I'd have taken 0-1 before the game. Some promising performances from a few players who could be part of our long term plan. Half our team just aren't good enough for this level though, some can improve over time, other obvious ones need binned. That's what we get from years of mismanagement. It's a long way back to the top with the squad we have so we just need to buckle up and pray for a good transfer window.

Played well enough but can't help but think it's a missed opportunity given how Barca didn't seem at the races. I'd like to have gone to VAR for at least one review on our penalty shouts but hey, it's Barcelona so that's unlikely.

I felt Dalot was good and I'd be all for him at RB over Young. I'd be for Darmian over Young tbh. Unfortunately Shaw is suspended. I felt he was good today. Fred was MOTM with McTominay not far off. Pogba nowhere near as bad as people are saying. Our attack looked inept though. I'd say all we've got to do is win a football match at their place 1-0 or 2-1 but hard to see us getting two IMO.

Some of the comments from PlayStation generation on here ffs.

The manager took over when the whole club was on its arse has been in charge for 3 months and we have just gone toe to toe with barca in the CL last 8 and lost by an 1 own goal but played well.

Don't forget we where totally schooled by this team on 2 CL finals but no barca fan would have begrudged us a point tonight.
Well said.

We all know this squad is nowhere near the finished article. Surely to feck that’s obvious?! Taking that into account we clearly punched above our weight tonight. Which is all you can hope for from a manager really.

Pogba gets judged by entirely different standards to other players, he was in now way poor. Best player on the pitch in the first half and was certainly still our biggest threat in the second. People literally expect him to take on the entire team and score a hattrick every game
I was going to post something similar. He was not poor at all. Some people need to stop thinking this is entertainment, or a Playstation game. These games are coming thick and fast for all top sides in Europe. Look at Messi tonight. Busquets was rubbish. Man City last night.. and look at Porto.

Pogba played ok... in a game when nearly everyone was ok. Leave the guy alone, what do you want from him, every match???

Ashley Young was v poor. Embarrasing at times. Lukaku and Rashford also lacked much. They seemed a little lost as it goes. Martial too when he came on.

Fred has his moments, but the pace and style of these games suit him. McTominay was superb. Our defenders all seemed nervous.

Man, we need some guts, real guts in that squad. Too many timid players.

Switch Young for Dalot and play Martial where Dalot is? Would that work? Couldn't be worse than having Young on the pitch.

Thought we played quite well and probably deserved a draw. It was a lack of cutting edge that did us. Fred and Scott were ace all night, Pogba and Rashford were very good in 1st half but struggled in the 2nd, probs due to Barca changing tact. Would have liked better delivery from Young and Dalot.
Otherwise I felt we did very well, good tactics, positive on the ball.

He's not wrong?
Well yes he's.

Barca played in second gear and hardly needed to break a sweat or put much effort to get an away win in a CL tie. We hardly threatened them, had no shots on target and barely did anything to force Barca out of their second gear.

Thought it was really poor from United not properly going for it last 15. Barcelona were playing as poor as they ever will and they showed zero willingness to counter (Messi looked tired and Suarez was knackered). The risk of it going 2-0 wasn't that big with how the game was going. Think it would have been worthwhile throwing more at them at the end and really pushing for the 1-1. There's a huge difference between needing to score and needing to win away.

Thought Dalot was very good today.

Let me tell you something about our squad - we have Dalot. And actually he was on the pitch and should have just been switched over to the other side.
That would've meant Young had to step in as RCB and Shaw would've not man marked Messi and that means shoot ourselves in the leg. We just lack quality in certain positions. I think this was the optimal squad we could've came up with.

Yeah we are but exceeding expectations in my opinion.
But we have a fantastic record in big games for quite a while now, its the games v the middling sides that we need to improve on.
I have more confidence going into the Camp Nou than playing Wolves away. We are more than competing v top sides.

0-0 would be a fair reflection of the game. We might've had a chance of getting a score draw over there.

A lot of the players did well to respond but there was actually nothing to fear. The mentality and pressing has to be there from the off.

Would've preferred Martial down the middle for the last 30 mins. He's very good in front of goal but hardly ever gets the chance. With Rashford coming back from injury and Lukaku being Lukaku, martial would've offered more threat I feel.

Lukaku did well capitalizing on PSG mistakes but again in general play he was not offering anything tonight. His good friend Pogba was the same. Our two big money buys of 75 million and 90 million had hardly any impact and were outshone by the likes of McTominay.

We desperately need someone other than Young, it's a position that can see a lot of the ball in the oppositions half. We need good quality delivery from there. It's just comical how long this has gone at United.

More positive than I was expecting in here. I didn't think Barca had to do much to win.

Thought Barca were the better team despite playing below their usual level. Messi was way below level but still made the pre-assist with a nice pass.

Also Barca had more possession, looked largely in control and defensively denied United anything, while still creating more chances and the better chances.

Match went as I expected: Barcelona scoring one + Man Utd. being able to both defend-survive and attack-create chances.

Those who claimed Barcelona was going to tear Old Trafford down are either scousers or people who have not watched enough Barça's games this season: 18-19 Barça are just...good-solid, not great. And that's why I consider them favorites: they don't have any highs, but no lows either (as long as Umtiti remains in the bench for the remainder of the campaign).

Match could have easily ended 1-1. Second Barça goal prevented by De Gea. United goal prevented by Semedo (surprisingly solid-focused) and Piqué. Very average game by Messi. Arthur controlled the pace like Iniesta used to.

Btw: first victory by Barça in OT in their entire history, if I'm not mistaken.

We didn't need three at the back late in the game. Could have easily switched Dalot to the right and moved Shaw to LB.

Showed them too much respect before the goal.
Ole set us up very well and with a little composure we should have won it.
McTominay and especially Fred were brilliant for the whole match, While Pogba was good in the first half but switched off a bit in the second.
It was a good performance by everyone except for Young who shouldn't be anywhere near the team and lukaku.
Can't wait for the return leg, start with Martial in place of Lukaku and hope Sanchez is back, better having him as an option coming off the bench than lingard.

Honestly, i expected far worse so i am pleased with the result. I do not expect this team to go through to the semis, we are miles off Barcelona in terms of quality and that gap was not apparent tonight. Okay, we looked simple and basic but we still created chances and held the ball well. We pressed and defended pretty well. Our team is off form, injuries catching up with us and confidence is flaky. We have really bad fitness levels, i fully expected to lose 3 0. We still are in it when we go to Barcelona, but obviously need a miracle. I am not too bothered if we get knocked out losing 2 0 on aggregate. Tonight young was horrendous, ole should be play Dalot there. Pogba was rubbish as he has been for weeks. Rashford was awful, shooting everywhere. Lukaku was not bad but largely because he barely touched the ball. I was impressed with Fred and Mctominay. Both put in a mature performance and seem to work well together. I also thought shaw was good. I would not be too downbeat with the result, many on here expected far worse. At least we didnt get derailed like we did against PSG.

We're shite. We're a fallen giant that now gets patted on the head and given a gold star for turning up and trying. This isn't Manchester United. This is a sad empty husk of the great club we once were.
Is this assessment before 2009 or after? If the 2009 team turned up like tonight, maybe we wouldn’t have lost that final.

I strongly disagree. The moment Lingard walked on the field and replaced Dalot we lost control of the game.

Couldn't agree more.

Unironically our best performance against Barcelona since 2008.

This Barcelona is nowhere NEAR that 2010 side though. When Messi retires they're gonna have some big problems.

Not as bad as it could have been. I thought Shaw could have done better for the goal, he should have seen and been closer to the man at the back post.

Fred was trying to get there but too late so probably a lack of communication and not quite getting the system right. Dalot could have scored (I hate saying "should have", especially for a defender) and we'd have deserved it. We took the game to them which was great so a bit more composure and luck next week and we'll be fine. Nobody expected us to win at Juve or PSG so come on!!!

I thought the back 3 played pretty well, especially Shaw, and the midfield 3 had good games with Fred MOTM for me. However Young, Rashford and Lukaku were so poor that when we got into good positions we offered very little. I feel a 0-0 would have been a fair result but it wasn't to be.

Three points I'll take from that game:

1. Their best players are a level above our best, espescially Messi up front and Pique in defense.

2. They don't have the obvious weak spots that we have, i.e. Ashley Young

3. Most of their players have done the same attacking routine for a decade, most of ours have played under managers without any attacking routine for the last 3-6 years.

I think we can remedy this within 2-3 seasons if we get the right personel in, and start developing our attacking play. Hope Solskjær is the man to do it.

1-0 isn't a bad result. Maybe players will be fit for the tie at the Nou camp. The team didn't show anything we haven't seen before.

Pogba goes missing - check
Inconsistent performance by young forwards - check
Young poor at RB - check

First 10-15 minutes was embarrassing. After that we were the better team, just lack the quality.

  • Manchester United have lost four of their last six Champions League home games, as many as they had in their previous 71 at Old Trafford in the competition (W51 D16 L4).

Can't fault loads with gameplan ,discipline. Dalot and rashford should have both scored, and our crossing from the right was zero out of ten. Our 'best' player was outplayed by mctominay Fred and all Barcelona midfielders. But he had a good laugh with vidal at full time so it's all good
I thought Pogba was our best player first half - the only player in the team really, along with perhaps Dalot, who showed consistent quality on the ball, and he caused Barcelona a fair bit of bother. Less so second half - complicated a few moments early on conceding possession carelessly, was generally quieter and some frustration kicked in near the end with him pressing impatiently and taking himself out the game.

Why 5-3-2 the whole match? Why Young the whole match? Why subbing Lukaku AND Rashford? Why be content with 0-1 at home? So many whys.

Wrt our attacking trio - they get away with inconsistency because they don't have enough competition. When we're not playing Lukaku Rashford Martial and Lingard (we rotate between these 4 for 3 places) who do we go to as backup? Sanchez, Mata, Periera. Utter dross. The other guys know that a poor game won't result in losing a place to a competitor. The same is true for Pogba.
