Really? It's a term that has negative connotations based a person's skin colour.
I'd not heard of that before.

Does it? I would assume it was referencing someones weight. It's a term that has negative connotations based a person's skin colour.

It's a fairly new insult. By understanding that is used to describe white people when they get angry or emotionalReally?
I'd not heard of that before.
Would you rather the gaggle use discrimitory terms like 'gammon' instead?
Which games were you watching?pretty much a yawn fest. a pointless competition for most countries.. like Azerbijan and going to win it an get a Euros spot
england/croatia. sorry, it's still a meaningless friendly as far as I'm concerned. But I guess if we win the thing there will be calls to have southgate knightedWhich games were you watching?
Love watching England play at the moment.
Much like the World Cup, yesterdays win gave me the same buzz I get after a United win.
It wasn't too long ago that watching England helped my sleep schedule. Now we're actually exciting to watch.
You’re all on the rebound from United. Desperate to find a new band-wagon to latch onto, so you can fill that Fergie shaped hole in your heart. This won’t end well, mark my words.Yeah but Utd wins used to be a lot more common than England wins, now it's the opposite.
It wasn't played as a meaningless friendly though? Nor was it treated as such by either sides or the fans?england/croatia. sorry, it's still a meaningless friendly as far as I'm concerned. But I guess if we win the thing there will be calls to have southgate knighted
Gammon is a state of mind, not a skin colour. You can be a red faced old white man without being a gammonIt's a fairly new insult. By understanding that is used to describe white people when they get angry or emotional
As soon as we start accepting skin colour based insults, then i think we are in trouble as a society
I'm fecking Irish Pogue. I want to see England suffer. You’re all on the rebound from United. Desperate to find a new band-wagon to latch onto, so you can fill that Fergie shaped hole in your heart. This won’t end well, mark my words.

Oops. My bad.I'm fecking Irish Pogue. I want to see England suffer.
I've seen the term used in multiple ways, including those with a seemingly discrimitory and prejudiced intent. Just as I have seen with more 'traditional' racist slursGammon is a state of mind, not a skin colour. You can be a red faced old white man without being a gammon
Gammon refers solely to people with an unreasonably angry, entitled right wing outlook, who think PC’s gone mad and that everyone should do and act like it was in the good old days of common sense and casual racism.
It was invented specifically to insult this outlook, and to demonstrate that when you do offend people with specific unPC language, it has an impact on them. And it’s worked absolutely brilliantly, because - unsurprisingly - the very second they felt demeaned or insulted they all started crying about how unfair it was and how it should be banned for probably being racist, instantly demonstrating what a thin skinned bunch of snowflake hypocrits they are.
It’s all been a quite glorious success.
Also if you think it is a “white” slur (it isn’t) then I’m white. So whatever, I can say it. Gammon gammon gammon gammon gammon gammon gammon gammon gammon.
I hate it as much as I hate snowflake, but I've seen it used more by the white students as a put down to less educated white working class menI've seen the term used in multiple ways, including those with a seemingly discrimitory and prejudice intent. That was my impression, although I thought it referred to the sunburned hue of the said demographic when they are on holiday etc.a put down to less educated white working class men
From the guy who supposedly invented it.Id seen that collage of angry older gentlemen from the election episode of Question Time and to me it was a good visual representation of the kind of blokes you’d move tables in the pub to avoid. The kind that will complain about being persecuted (you can’t say anything, Easter is banned, poppies are banned, etc) without a shred of evidence for it.
So you hate the fans of basically every other major European country, as they were also colonial powers ? Spain because they ethnically cleansed most of South America ?It's almost as if one country was an aggressive conqueror and oppressor for centuries and the other one was on the receiving end.
Mighty grand of you to wish your former colony well whilst wondering what there could possibly be for them to begrudge about England.
Absolutely. Complete Gammonator.
It may have all started because a wall of red faced men all made exactly the same point on Question Time a while back, but it’s evolved quite a bit now.

So it’s to make fun of the working class then ? I bet the ones who use this word, most of them vote corbyn tooI hate it as much as I hate snowflake, but I've seen it used more by the white students as a put down to less educated white working class men
Only if you presume that holding distinctly gammony mindsets are a uniquely working class thing? Which is a pretty poor judgement of the working class if you ask me...Basically it’s belitting the working class then ?
I barely understand the class system in this country, but I’ve only ever seen it directed at the older guys down the pub who are bald and have folds in their neck that looks like ham and tattoos ? Maybe it’s because I work with uni students and they don’t use it properly ?Also you keep editing your comment it confuses me ahaOnly if you presume that holding distinctly gammony mindsets are a uniquely working class thing? Though of course right wing populism has always cloaked itself in this protective veneer of “working class revolt” from Mosley to Farage to Trump. All of whom are fecking gammon out the wazoo, and none of whom even remotely close to being working class.
(The original gammon was David Cameron for what it’s worth... being described as “C3PO made of gammon”)
Yeah sorry, I do that!I barely understand the class system in this country, but I’ve only ever seen it directed at the older guys down the pub who are bald and have folds in their neck that looks like ham ? Also you keep editing your comment it confuses me aha
I work with students doing Italian history so maybe it’s not a good demographic , it just seemed like another thing to belittle this “working class” which seems to happen a lot here and I haven’t ever really understood it. I should probably just stay out of it haha. It Italy it is much simpler : The Mafia and everyone else (just kidding...sort of)Yeah sorry, I do that!
There’s a crossover, sure, and it’s not like working class people can’t be prejudicial gammons, but it’s not what the word is solely focused on. And the desire to paint it like that is - to my mind - the type of establishment attempt so often used by the right wing to stoke those class divisions in an effort to dismiss legitimacy.
I mean, we’re talking about middle aged white men crying racism, FFS.
It’s cool. No harm in being inquisitive. And I’m sure in some instances it can and has been used like that.I work with students doing Italian history so maybe it’s not a good demographic , it just seemed like another thing to belittle this “working class” which seems to happen a lot here and I haven’t ever really understood it. No worries I am just a bit slow at reading English sometimes and I got stuck lol
Mate, I’m not even English and I found this annoying. I mean , is it not obvious the song is a bit of a piss take ? I think people were singing it ironically (is this the right word ?) as an average England side had gone so far, yet some treated it like people were signing an old war song or somethingAlso, the misconstruing of Three Lions as some kind of arrogant provocative anthem was weird and annoying, considering how intrinsically the completely opposite of that it actually was...
I mean, hate us for our long, horrible, violent Imperial history all you want. Or even our modern day delusional bigot-fuelled Brexit implosion... but don’t come at Three Lions, bro!
Ah I see, so it’s someone who doesn’t like immigranti, foreigners ? We have lots of these gammons in Italy then - pretty much everyoneIt’s cool. No harm in being inquisitive. And I’m sure in some instances it can and has been used like that.
But then a solidly upper middle class cigar chomping landlord who wears pink corduroy trousers and an open necked collar & cuff shirt and whinges about the youth of today wanting everything given to them whilst putting up the rent on his properties so he can afford another holiday.... is also very much a gammon.
There's a load of it in this forum because of the significant Irish presence on the board. It does rankle with a lot of them if England put in a decent sporting performance and you will get all manner of bigoted nonsense rearing it's head when they do. They pop up all over England threads moaning about the English and generally being insulting with the excuse that it's allowed because of Cromwell/Churchill/Den from Eastenders.I wouldn't expect people from other nations to cheer on England.
The vitriol and pettiness that some of the home nations fans display is beyond pathetic and crosses the line into plain old bigotry in my opinion.
There are a faction of the fans that do let us down. I agree with that and understand why that would rankle. I don't think it is healthy to judge a large group of people by their worst example, however. Again I would say that such an attitude is bigoted. The vast majority of England fans do not see following the national team as a 'time to dust off otherwise retired imperialist attitudes and pretend Britannia rules the waves'.
It’s essentially a left wing insult of the right wing. A sort of counteract to “snowflake” (as @Thunderhead alluded to) but given a human form.Ah I see, so it’s someone who doesn’t like immigranti, foreigners ? We have lots of these gammons in Italy then - pretty much everyone
Ah thank you I’m all caught up now, gammon on the right and snowflake on the left. My students will be so impressedIt’s essentially a left wing insult of the right wing. A sort of counteract to “snowflake” (as @Thunderhead alluded to) but given a human form.
I'm also clinging to the waggon. You’re all on the rebound from United. Desperate to find a new band-wagon to latch onto, so you can fill that Fergie shaped hole in your heart. This won’t end well, mark my words.
Could be worse, though, I’m currently having a passionate but ill-judged affair with rugby union. I feel dirty
Definitely the case, especially the Fergie shaped hole. England are playing with a lot of young players without much fear, there isn't a significant amount in common between the current England side and Fergie's United but that is at least one. You’re all on the rebound from United. Desperate to find a new band-wagon to latch onto, so you can fill that Fergie shaped hole in your heart. This won’t end well, mark my words.

It’s a disconcering reversal of the last 25 years. Southgate and England are fresh and vibrant. United have hired the big name, mercenary manager who makes no effort to hide his lack of connection to the club or city and have a team of under-performing players with big reputations (or price tags at least) playing out-dated football. Jose is United’s Capello.I've always support United and England pretty cuch equally. I try to watch every single game of each side and follow the youth sides.
It's a strange fact that I know much prefer watching England, that the England squad is United whilst the United squad is in disarray.
It's just weird.
He has been with City for a few years now. Last year he was basically just a back up LB and that's been the case this year toohe's been injured for a good portion of the season
