I would have thought that to manage one of the world's biggest sporting institutions, at the very least the candidate would have a track record of winning major domestic and European trophies. Fergie had won a few titles with Aberdeen as well as the Cup-Winners-Cup so, coming into the job, he had far more experience than Big Ron did when he took over from Sexton (whose own CV was better also than Ron's).
Not always true. Conte, Pep, Zidane didn't have anyone trophies on their CV. IIRC Allegri too even he took over Milan.

We need managers with good ideas on how to improve team, not just good CV. Whether that's Ole is something we have to wait and see. He might be a big hit or a bust but we shouldn't just select managers based on CV. Btw this also eliminates Poch who is without doubt top 3 managers in the league.

The biggest mistake of Woodwards reign and its going to cost us dearly next season if he doesn’t get rid of him immediately. Please sack him now...,
I agree tbh. I like Ole and want him to succeed but I can't see it really. This rebuild would be a monumental task even for a top manager. Look how long Klopp has taken to get Liverpool where they are, he's been at the club since 2014! If Ole fails and he gets fired next season we'll have wasted a lot of time the club can't get back and will have to start all over again. I'd rather have an accomplished manager in charge. Success won't come immediately but it will eventually. Pochettino is better equipped for this.

Can you imagine the message it will send out to world football if we sacked Ole without him signing a single player?

Do United fans truly believe that would not affect of who will be interested in becoming Manchester United manager and the players who may want to sign?

There’s being ruthless and then there’s just straight up OTT.

Will it work out with Ole? I don’t know, there’s a risk but there’s a risk with all appointments.

Like it or not he’s our manager and for the time being deserves a chance to shape his team, sacking him now is crazy talk.

You never know he might actually turn out to be a good manager and his ideas actually work, no one here knows the future for sure.

Either way it’s not the end of the world, we’re all grown men, we need to relax with all this emotional posts, you would think Ole was a mass murderer or something the way a lot of you turned on him.

It’s very sad, I knew United fans would turn on him but I do wish him the best and I hope he proves so many of you wrong next season.

Give Ole the pre-season he craves (making United much fitter and able to implement the pressing game without collapsing into an injury-fest) and the opportunity to shape his squad with at the transfers. Only then will we know if he can implement his vision and do the job.

We need a massive rebuild. There are other players to clear out before Jones and Young. I want Young to leave but he will be useful next season as a backup to multiple positions during this mass clear out transition phase. Players like Rojo, Valenica, Sanchez, Damian etc need to go first that is four players there add Fellaini and Herrera that is 6 players.

So my clear out is as follows.

Summer 1: Fellaini, Herrera,Valencia, Rojo, Damian, Sanchez
Summer 2: Young, Jones, Lukaku, Matic, Mata, Bailly
Summer 3: We have to re assess
A very sensible post. A load of posters lost their sh@t when we announced contract renewals for the likes of Jones, Smalling & Young but to me it was obvious that they were sticking around as squad options mainly because of their long term presence at the club. Despite their drawbacks they're all no worse than Bailly and Rojo, with the added bonus that they've won the league at United being there at the end of Fergie's tenure. I'd bet the three of them won't be at United for much longer than three-to-four transfer windows.

Assuming both De Gea and Pogba stay and knowing that Herrera and Valencia have left.

This Summer: Rojo, Darmian, Mata, Sanchez and one of Lukaku/Martial.
Next Summer: Bailly, Lukaku/Martial, Perreira, Jones or Smalling, Young.

Using GoT analogies to describe our predicament:

Manchester United is King's Landing, Ole is Jon wandering around with a dazed expression not knowing what to do, Daenerys is Glazer and the Dragon is Ed Woodward pretty much

For all the talk of the structure being wrong etc, is it not just a case of him buying 5-6 decent players, working a formation out, and simple as that?
They don't all have to be 100m signings.

Or is that too simple?
For a good manager it's that simple unfortunately we are not good at appointing good managers.

We had arguably the most 'qualified' person we could get before Solskjaer. There's no guarantees with anyone, these players are average and will get average results.
Not really we had a manager who was on the brink of the past-it category.

Back him, of course. If Woodie were to sack Ole now, we would be a joke of a club.

Positives:
Valencia hardly played after Ole took over.
Fellaini were shipped out.
Lukakus role as the untouchable first choice striker is over.
Lindelöf could actually play football.
Fred isn't totally shait, but it still looks like we paid 3 or 4 times his actual value.
Youngsters will get their chances.

Negatives:
The end of the season.
Martial's lack of everything.
Pogba drop in form.
Still putting Young up for all corners.
Not giving DDG a rest for a few games when he clearly was out of it.
Is Rojo still here?!

LVG spent £320M over two years.
Mourinho spent £400M over three. And Mourinho pretty much gave up on all his signings but Lukaku and Matic.
Solskjaer spent zero so far.

Back him. Simple as that for me. The only reason we would possibly go the other way is if Poch picks up the phone and says he will force his way out of Spurs and join us within a week of the CL final no matter the result.

I do not see us sacking him now and then hunting for a manager, thus delaying players sales and purchases even further.

What we need to do now is to lay the foundations for improvement by binning off the deadwood and trouble makers, and start the rebuild with the players who have the right attitude and show that desire on the pitch. If Ole still fails, then I would hope that the job is easier for the next man through the door.

Absolutely back him. Get someone else in now, and they will want to analyse everyone in tbe squad before making any changes. In other words, all the deadwood will end up staying at least January.

Also, a couple of things that people don't realise at all is that being successful as a manager is probably even more about opportunity than it is about ability. There are many fantastic managers out there managing clubs with a very short glass ceiling hamstrung by tiny fanbases and no money. People act like Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough could have made East Stirling and Hartlepool respectively European Champions. It's not possible - and trust me, in SAF's case, if it were plausible, he'd have stayed at East Stirling for life.

The majority of managers learn the vast majority of the management ability on their UEFA courses and the first few years of their career. Klopp isn't much better now than he was at Mainz. More successful, obviously. But that's about opportunity, not ability. And good managers often don't get the opportunities they deserve. Chris Wilder has done a phenomenal job, but will probably go down next season with Sheffield United. Yet people will very, very incorrectly assume that, say, Arsenal's manager is better because he finished higher in the table and has won an EL previously.

Please. If Poch wins the CL vs Liverpool, are people going to act like that he learned all the managerial acumen in the few weeks preceding the event. Yeah, that is when he learned to be a manager *rolls eyes*, never mind all the years beforehand (even then, 98% of what he knows he learned within the first two years of management in Argentina).

In short, no-one knows what you've got in Solskjaer. People like to pretend they know more than they do, but whatever. He struggled with Cardiff, but a proven experienced manager just just gone down with them. Give Pep or Klopp that job, they might just be able to keep them up, but I guarantee they gravely struggle - they've both had experiences that prove there's only so much you can do with and against clubs sith m massive financial/other disparities to yours. He needs help though, mostly because buying/identifing players at the very top end of the ability spectrum that fit in with the club and players already there (an underappreciated requirement - within scouting it's a big deal) is something he's never experienced and is tougher than it seems. A DoF would be incredibly helpful for him.

That guy made some good points and some OTT points but one thing he was spot on was about the part "mourinho cult". Not saying everyone but there are many who were loudest in defending Jose are the loudest in criticizing Ole. All the players were crap before and how Jose should have been backed to improve the team, but same excuse and benefit of doubt is not given to the manager who didn't even sign a single player or preseason to work on anything. Again not everyone but there are few obvious ones.

If we sack Solksjaer, then we will find someone better. We are going to be drifting around aimlessly next season if we stick with him...When there are some doubts swirling around the competence of the manager, then why should we entrust him with 150 odd million quid?It just doesn’t make any sense at all....

Please sack him now,and try to find an alternative over the next 30 days.IF Tottenham win the CL,Poch could just walk away....He’s already given enough indications that he might leave if they win....There’s a lot of talk that Allegri at Juventus wants a new challenge...,We will definitely find a better alternative...,
But it has to be THE man though. Not just a he’ll do option, that’s the kind of decisions at board level that got us into this mess. Also very few top coaches will join if they feel they are just a stop gap to someone else.

Allegri is defensive too so also not a good choice and also don’t think he’s all that either. The profile of manager is important. It really isn’t as easy as it sounds to get someone right for the job.

We still should have plenty from last summers coffers. Where has all that gone? I dont think giving the owners more excuses to cream off the transfer kitty is the way forward. If they saved back 200 mill last summer and do the same this one you think the glazers would give 600 mill to the next manager?
If they got the right one, I.e. Pochettino or if Ole shows some promise with his signings yes. I don’t think we gain anything by letting Ole spaff £250m on a load of shite, whilst retaining a load of crap too. One of the complaints about Ole at Cardiff was his recruitment was awful. He just signed a load of players who were nowhere near good enough.

I appreciate he has different budget constraints at OT, so it’s not a directly comparable job, but we don’t have limitless funds either. For me, he should be able to raise £150m from player sales, most of whom we won’t really miss either way. Let him spend that and see how he does. If it doesn’t go well, we have a thinner squad and still have cash left for reboot v4.0.

Dreading Ole leading Utd into next season.

Ole’s caretaker contract would now have ended and there’s not a chance in hell would Ed have given him the job based on how Utd finished the season.

This squad has got a losing mentality and Ole is not the man turn it around. Ed needs to sack him asap before things get any worse, if indeed they could get any worse.

If Ed or Glazers sack Ole now, then we're officially a Mickey Mouse club. Like Cardiff. Or QPR.

Not really getting the logic here. Elite clubs like Real make changes if it’s needed, whenever it’s needed. Of course Ole isn’t getting sacked now, but the club was foolish to appoint him so quickly and now we’ve got to stand by him at least for the first half of next season. hopefully it works out, there’s just very little for anyone to hold onto in terms of hope that Ole’s the man for the biggest rebuild for a top club in years.

That's my point. It would be a brain-fart if we sacked Ole now. I can't even believe fans talking about wanting Ole out before he's even brought in ONE player. We've cashed in on Fellaini. We've not resigned Valencia. We'll probably loose Mata. Herrera would most likely play more under OGS than he did under Mourinho, but that's water under the bridge. Ole probably came in too late to turn that desition anyway.

So one minute you’re saying Cardiff are Mickey Mouse, then you’re saying they’re well run?

Christ, make your mind up.
Oh. Sorry. Forgot the "/irony" at the end of my post. I should know better.

Cardiff is NOT well-run. Crystal Palace beat City away. That doesn't make CP a better team. Nor does it make Pep a shait manager.

BTW there’s no such word as ‘runned’ .....there’s a bit more irony for you.

Or Real Madrid - who did exactly that this very season.
And Real will probably not succeed next season either. They can't neglect the transfer marked 4-5 season in a row, and at the same time expect to compete with Barcelona.
They won the CL 3 times in a row, many thanks to a CR7, their fans didn't appreciate the last few seasons. I believe that if Spanish football was as competitive as PL, RM wouldn't make top 4 there the last two seasons.

Though suicidal is a bit extreme, I agree that he probably is in over is head. We could be in a worse position if we sack Ole today and Ed then goes “So who do we go for now??” And has no clue!! We could end up searching all summer for a new manager, calling up big name bosses who do not want to come here (which is the vast majority of them at this point) or bosses who just do not fit the style we want to play.

But the person we go for has to be a good fit, and there isn’t anyone available as of right now who is a good fit. We could sack Ole today and there is no one good enough to take the job tomorrow. When we sack Ole we have to have someone appropriate lined up. As in do not get coach in who is just going to get sacked because the style is crap or they are still not good enough.

If Real Madrid don't succeed next season it certainly won't be because they sacked the caretaker manager that they'd mistakenly made permanent.

My word! I'm shocked that so many people are actually suggesting this. He came in mid-season and hasn't even been given the chance to sign anyone yet. :houllier:

He needs to be given full reign to sign his own targets. I desperately dont want to see Ole become another fall guy, therefore he should walk before next season if he isnt enabled to do so and lay it all bare. It might be what we need to highlight the disease that Ed and the Glazers are at this club.

Keep hearing this but people never seem to mention who these are and since this thread is about contemplating about sacking Ole, who are the realistic replacements? (And Poch is not one of them)

This team is shit this season. It’s not on Ole.

They were bad under Mourinho and he wouldn’t defend them. So we sacked him.

Then we gave another guy the same group, got excited and then saw the same tumescent shit from the players we had in the first half of the season.

Mourinho wasn’t wrong, they are shit. Lukaku is useless half the time. There’s no excuse for Fred slipping 3 times this season when the GK passes to him.

Rashford has done nothing since March.

Removing De Geas feck ups alone would have got us in the top 4.

If we get the right players in which everyone can see we need then we might have a team someone could manage.

I also think the bigger issue is the dressing room and Sanchez’s salary. Which was the thing any idiot (but Woodward) could see and why city pulled out.

Pretty much every top manager out there. Are you suggesting Ole is a top manager? Based on what? 2 titles in a tin pot league 10 years ago?
