A little surprised - but like you I hope he can deliver, he needs to make an impact this season. I’d much rather he has minutes than Fred - hopefully the investment in the Academy pays off.

He's a squad player, nothing to be unhappy about.
He's got the ability to score some great goals and dictate the tempo of midfield when at his best, but his lack of acceleration and his niggly fouls let him down a bit.

We need the numbers in midfield, really. Plus it secures a potential fee/sell-on/buy-back clause too.

No risk losing him for free then, supposedly he only got 6 months left before this. Fail to perform and maybe we can sell him for min 10m?
I want him to put in a shift every game consistently (he don't) and becoming at least a useful squad player (no signs of that).

This is another Rojo contract where we'll spend the next 3 summers trying to shift a player because we were too concerned about 'preserving their value' to just let them go.
I feel he's a decent option and if we're lucky, he'll get better. Hopefully he scores a couple of screamers this season

I have no strong feelings about this. If he left I wouldn't care, as we're keeping him he's decent enough backup but I'd be shocked if he ever played consistently for the first team.

What's the strategy here? I originally thought we wouldn't extend Mata's contract and that Pereira would take his spot. Then I thought we'd release Pereira after Mata's extension, so I am confused...
I think his contract was ending next season, so it makes sense from the club. If he can impress over the next year or two and get in the side, maybe he'll come good and we'll all be loving it. The more likely scenario is he just doesn't ever reach the required quality and we sell him for £10m+ in a couple of seasons. The club seem reluctant to let players go on a free if they are in the mix around the first-team squad. Herrera being the notable exception, but that was likely due to a more lucrative deal with PSG.
No. He won’t be on a big wage (relative of course). This is the sort of contract renewal that does make sense, if he doesn’t make it this year, he’s the right age profile that we can sell him.

23 years old is considered a youngster now ? It's like another case of Lingard.

He was a part of our midfield that was hopeless vs mediocre midfielders last season. He dosn´t offer enough to be a PL midfielder nor on any other position. If we are going to rely on him then be prepared for a another poor season. This smells like the club is hoping things work out rather than watching him play carefully last season and make a objective judgement based upon that. I truly hope he is only going to be playing in EL or the small domestic cup for our seasons sake.
Some players take time to develop. If he becomes a first team player at 23/24/25 so what?

So at what age a player stops becoming a "youngster" and "young talent" ?
IIRC he did, during Caretaker Ole months -> it was so bad of a performance. Exposed defensively, no defensive sense and he couldn't dictate and control things.

That's the midfield set-up first half. Messy. I think it was a cup game.
Our front three in attack who has more exps doesn't help 'em. 2nd half with McT switch position with Pereira is better, more stable.
People saying how its good due value next summer when we sell him. Hmm where i heard that before, ah i know, same thing was said when Jones extended his contract.
Good stuff - I hope he plays with more confidence next season.
