You are going to think Lukaku would be dropped for this? No chance, he is only one that can hold linkup and stronger than most CBs, it would allow inside forward like Rashford, Martial to go in without defender blocking them. If his first touch can be improved, he's the perfect striker for Ole's system.

Disappointed with this thread. Actually can’t wait to see him under a different manager.
This. If the style we played today was a sense of what's to come then he'll be fine. He actually plays very well interchanging short passes for Belgium with his fellow attackers before bursting into the box to finish.

Not sure how he's become such a figure of ridicule around here given his first season for us, it's pretty clear that his form has suffered alongside the whole team.

Time to load him off can never be more ripe. Winter is coming, bring in Icardi.
If that's not possible, bring in a left footed right winger, Jadon Sancho or infact we can even bring Januzaj back, that way we can keep Lukaku till summers.

If we see more of the style and ideas of what we saw today he’ll bang in goals for fun. There was a moment Rashford was slipped through and he was muscled off the ball and I was thinking if that was Lukaku there was no chance the defender was getting a cross him once he had that yard.

Plays well off the shoulder and should always have been used that way. I’m looking forward to what he is going to do when he returns because if we can get Shaw and Young up there providing width quickly he’ll rack them up.

Not even OGS's positive words is going to make him a footballer. He's got no touch and a few of those goals wouldn't have happened today with him in the side as he'd have lost the ball.

Bench fodder for me now. Feel for him what he's going through away from the football right now but I don't want him anywhere near this Utd team.

Lukaku HAS to get in shape in order to succeed. He’s really overweight I’m sorry but I’ve seen games of him at Everton & he was in peak condition. He also needs a boost of confidence which he’s lacking hugely to be honest but at this moment in time I don’t think he would fit in the starting lineup.

He'll get his chance and not playing isolated as the lone striker but being on the end of this attacking football....

I'm wondering if you can see this being a RVN type of situation, if we play football like this with Lukaku who can barely control a ball half the time I can't see him adapting or being a positive influence. RVN scored goals and he's one of my all time favourite players for United, but I think most people will agree, and Fergie would, that we played better as a unit when we had Saha and Rooney, instead of RVN. Either way, i don't want to see him play for us again to be honest..

Lukaku could be brilliant for us, just needs to be fitter and more mobile. His touch needs to improve but he's not and never will be a target man which is how he's been played for 18 months.

Today is the blue print, mobile front three with lots of interchangeable movement. Move the ball quicker and get shots off

He'll be a given chance too and rightly so.
In this system with everyone moving and trying, you would think the service will improve to him dramatically. There is a quality footballer in there, we'll see it as well. I agree.

I still think he is by far the best goalscorer in our team. If we can create chances for him he will score bags of goals. The only question is whether that extra goalscoring prowess is worth any faults in his general play. Something we won't know until we've seen him play in this system.

We're going to be creating so many more chances for him if we play like this, let him lose some bulk, and get some confidence back and he'll be 25 goals + a season for sure, but Rashford deserves a run for a few games as CF for now.

We need to remember it's a clean slate for all players, however, the marker has been set by Rashford and Martial. Great movement, pressing, dribbling and interchange today. They both deserve to start the next game, along with Lingard behind them.

For Lukkaku that means he needs to earn his way back into the team and adapt his game from the awful performances this season. For me, he has the furthest to cone as I think he has been our worst player by far this season, along with Valencia

You would think this was his debut season in the league the way some people go on. Yes he has been beyond horrid this season and I have been screaming for him to be benched for weeks and weeks myself but now Jose has gone I think he will be great, a lot better than last year where he was still above average. We have all seen what he has done in an attacking Roberto Martinez Everton and Belgium team, heck in the world cup the pundits were even creaming them selves over his link up play!

I love Rashford but I reckon Lukaku will be better than him up front in this new team, Wether he will be that much better that we should bench Rashford and not try to get most or our vast out lay on him back I'm not so sure.

RVN was one of the best in the world, one of the best strikers Utd have ever had and was capable of hitting 30-40 goals a season. It’s true we played through him when he was here, and in his last season he suffered as we played differently. However, Lukuku is not fit to lace his boots. We could play through him, and he’s only going to get 20 goals. RVN actually had good build up play, Lukuku offeres nothing if he doesn’t get a goal.

Can you imagine how Lukuku would have ruined the Martial goal today if he was involved at any point.

Oh without a doubt, i wasn't comparing them as players, because RVN is levels above Lukaku, but the situation reminds me somewhat of what we could have before long, in that Rashford and Martial I believe are vastly better in their overall play than Lukaku, whilst Lukaku maybe the better pure finisher, if we continue to play like we are today, and say maybe Pochettino comes in, Lukaku won't fit in these situations, he's no Harry Kane and he isn't as mobile and quick as Martial and Rashford. So just how when we started playing a bit different RVN suffered a bit and we seemed to be better with Saha and Rooney.

I think we are on the same page. The goals will get shared around without him, we were so fluid today. Great to see.

This... seriously people need to go look at him at the World Cup. He’s at his best with fluid moving football where he can use his strength and pace to destroy defenders.

I get the impression we will see a different beast under Ole!
We can also look at him ‘since’ the World Cup, where we created many chances for him that he didn’t score. And Belgium didn’t lay loads of chances on a plate for him anyway, that is a myth that keeps being pushed on here. He wasn’t fed chance after chance in the WC. He scored goals against the likes of Panama, and his control cost him against England I recall.

He'll get a chance but there's zero prospect of him being better than Rashford or Martial in this system. How many crosses did we put in the box today? Almost none. How would he have fared in the move for the third goal?

Even Lingard for the brief time he was striker looked better than Lukaku has all season and then some.

Perfect time to drop him for good, then offload him in the summer back to Everton.

I think he's in trouble. A fight on his hands to displace Rashford or Martial who were both excellent

Sorry if it's already been covered, but do we know why exactly Lukaku is away from the team on compassionate leave? For personal reasons we don't know?

Also, I'm curious to know if he's come out and said anything on social media after Mourinho's departure.

He is now playing for his future. He’s had it very comfortable under Jose. Now he needs to pull his finger out, lose some weight, get fitter and actually start playing when he’s given an opportunity. He will get matches, and I would love it if he actually starts putting in a good shift. We all know he’s not good enough for us, but we still need a contribution from him this season and if (big IF) he can out in some decent performances then he might get a transfer to a reasonable team in the summer.

The club didn't reveal so probably a family issue he doesn't want anyone to know.

Lets be honest, he may have got 1 goal today but he would've ruined all the fluidity, interchanging, quick passing and running up front.

I'd sell him in January if it meant getting it a Firmino type CF.

Sánchez? He’s a dynamic link player capable of scoring. Think he’d do much better with freedom.

He isn't strong. He is not able to hold the ball up (he gets easily dispossessed by smaller/lighter defenders). The ball bounces off of him, so he can't get involved in quick build up play.
He is unable to receive the ball and hold the ball up, due to his first touch, which is terrible. And let't not forget that he is overweight. Being overweight in the EPL is the kiss of death.
His strength is for the ball to be threaded past/behind him and he drops off the shoulder of the defender and chases the ball.

I'd be tempted to use Greenwood, to see just how well he plays in the senior team. If he does well, sell Lukaku in the Summer. No need for a replacement.

Oh and we have Sanchez, who is also able to play in the striker, role.
