When has that ever happened? His diva character was also going to create lots of problems in Juventus' hardworking and drama-intolerant dressing room according to some

Maybe people shouldn't believe in what the media wants them to believe.
Nobody at Juve is anywhere near as good as him. Dybala is probably not very happy but the rest are likely delighted they have weaponised their attack while removing their own kryptonite.

Maradona and Ronaldinho are a different proposition though. It's a shame because I can see Maradona exploiting a player like Cristiano to no end, more so than Messi. Remove the ego and look at me shit and they would get on like a house on fire.

With all do respect to Cafu, Dani Alves and messi understanding is the best ive ever seen on a right side, and with Xavi there too thats as strong as it gets in the time frame mentioned. Cristiano simply cant not be in the team, and Roberto Carlos is an upgrade on marcelo to make that side even more devastating. Xavi and iniesta is as good as it gets with the best DM of all time behind them and then the centre backs + goalkeeper is probably as good as it gets for this era. Add in Luis Ronaldo up front and yep, this is my favourite team of the years mentioned by a long shot.
Just remember to tell the two Ronaldos that they are meant to keep possession at all costs, none of this being direct bollocks.

Both have shown they can link up play to be fair.

It’s too scary not to work.

Crazy that people are choosing Scholes in the best CM’s of the last 40 years. He was amazing but slightly over rated by us United fans. Top 10 since 1980 arguably, but not top 5 imo.

Casillas

Cafu - Scirea - Baresi - Maldini

Rijkaard Xavi Matthaus

Messi C.Ron Maradona

I went for Casillas due the fact that he is the most successful goalkeeper of the lot since 1980 to now.

World Cup, 2 European Championships, 3 CL. I couldn’t really decide out of him, Buffon, Schmeichel, Kahn, but the trophy haul edged it for me.

Dybala is probably the Juve player that he gets along with the best, they’re even doing eachother’s celebrations when they score.

You really have a really wrong view of him if you believe there would be any ego problems in him playing with a team of greats.

I know it’s before the 80s but the player in history Ronaldo would best get along with isn’t Messi or Maradona, it’s Pele. A complete and multidimensional forward that would make for an insane partnership in the same mold Rooney and Benzema did and Mandzukic is currently doing.

A possible way to get Maradona, Messi and C..Ronaldo in the same team although you may as well replace CR7 with R9.

*Amoros/Zanetti would also be contenders for me. Having studied Cafu in depth.. I think as talented as he was, he wasn’t as all rounded as these three but it’s a subjective opinion.
Carlos for me is so underrated - absolute phenomenon down the left flank and not that bad at defending at all.. adds so much oomph down the left. Maldini is just as good but much more defensive and less gifted on ball.

Hate to see Platini miss out but he’s simply a step beneath Diego.

Xavi great as he was simply doesn’t have the all round game of Matthaus who is one of the most talented footballers of all time period.
Cant believe I forgot Kohler. Monster.

Can’t see how Keane is getting into World XIs.

Keane really? no Rijkaard, Matthaus, or Redondo?
Rijkaard would be good choice too, won't consider Matthaus or Redondo as that team is way too attacking, we need some cnut winning the midfield for us at all cost, then the rest could do their job.

Reason I choose Keane over Rijkaard is because, you know, Keane would break your leg, but Rijkaard would spit on your face.

First things first: Maradona is in it and that mean no Platini, which is a shame, but you wouldn't build a side to get the best out of Platini with the personnel available.

Maradona also means no tiki taka bollocks, which also makes sense since with the choice of personnel just go and outplay anyone.

The fullbacks are a shoe-in as a pair: Cafú and Carlos. You could contest either, maybe, but no arguments on an individual difference would make me break up the set.

The central defence is a bit trickier. Milan's defence stands head and shoulders over any other, but it didn't play with flying fullbacks. Still, Baresi and Maldini were so brilliant I know I can trust them, can't overlook them, and if you want the game closed out you just bring in Bergomi or Nesta as RCB for a forward and make it an impenetrable trio.

Rijkaard was a beast of a DM, and can drop back if Baresi wonders forward as a libero. Matthäus likewise. That pair are unlikely to get on well off the pitch, mind, but I can't see that affecting them on the pitch.

Messi has to be there and slots in nicely at RWF. Ronaldinho doesn't have to be there but I can't see Cristiano fitting in and I'd rather watch Goofy taking the piss out of defenders.

Van Basten to me is the gold standard as a CF in this period. Ronaldo was extraordinary, but what he brings to the table is well covered elsewhere and what is needed van Basten is perfect for.

Goalie settled by making it an Italian unit. Could easily be Schmeichel or Kahn, but Buffon gets the nod.

This is my team except Schmeichel over Buffon and Ronaldo over Van Basten.

Schmeichel because i've never seen anyone command a defensive unit like him.

Ronaldo because he was just as good as Van Basten in the box and brought a whole lot more outside it.

You would need Cafu and Carlos because you won't get much width from Ronaldinho and Messi.

Big fan of Maldini, Nesta, Viera, Rio, Redondo, Ronaldinho, J Zanetti, Schemeichal, and Modric but can’t get them in.

I said maybe, because he was subbed for a few games. Didn't imply a personality clash, just pointed out who may be an exception, for different reasons.

You really have a really wrong view of him if you believe there would be any ego problems in him playing with a team of greats.

I agree, Pelé is the GOAT most similar to him. A football machine. A physique chiselled to perfection, and the temperament of an efficient and devastating all-round player with a singular focus on winning.

Pelé would have zero issues with him. I'm not saying it is all down to Cristiano, it's also about what wasn't quite right about Maradona and Goofy (which ultimately kept them at the top for a far shorter period than either of CR and Pelé).

Though task... if I'm able to divide this team into areas I would say that 80/90s Milan has the best deffensive line, 00/10s Barcelona has the best midfield and 90/00s Brazil has the best attacking line. And that still leaves out Maradona, Zidane, Cafu, Platini, Davids, Lahm, Laudrup, Van Basten, Messi, C.Ronaldo and pretty much all of Real Madrid who won 7 CL in this period.

My 23 squad (with starters and replacements)

Buffon (Neuer/Kahn)
-----------------
Cafu (Lahm)
Cannavaro (Nesta)
Baresi (Puyol)
Maldini (R.Carlos)
-----------------
Matthaus (Rijkaard)
Zidane (Xavi)
Maradona (Iniesta)
Messi (Laudrup)
----------------
Ronaldo (Van Basten)
Romario (C.Ronaldo)

Head Coach: Sacchi/SAF.

On a United forum, it's surprising he's not in more. United have been one of the top teams in Europe through a large period of the era listed here and Keane was the best player at the club for at least 7 or 8 years through that era.

probably hugely biased on Boateng and Schweinsteiger, but in their peak season(s) they were both fantastic and incredibly complete players. No Players from Seria A included because i've seen way too little of them.

Doesn’t matter. It’s ludicrous to stick him in. World class player undoubtedly but ahead of Rijkaard and Matthaus - that is just being silly.

Don't get all the love for Roberto Carlos. Was he that good?
Brilliant. Go through his old footage when you have the time - shit tonnes of it on YouTube - imagine a slightly less skilful Marcelo who could defend (only struggled as an old man against Messi but handled likes of Figo well) and more aggressive and a better goal scorer. He was a proper champion, super mentality and got up and down all day long with quality in every aspect of his game. In the modern game he would be even more at home whereas Maldini would struggle in modern day set ups.

Carlos has become remembered as a free kick glory whore but it was just one small component of his game.

IMO he, Maldini, Krol and Facchetti
are the best left backs the game has seen. Breitner for me was most gifted but he didn’t spend all his career there but he might well have ended up the best of them all.

Really tough on:

- Laudrup (not seeing many people including him by the way - I know there were better players, but still)
- Xavi
- Keane
- Alves
- Desailly
- Nesta

Who would basically make up the bench/squad

You've named 2 players, both from an earlier era. Even if they are better, it's possible anyone picking Keane is younger.

I really rated Matthaus but his spell in Italy was overshadowed by a far superior Milan team. He was also a more offensive player than Keane. Rijkaard played a reasonable period of his career at centre back.

There is nothing even slightly ridiculous about people picking Keane. Rio Ferdinand being in multiple teams didn't raise an eyebrow.

Isn't the premise best players after 1980

So 3 years after beckenbauer had quit international football... After he had been playing in the USA for 2 years

And there has been no better centre back since...

Aye, in a thread where other midfielders like Makelele, Scholes, Gerrard, Seedorf, Modric, Schweinsteiger, Vieira and Kroos have all been included in teams here without comment, it's a bit depressing that people think that Keane is a ridiculous inclusion.

Rijkaard played a reasonable period of his career at centre back.
Aside from the weirdly brilliant Koeman-Rijkaard duo in 1988 I don’t think that he had spend a lot of his peak there? I know that he played there for van Gaal’s Ajax, but it’s like saying that Gullit or Boniek are sweepers because they played there near the end of their career.

With Desailly, for example, I would’ve understood this remark, but Rijkaard was undoubtedly a midfielder first (and second).
