not science really.

Agree with this. Don't see us getting any closer to City - don't really feel that we've strengthened the squad, and even if we did I'm just not confident that Mourinho knows how to get the best out of the players we have, let alone new ones. Liverpool play good football, and they've really improved their squad depth (particularly midfield) in the summer. If they can get Allison too then I'd be surprised if they're not City's main competitors. Utd to finish 3rd or 4th but a long way off the title.

Well we had a fantastic second half of the season up until we downed tools so I'm optimistic in that sense.
I'm not optimistic that we will improve our excitement level but If Fred can lift our midfield and Sanchez kicks on after a summer off then why can't we pick up a few more points? Lukaku was able to kick on after he was nailed on to be a flop so let's see what happens.

Front 4 of Lukaku, Sanchez (on form), martial and Bale/Perisic yes.

If not then to be honest it’s going to be a meltdown year for Jose I feel. Signing fellaini on a new deal, lack of transfers and possible sale of martial... fans would turn on him if it’s the same eye sore like last season.

Fingers crossed

I expect us to do slightly better in the CL, not be so far behind the league leaders but as far as finished I don't expect a big improvement. 2nd place in the league, maybe a cup final and a quarter or semi final knockout in the CL isn't an unlikely season finish.

At the minute? Yes and no. We have talent coming through but unresolved issues that are coming to the fore. The market maybe destroyed but we are not aggressive enough. If fred gets an injury? We're back to square one. If Dalot takes time to settle? We're back to square one. Peresic may come an i'm sure he will boost us but at things stand? United would have been better off signing Ronaldo and they will face ALOT of heat if they don't get off to the right start. Sanchez missing part of the tour is poor planning/typical of the bs that should be a non issue. I think right now? We're in for a similar season - if not a slightly more challenging one.

"Fully back him" is a vague term. What does it mean? Does it mean that the board has to "give everything he needs" as showing as "fully"?
You back the manager, but there's no board in the history of the game would give "everything the manager needs". And I don't think any manager expecting that way also.

Even the City board doesn't give "everything he needs" to Pep. It's a balance of giving some investment, see how the manager does with the investment, then give him some more.

I think the board has been backing Mourinho good enough, as any big club would do.

I think I pretty much said previously I think the board backed Mourinho well so far so that's not the point of discussion.

The point of discussion is the logic of the board not signing the players the manager wants because of age profile or something like that, which is a straight recipe to a disaster.

So you hire a manager, then don't believe in his approach and don't agree on the profile of the players he wanted, so you don't sign them, than the manager moans about lack of transfers, the manager implodes with the team in a meltdown this season and gets sacked while blaming the board.

A straightforward way to destroy a season and just speaks poorly about the board not the manager in this case. If you don't agree on his approach or the profile of players he wants, why the hell hire him and pay him a giga salary of money ? It means the club is poorly managed and organized.

If you don't want the manager to be in control of the team, hire him as a football coach only and have a DOF that is responsible for determining the transfers needed, like Madrid.

But getting the manager then letting him ask for players then refuse them because you don't like their profile and don't sign anyone, how can't you see the consequences of this ?

You surely know the approach this manager has used throughout his career and the players he prefers so what's the surprise now? Don't act like you didn't know when you hired him.

In case of Mourinho we all know he's defensive oriented manager who depends on physicality and counters in his playstyle. The board knew that very well when they hired him. It's really not a surprise the way he sets the team to play in certain occasions or the players he prefers. It's known for everyone who watched some football. Same for Pep in City or any other big manager.

An no, City has provided Pep with everything he wanted, and he had a role in every transfer. City had no problem signing Bravo to be shifted to bench later, signing Nolito to sell him next summer or signing a 50m B.Silva to set on the bench. When they withdrew from Sanchez deal, Pep had a say in it. The only English club in which the manager isn't in good control is Chelsea.

If the board hires certain manager then that's because they think his approach and profile suits the club and when this manager asks for certain profile of players to be signed, the board is supposed to fully back him with this profile as they already believed in it when they hired him

Again, I think Ed did a very good job for Mourinho so far so I'm not talking about this specific case. I'm talking in general about your logic.

Not at all.
Fight between us, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal for 3rd and 4th place.
No chance in CL.
FA and League Cup, and possibly Europa League if we finish 3rd in CL group, our only chances of winning titles.
Mourinho melt down around christmas or sacked at the end of the season.

I’d bite your hand off for those results right now. Marginally less enthusiastic if we played absolute shit on a stick to achieve them but you’ve described a decent campaign.

Sad to say I'm expecting a Mou-implosion. Whether it was his choice or not, not improving our choices at full-back & RW will lead to him moaning about not having enough quality. It could start early, with the EPL window closing early. If the transfer window closed as normal, then we could at least address some issues in an emergency basis (I know not the best way to do it), but the team will have to hold on until January this time.

Now, it's possible that some players can revert to form (like Sanchez) and we could be in for a wild ride, but as currently constituted, I don't see it. Jose will probably revert to a very defensive program and lose the hearts & minds of several of his more creative players. If Jose weren't so reactive . . . . . .

The fact he hasn't imploded yet surprises me...............

This post is bang on.

He will implode, just when. And how quickly we can sort out his mess.

When you look at how many players Jose is not managing correctly it is alarming.

Imagine Klopp/Poch/Pep (&many more) with the young creative squad we have - they'd have us playing much better stuff.

The likes of Shaw - Martial - Rashford - Pogba - Lindelof - Bailly - Periera & a few others should be playing with confidence and the managers backing, instead all have been restricted to Jose's rigid style and almost hampered in development. Jose's track record is up there, we all know this. the Jose with a bit of passion and fire and attitude was the winner, The Jose we have today is glum, defensive, argumentative and looking dated. Look at what Klopp has done, addressed his issues with big additions. Jose begged Fellaini to stay.

We have the players, we just do not utilize them or coach them properly.

I hope the club have a plan for when Jose blows his top and forces the club to sack him for a pay day, been waiting for it from the day he arrived.

Am I too negative? I don't think so, this is realistic logic. The form Pogba showed for France, I don't think he will at utd in Jose's system. Jose will restrict him too much then whinge to the media as per usual

Not optimistic but hopeful. Don't expect us to do anything of note this season though, certainly don't think we'll win either the league or the UCL.
