I think we was linked to him before he went to Monaco, or was that Dendoncker ?

Isn't he replacing matic?
No way.

McTomminay is a good player, but he wouldn't be able to protect out back 4 while also dictating the tempo of our game. His passing range is nowhere close enough to what we need in that position. He should fight for one of the supporting roles in midfield vs Fred.

I would prefer we replace Matic with someone like Ruben Neves (only 22 years old) or similar.

Doucoure offers the same type of box to box energy.

Would love Verratti but his injury record is a little disconcerting. Would take him if PSG wanted to do a straight swap for Martial though

I haven't seen enough of Doucoure. Is he as good as Ndombele?

A deep-lying playmaker like him is a good option, he is really talented. But I think Ole will go for someone like Rice.

It is slightly concerning that we aren't really been linked to anyone on midfield.

It's crazy how much we need this summer, but I'd say midfield is the most important area to strengthen now.

I reckon Ole identifies McTominay as the player to replace Herrera anyway.

Would it make sense for us to go and get Bruno and Tielemens? Would Tielemens forge a formidable partnership with Pogba in a double pivot and Bruno could play in the No. 10 role?

He should certainly get a chance. I'm also wondering if, as a final chance to save his OT career, Phil Jones might be pressed into service as a midfield destroyer. I'd watch it for a couple of matches out of sheer fascination.

He might destroy himself.

Only if we play diamond formation. So it would be Fernandes, Pogba, Tielemans and a CDM. I found a bit difficult to see Ole playing Pogba in a midfield of 2.

Was a bit tongue in cheek. We badly nedd matic replaced but now we've lost Herrera we will overlook matic imo and only bring in one player

Nicolo Barella.
This guy is the one. If Ole seriously wants us to be amongst the hardest working teams in the league and play with a high tempo ala Liverpool. Then signing this guy would be a very good start. He offers everything that you want in a team that wants to set the tempo.

I remember watching obligatory YouTube vids of that Roma kid...zaniolo?

I thought he looked good, brave, quick, direct, it's gone a little quiet with him lately!

Especially if we are going to accommodate Pogba in the side, we can’t just replace Herrera with say, Neves. Barella will give us the fight and tenacity we will miss from Herrera, while being a better footballer. Something about his mentality appeals to me too, think he is in the De Rossi mould, potential leader. I think him and Rice together have that right mentality and would help.

Zaniolo is a star. If we got a very good DM, I think he could play with Pogba. I’m just not sure, as it stands, that we wouldn’t be too defensively open with him, Pogba and Matic.

He’s been linked to Spurs quite a bit lately, but he reminds me of Kevin De Bruyne in many ways. Doesn’t really play Cm now but I think he’d end up there.

Neves just doesn't fit into a high octane, high tempo, heavy pressing side. Would be a very bad move.

Rice also looks the correct profile of player with and without the ball. His driving runs from midfield would be a huge asset. Barella and Rice behind Pogba would be the way forward. Garner and Gomes could potentially be the back ups to give us some versatility if required.

If we are to replace Herrera, we need someone who is dynamic, presses well and is a good reader of the game.

N'Dombele
Barella
Partey
Saul
Bruno Fernades, who could possibly play deeper.

Personally think we need to sign at least 2 midfielders now that Herrera has confirmed he's leaving, like others have said if Pogba decides he's had enough then we will need to sign 3 which looks highly unlikely when we have other pressing areas of concern too

i believe mctominay should be our first choice in centre mid.. matic and fred can share that anchoring role for time being. bring in maddison or ruben neves for pogba. start bringing garner through mata is still there too.

midfield not really our problem its sorting out the back 4 its 6 years since fergie left and still our back four has smalling jones young etc in. i dont get paid millions a year but even i can see thats the problem.

Wouldn't mind seeing us pick up the likes of Tielemans, Rabiot, Ndidi or Neves for our midfield. Players with great potential who won't break the bank.
We need to move on from trying to sign world class superstars, it hasn't worked. Sanchez has been the biggest flop ever and has destroyed the wage structure at the club which is creating issues as others want similar pay now.

like the idea of tielemens myself.
united saying ready made world class players isnt that successful. bar cantona and van persie isnt too many others even van nistelrooy and stam and yorke were still growing

Has to be Rabiot for me, brilliant 8 that can cover defensively like Herrera but will give us so much more on the ball and he's bloody free. He's press resistant, can pass forward, help in build up and has good athleticism to cover ground the middle area. If we pair him with a DM like Rice we'd be really solid.

Mctominay can be the replacement. We badly need better right and left backs because Young and Shaw aren't going to get us to the title.

Could agree more. With Herrera going and Matic being crap, we need 2 to midfielders to replace them and with Rabiot being free it makes too much sense to get him in. Hes almost a carbon copy of Herrera regarding work rate and he can play that's for sure. Hes stronger than Herrera too.

herrera was a rotational player why the feck we looking replacements??
Exactly. Herrera has been one of our most important players according to the people on here.

Mctominay has already replaced him IMO, but we need to bring in a midfielder that can play in the Matic's position.

It appears Ole prefers Mctominay more high up the pitch and I'm not sure if Fred is comfortable playing in the deep role either.

McTominay and Fred are very different from Matic.

I think the term 'DM' is woefully inadequate in general. But I presume that video games have baked the idea of that position into the minds of football fans around the world.

The truth is that Matic is the ONLY player in the squad who defends the space behind him. McTominay and Fred and primarily midfileders who defend the space in front of them. You can't just look at tackling/intercepting stats to judge that.

I'm in favour of bringing in an upgrade on Matic. But if we were to sell him, we'd need to buy two. That makes no sense. I'd go for Rice, with Matic as backup.
