Yea, let our best player walk away for nothing when we are already struggling to close the gap between us and City. But atleast the moral high ground will be fun.

Until we look at our bench and see 2 of the top 5 paid players in the league sitting there doing bugger all
I wouldn’t call him our best player... just our best goalie.

There’s a difference between players and goalies, for me at least. I dislike when people say De Gea is our best player, as if his position can be compared to Paul Pogba’s or vice versa.

We should totally pay him though. He has stayed with us thru some shitty seasons, and is one of the top keepers in the world

The exact numbers aren’t as important, my point was that a new quality keeper is going to be more expensive than re-signing de Gea.
It won't even come close? Signing a keeper for 150k a year instead of 350k saves around 7m per yer over a 5 (probably) year contract on its own. I'd also wager his replacement wouldn't cost more than selling him

It probably would considering that de Gea’s contract is about to run down.

What were we getting last time from Madrid? 35m all in? And that was a one club market. And that is before the keeper market blew up.
Hazards contract is running down and I'm seeing quotes of 100m. Eriksen has some monstrous quotes to his name.

350k for a GK? Mental !!
And he wants more ? Wow :houllier:

Since Alexis crazy deal, Mendes and Raiola are lurking...

I can see Raiola asking for a 500k deal soon...

I genuinely think Mendes would struggle to come up with a figure I'd balk at paying. £350k? No problem at all.

Also, in a world where Kepa cost 71m, I hate to think how thoroughly screwed over we'd get in the process of replacing De Gea. Especially given that replacement will definitely be a worse player.

If he asked for £350k a week and we agreed, now he's asking for more then we should 100% shake his hand and thank him for his service and tell him to enjoy Paris.

I know he's been our best player these past 5 years and that in itself is shocking for United, invest properly so we dont have to rely on a keeper so much, it's about time United stop setting bad examples with these players (Rooney, Sanchez etc).

For those wondering if we can/should swing it because of our wages. What about Juve who have recently added Ronaldo's wages and Ramsey's crazy contract.

PSG are more likely opposition but I'm convinced we are in pole position and he's staying. He won't leave over a small % of different and we wouldn't lose him over that. It's negotiations and everyone is likely on the same page as to what they want the final destination to be: Manchester United.

-Remove Ed from all footballing matters
-Acknowledge that the club has been run very poorly in terms of contracts and recruitment/sales
-Explain the Sanchez deal was the pinnacle of the club's stupidity and that he'll be moved out

Then try again.

"Give him whatever he wants" is not a sustainable strategy when trying to get a player to sign a new contract. He should be among our highest earners but there has to be a limit. Mendes is obviously sensing weakness and trying to feck us over. He knows how bad it will look if DDG leaves because we couldn't match his salary demands.

I do hope we stay somewhat strong and don't cave in completely as it sets a terrible precedent. If DDG really isn't happy staying even after being made our highest paid player, then it's probably best he does leave. But I do think this is just an agent playing games and the player is happy to stay.

We pay Kane 200k a week, what would the equivalent wage for a club with the income of United be?

I'm afraid it's the Fellaini contract that has set a precedent more than the Sanchez transfer. Run your contract down and eventually the club will fold.

That Sanchez 500k per week figure if true looks better and better by the minute. Especially if we are being held to ransom by other players who want to use that as a benchmark even though it is clear that that figure in no way represents his value to us, making it an anomaly.

Only if the club want you to stay, would you prefer if we went back to the time the club had all the power.

I'm not saying that. I'm saying eventually, Dave and Mendes know the club will give them what they want.

I love Dave, he's given us so many beautiful and important performances and has been such a professional in our worst times. However, if he's looking for more than £350k a week he can look elsewhere as far as I'm concerned. The average top wage for a keeper is £120k ffs.

Sell him to PSG and get in Oblak who is just as good.

He should be our highest earner based on his incredible performances over a long period of time plus the fact he's still got a long time left at the top. Instead it's Sanchez, which is laughable.

£350k is more than a good salary for a keeper even though he is one of the best in the world.

maybe my math is wrong but we can save £10mn a year by getting in Oblak or another keeper and paying them £150k pw.

Also De gea wont go for free as we have him for another year. I can see us get £50mn in the summer atleast.

£50m from sale + £50m salary savings (5yr contract) that is £100m to buy an adequate replacement.

If we can get rid of Sanchez or Lukaku in the summer that should be sorted really. It's not wrong to him to demand the same salary of Sanchez. He's been our only consistenly world class player since fergie retired. Not sure which replacements we could get for him at the moment either.

Love DDG to bits and imo he's the best GK in the world, but if true this is getting ugly. £350k is shiitload of money wages for a GK but indication is he either wants more or he's waiting to see will we be competitive and in for big trophies come next season.

I'll take the latter for now.

No winters here!
No club is going to pay him 400k a week on top of spending a transfer fee of 30M to 50M (as only 1 year left). So he can try to run down his contract to get 400k elsewhere after a year. But we can also threaten to freeze him out of the first team making things go back to square one.

So who will pay 400k on top of a decent transfer fee? If PSG can, he is welcome to go there. As an added bonus he can probably sleep in half their matches and no one will notice.

We should keep 350k offer on the table, and maybe add bit more on loyalty bonus or something

Eurgh... this is getting old now. I thought £350K was silly money but where will it end? This is another symptom of the lack of success we've had. No way De Gea would be doing this if we were winning trophies. We have to get back to the top level so we can offer players more than just a high wage or this will keep happening.

375K per week for 5 years = £97.5MIL

If we bought a top keeper it would cost 75MIL
Wages at 200K per week for 5 years = 52MIL
Total = 127MIL.

So it still works out cheaper to give De Gea the contract and with less risk involved in signing a new keeper.

The club is run poorly both financially and on the pitch. We need a DoF, a great structure in place for the summer and a big transfer kitty so we can start challenging next year. Penny pinching ultimately leads to a loss in profits, surely the owners see that by now.

Oblak would cost a lot more than 150k a week imo. It’s well known De Gea is on more than double that, and his agent will want his player to get something in the same ballpark. Certainly not 200k less, anyway.

I don't see how we will come out the winner with losing the best goalkeeper in the world to PSG. It does not really bode well for our ambition. We have tons of overpaid average players in the squad. De Gea is not one of them. Considering if we have not competed for any major trophies during his time here, it's not surprising he's asking for a ton of money.

I'll be honest, when I read this latest story I partly agreed with you, but we don't want to become the new Arsenal. I think letting him go now would be more damaging in the long run. What is crucial now is the club gets its collective sh*t together this summer so we can avoid it happening in the future.

the only problem here is that you've just pulled figures out of the air. No idea what a keeper would cost or what we would have to pay him. Sorry but how can anyone "need" more than £350k a week? I want DDG to stay, I want him to be well paid for his work and I think goalkeepers are as important as outfield players but just how much is he asking for?
